rick leventhal has been following the story for us. we were listening to them. maybe you could take us back and explain how we got here and all that has unfolded about 24 hours ago. >> what we are hearing is that there is in fact clear evidence of a targeted anti-semitic attack that took place on this kosher grocery store behind me which has just been boarded up by workers after a bearcat smashed through the front to take out the shooters inside. according to authorities, the started afternoon. a cemetery a mile away from here. a police officer was investigating a prior incident, approached a u-haul van, a rented u-haul van and the suspects inside identified as david anderson, 47, and a female, francine graham, 50. open fire. apparently anderson shot that officer, killed him. the officer, detective joe seals, 15 year veteran of the jersey city lease department, killed at the cemetery. those suspects drove directly here in that rental van, right up front here in front of the store. they got out and made their way towards the store. we have seen the surveillance f

senior correspondent rick leventhal has the latest tonight from jersey city. >> this remains a very fluid and fast-moving investigation. >> the jersey governor phil murphy briefed reporters on a shooting that ended in a kosher deli tuesday leaving six dead including the police officer and the two suspects. >> we saw the very worst of humanity. but the response as law enforcement work to address the threat and as the community came together to create and care for survivors, we also saw the very best. >> authorities confirmed the shooting started in a nearby cemetery where 15 year veteran detective joe seals approached a suspicious rent a u-haul van and the driver got out and open fire. a father of five was killed. the suspects, identified as 45-year-old david anderson and 35-year-old francine graham drove to a jewish store walking straight inside the store, opening fire, killing three civilians. officers walking the streets heard the shots and responded along with swarms of local, state, and federal agencies with residents taking cover and schools next door and across the street on lockdow

senior correspondent rick leventhal joins us tonight. >> the jersey city mayor says it was a hate crimeeting the attack on the jewish community and said he could have been far worse. we want to take another look at the surveillance video which shows the two suspects rolling up to the curb and a white rented van getting out with those two long guns and ignoring other people on the street, walking straight into the jewish grocery where they shot and killed three people. the suspects had multiple weapons, according to authorities, lots of ammo and a pipe bomb which they had no chance to use after the police pinned them down in the store. they were killed by cops who rammed into the story. the suspects, 47-year-old david anderson and 50-year-old francine graham. they were spotted in a cemetery before the shooting by an undercover police detective named joe seals who recognized the vehicle he ran as being possibly connected to another homicide committed last weekend. he approached the vehicle and that's when authorities say anderson got out and shot and killed the veteran detective and fathe
