senior correspondent rick leventhal shows us how hard the jersey shore was hit. >> not sure if you canhe water rushing down the street, but there are white caps coming off the ocean. the dunes that were there protecting the land from the sea have completely washed away. >> reporter: one year ago hurricane sandy roared into point pleasant beach, new jersey, smashing and swamping homes and businesses. leaving several feet of sand on ocean avenue. the white sands hotel repaired and reopened in time for summer, but many storm victims up and down the jersey shore are still struggling to recover. seaside heights is now demolishing and rebuilding part of its boardwalk for the second time. sandy leveled the fun town pier dropping the jet star roller coaster into the atlantic. it was later demolished. and piles were driven for a new $8 million boardwalk, part of which caught fire last month because of faulty wires damaged in the storm. 69 businesses that were rebuilt after sandy were destroyed. >> fortunately we're in much better shape this time. the first time around nobody had an idea what to

rick leventhal is live on the scene. . >> reporter: martha, we're right in the middle of west 57th. this is a major east/west crosstown thoroughfare and it's shut down between sixth and seventh avenues and you can see why that yellow box dangling about 20 stories above the street. we're told that's a concrete square, seven tons of concrete that may in fact be a counterweight to the crane that's holding it. there is the crane that malfunctioned earlier this morning at the top of the building. the apartments in this luxury condominium being built where the crane is, $90 million for a penthouse apartment in that building. the crane malfunctioned at some point this morning, they stopped the counterweight from it being lowered or raised up on that building, and now they've had work crews, firefighters, police officers and construction crews, evacuating a school on this block, asked people in buildings to stay away from their windows and keeping people off the sidewalks for obvious reasons if the square of concrete comes kraush

that is where our own rick leventhal is. ck, it is a big day on ellis island today then. >> reporter: absolutely, martha, especially since the last time we were here on july 4th, a lot of employers east told us they didn't think ellis island would reopen until 2015. they still have a long way to go. today on the 127th birthday of lady liberty just across the day, ellis island reopened its doors. the first and second floors will be open to the public including the immigration station, great hall, registry room. the exhibit, people of merge, 1550 to 1980, that covers year ellis processed 12 million people between 1892 and 1954. gift shop is open but sadly the calf fear yaw is not. there is no admission fee. you have to pay for the ferry about 14 bucks. martha: great place to bring your kids. full of fascinating history about new york city. how bad was it in that area, rick? >> reporter: this entire island was covered by water during hurricane sandy. all the mechanicals are below ground. because of that the storm surge destroyed

rick leventhal joins us live from ellis island with this part of the story. rick, people probably didn't realize how much damage was done >> reporter: right, jenna. sandy buried all of he will is island underwater and all the mechanicals were in the basement so all the mechanicals got crashed -- trashed. that included the entire electrical system for this historic island, heating and air-conditioning, water and sewage lines an telephone lines were damaged. the ferry house was destroyed and some of the exhibits. most of the one million valuable historical items and documents and photos did survive the storm. >> fortunately the floodwaterrers did not get on to the first, second, or third floors. the artifacts and our exhibits remained intact. however because we had no heat, no air-conditioning, because we had no climate control, we had to move the artifacts they're still down in maryland. >> reporter: the first and second floor of the immigration building are open to the public. that includes the great hall where immigrants were inspected and registry room upsta

rick leventhal is live in union beach, new jersey live with that. rick? >> reporter: good morning, jenna. sandy destroyed a bar that stood here on the bay for a decade. it was devastating for the owner, gigi oar. she found strength to unlikely pair, a rabbi and pastor who walked into her new temporary bar down the road. she owns off the bay, a bar in union, beach, new jersey. >> jacobob is off the bay because it is in the bay. >> reporter: superstorm sandy destroyed her waterfront restaurant. she can't afford to rebuild because her $1.2 million insurance policy from lloyds of london offered just 9 grand. >> you know, things happen for a reason, and i've said repeatedly maybe this was god hitting reset button. >> reporter: gigi opened a temporary spot, using doors from smashed homes as tables and walls. the bar became a command center for relief goods. >> trying to find volunteers to come to town. finding people to donate money. finding people to donate supplies. whatever the needs are in town we're trying to find it. >> reporter: enter first unlikely visi

rick live -- leventhal is down there. how are people doing?struggle, at you know, for men folks down here. the beach has been transformed dramatically. used to be a 12 to 15-foot dune. we were here a year ago and watched the ocean waves breaching the dune. we on the their-floor balcony and this is what it looked like back then. >> i'm not sure if you can see the water rushing down the street but there are white caps coming off the ocean. the dupes that were there protecting the land from the sea have completely washed away and there are literally waves of water rushing down washington avenue, across ocean avenue, now up to the front doors of many of the homes here. up to the bumpers of cars in the parking lot of this hotel. >> reporter: the next day i took a picture of the house on the ocean where the porch was blown out by the boeing and -- by wind and the waves. the house us boarded up. and we can show you some other photo wes took that day. one on washington avenue where you can see how much sand moved from the beach to the street, and into

our rick leventhal was reporting round-the-clock when the storm first hit. e is back there live from seaside heights where the boardwalk is still reeling from the effects of the storm there. so, rick, tell us what is it like there one year later? >> reporter: you know, martha, it depend where you're looking. you can see the construction going on that fun town pier where the jet star roller coaster fell into the ocean. the boardwalk to the north of us is in great shape. it was all rebuilt. right here where they had to chop through the boardwalk for a firebreak when the boardwalk went you up in flames. you see businesses that were torn down damaged by the fire. as we walk towards sew seaside park the neighboring jurisdiction, you can see the whole rest of this boardwalk, several blocks of it, had to be torn out. we want to take you back one year ago to show you the jet star roller coaster, a iconic image destroyed when it fell into the atlantic ocean, when the peer was knocked down by hurricane sandy's ferocious winds and storm surge. since february they were c
