rick leventhal. i mentioned leland vitter. the equipment that they use is live google and they've been using it for a few years around here. sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't. leland is on the phone with us. how are things there, leland? >> reporter: shep i'm looking at about 50 or 60 riot police lined up here at the cvs that was urn was burned out and we have video of when police moved in to take an arrest. this was shot about 45 minutes ago. there was a lot of pepper spray and then police moved back to their line and a number of protesters lined up to put a buffer between the two groups. the police seem to think something is coming. there's reinforcements that are moving in here and as much as we talked yesterday at the police doing absolutely nothing to stop the looting we were seeing and the other lawlessness, there is decidedly a new tone to the police action here and you might say there's a new sheriff in town although the national guard is here certainly the sheriff is giving different orders in terms of

rick leventhal is live with what we could be seeing. rick? no he is not there yet.to bring you up to speed, all had been quiet. some s.w.a.t. teams, 500 national guards and we're told maybe an additional 100 guards could come in tonight. the governor has already indicated a desire to call up to 5,000 of them. we don't know if that's going to be necessary here. there's been a great deal of criticism early on that police thought that there was not a strong enough presence. there really is no way to control who honors or who doesn't honor a curfew here. we are going to be hearing as well from the police how they plan to deal with this. we should say that most business offices in and around the greater baltimore area shut down today. some were open for business but not many. the university of baltimore opened but not many going to classes. the fear is that it's going to ignite into something like we saw yesterday. way too early to tell. but in one of the oddities oriels will be playing tomorrow but with nobody in the stadium. no fans are allowed inside. they will play a

[shouting] >> >> joining us now from baltimore, rick leventhal as well as fox news correspondent leland vittert. all right, rick, let's begin with you. what's the situation where you are right now? >> well, it's somewhat tense, bill. nobody really knows what to expect when the sun goes down and curfew kicks. in we have a line of swat team officers here from baltimore city. and nerve supplemented by swat teams from surrounding counties. we know state police are here and the national guard as well. i want to point out there are also civilians lined up in front of those police police officers, members of the community who are trying to prevent trouble by getting between the people who are out here demonstrating and the police officers. so you have sort of two lines here creating a buffer, if you will. and there are people out here in the streets that are demonstrating but in many cases it's been sort of a party

fox senior correspondent rick leventhal is live in baltimore. rick? >> greta much calmer night tonight than last night. but a sense of uncertainty here. no one really knows what's going to happen when the sun goes down and curfew kicks in at 10:00. we are standing in front of a line in front of armored police officers with baltimore city police. you see the shields and the riot helmets. but you can also see this line of local residents here in front of them. they have formed their own line the community has to deal with the people before they have to deal with the police. so far they haven't had any issues they tell us, at this location. but it's definitely. it there is a lot going on here. you might be able to hear drums in the background. a large group of demonstrators that have walked through the streets hundreds of them. banging drums and calling for peace in the city. we also just had some people up on this roof top over here. and baltimore city police helicopter flew over and on the loud speaker ordered the people to get off the roof. perhaps an

fox news's rick leventhal is outside of camden yards with more. there is a crowd outside. inside though, rick. >> and it's a beautiful day for baseball melissa. there are couple dozen, three dozen fence outside the fence in orioles park in camden yards. there would be probably 30,000 people in the stadium. but there are absolutely empty seats. the game is going on. started in bottom of the first inning. there is no one there, except press and security and players and staff. they made this decision yesterday. the day after those awful riots on monday night to close the stadium to the public because of safety concerns. they said it was in the best interests of fan safety and deployment of city resources. this decision was made by major league baseball after talking to the orioles and local officials. they're playing this game today in an empty stadium. they're moving the weekend series with the rays supposed to be here at camden yards down to tampa bay. this is obviously a difficult time for the fans, for the city and for players too who i spoke with before the game. a couple

rick leventhal is in baltimore tonight. >> reporter: bret a calmer day and officials hope a calmer night thanks in part to the extra boots on the ground and the 10:00 curfew set to begin this evening. there are far too many scenes like this with buildings burned to the ground and a night of senseless violence. and just a couple of miles from our location a very large demonstration taking place tonight. a very different scene than last night with these huge crowds holding signs but marching peacefully hoping just like the mayor is to set a new tone and direction for the city. >> reporter: local residents pitch in cleaning up the mess left by rioters and opportunists who torched at least 144 vehicles and 15 buildings, looted stores and attacked police. firefighters and journalists with bricks, rocks cinder blocks and bottles. this is some of what we encountered in west baltimore monday night. and least 20 officers were injured and more than 200 people arrested. the violence erupted soon after the funeral for freddie gray who died april 19th one week after having his spine partially severed

let's get the latest from rick leaf van leventhal at camden yards. >> reporter: the game with the whiteox and the orioles closed because of safety concerns. the first time they played without fans in the league's 140-year history. baltimore police say the first time of the curfew was a success with minimum ensincidents. a far cry from monday. freddie gray died a week later after suffering traumatic injuries. >> i want to make it clear, once again, that these senseless acts of violence are not only a grave danger to the community and they must stop but they are also counterproductive to the ultimate goal here. >> reporter: meanwhile, criticism is mounting over the city's lack of action in the early hours of the unrest. a senior law enforcement source involved in handling the baltimore riots told fox news there was a direct order given by stephanie rawlings-blake to stand by and retreat on monday night, tieing the hands of officers while they were pelted with rocks, bricks and bottles. a high government force says the mayor had to be forced to change her position to finally ask for a decl
