lou: rick leventhal reported. dramatically escalating tonight after nato, requiring to fire on forces within the ukraine. this comes hours after a convoy, more than 200 trucks today entering eastern ukraine without permission of the ukrainian government. in a statement russia said it had run out of patience after a 10 day standoff and the ukraine responded, calling it a direct invasion, saying that authorized the actions of a few dozen trucks that were supposed to be a good by the red cross. both the white house and pentagon condemning the move today. >> russia should take the opportunity to remove this convoy from within the ukraine and if they don't they will face additional costs and consequences from our partners of international community. >> russia must move its vehicles and its personnel from the territory of the ukraine immediately. failure to do so will result in additional cost and isolation. >> the convoy comes ahead of scheduled talks beginning next tuesday between vladimir putin and his ukrainian coun

correspondent rick leventhal is live in gaza city. rick. >> reporter: greta, it's been 18 hours since this cease-fire began and so far the peace still holds. welcome relief for the resident os thf battered territory. many of them returning to their devastated neighborhoods for the first time today. residents of the neighborhood in east gaza are returning home for the first time since the early days of the conflict. this area's right on the border with israel and was the scene of some of the heaviest fighting between hamas militants and the israeli defense forces and you can see the result. buildings heavily damaged or completely destroyed, vehicles burned up, businesses blasted. the folks who lived here got out because of all the fighting and stayed out because there were still troops on the ground and still heavy clashes in the area, but now with the cease-fire in effect and the soldiers back in israel, some of these residents have come home to salvage what they can. two days ago we were in this very same intersection in east gaza and

rick leventhal is on the ground with the latest tonight. rick? >> a wear and welcome calm. it's been very quiet here, and that's given a window of opportunity for some of the residents of the hardest hit areas to get home and take a look at what's left of their shattered apartments and buildings there. we took a trip to east gaza. where the town was simply flattened, this was after extensive battles between the idf and hamas, there's a staggering degree of destruction in towns nearby. almost every house, apartment building and business was shelved, damaged or destroyed. power lines were down, vehicles were crossed or incinerated. we saw many residents carrying out what they could, furniture, blankets, clothing, but we also saw some big crowds in bustling marketplaces, a few minutes away, many stores and vendors were back in business today for the first time in days or weeks selling clothes and daily staples, including meat, bread and fruit. we went to one intersection that we went to two days ago, and at that time there had been an air strike. it was completely desserted. t

rick leventhal is live in gaza city. what did you see in the city? >> reporter: the damages here are extensive. one of the things we noticed is this constant sound of drones overhead. you might be able too hear it. the whine. you can probably hear that. they're circling all day and all night but the neighborhoods themselves completely devastated by these constant barrages from israeli military. at least 10,000 buildings have been estimated to be heavily damaged or destroyed in this 28-day war. we saw one of them in the el sidra neighborhood yesterday. it's been reduced to rubble now. we also arrived at another location moments after another rock hit a building there. a very regular occurrence here in gaza. multiple strikes also in rafa to the south yesterday and today. two houses destroyed in gaza city this morning that left several dead and a couple dozen injured. of course, hamas has been blamed by israel for creating all these civilian casualties because hamas is alsoly putting palestinians in harm's way using them as human shields, but gaza is ab

rick leventhal in the middle of it all in the gaza. >> it's been a relatively quiet night except for drones overhead but there have been 50 plus rockets fired from gaza into israel, and the iron dome system took three of them out. also attacks by israel into gaza this morning and this evening, and a bizarre attack in jerusalem that happened earlier today. a palestinian man with a lengthy criminal record stole an excavator and used it to knock over a bus. there were no passengers on board. the bus driver was hurt and a pedestrian was killed before police shot and killed the attacker. back near gaza we have seen for ourselves some of the devastating affects of this now 28-day-old war. >> at least 22,000 residents of gaza have been displaced and are now living in u.n. schools converted to refugee camps like this one. at least 2,000 people living here. women and children sleep in the classrooms and the men sleep outside. israeli army has encouraged many of those folks to go home but they say they don't think it's safe so they'll stay here as long as they can. the man who owned and lived

rick leventhal is streaming live from gaza city with the latest. >> the fbi tells us 63 rockets wereed from gaza toward israel but none in the past seven hours. israel responded with air-strikes on 82 separate targets. it all started early this morning, minutes after the cease-fire ended, with rockets launched a few hundred yards from us here. most of the rockets landed harmlessly in open areas but at least one hit a home and two israelis were injured this morning during the barrage which game despite israel's offer to extend the cease-fire beyond this morning and the result was predictable here in gaza. heavy air-strikes in the north near us. also in central gaza and further south with at least six dead according to palestinians, including three children and 30 others wounded. israel says hamas is responsible for the bloodshed because they fired first and israel says it won't negotiate peace while under fire. but the palestinian delegation is still in cairo and still wants its demands met, it says, to open air and seaports and lift the blockade. >> rick, thank you very much. >>> bre
