joining me now, former texas governor rick perry. thanks for joining us.riginally started getting criticism from his fellow candidates after he seemed to suggest that a majority of the illegal mexican immigrants crossing the border were being sent by mexico and were criminal, were rapists and drug dealers. you're the longest serving governor, i believe in texas history. is that accurate? is that an accurate description of the illegal immigrants from mexico? >> well, it's not, that was one of the reasons again that we pushed back on his statements and that type of casting disburse, that kind of painting with a broad brush. when the facts don't back that up. we need a president of the united states that's going to bring this country together. after six and a half years of a president who has divided this country along a lot of different lines, we don't need a republican divider in chief. that is where a lot of us are coming down. after six and a half years of really difficult time for this country economically, foreign policiwise, not taking care of our bord

i think that what separates rick perry in 2016, for example, from 2012.time there are more candidates in this ever crowded republican field who are more moderate on the issue of immigration and learning the lesson from mitt romney's resounding loss among latino voters. you have jeb bush and marco rubio, two candidates on record have supported immigration reform. marc rubio remains open to pathway to citizenship. so i don't think he will have the pushback from mitt romney who went on to learn the hard way that he should have taken the rick perry approach back then. when you have donald trump distracting from the message and continue roads republicans are trying to make with la scene over voters, i think they want to condemn him. whoever the nominee is on the republican side, he or she will be judged that way. >> i should say that bush has essentially sworn off the path to citizenship. he said it is not happening. there is a debate breaking out about whether we're seeing in the polling is similar to the herman cain phenomenon or the michele bachmann phenome

ever happened to rick perry's presidential ambitions. rick perry got to hold his big anti-trump speech today. not in south carolina but washington, d.c. what matters for him is the national press. the national press tends to hang out in washington, d.c. in order to compete this year, you need national attention. the only subject republicans can get national attention is if they are responding to donald trump. that's lindsey graham and rick perry. that's their path right now. at this point in the race, this far out in the race. national poll numbers ought to be absolutely meaningless. this year it turns out they're all that matters. because of fox news. and the only way to get a bump in national poll numbers seems to be fighting with and getting yourself in the orbit of donald trump. and other candidates are trying to get attention many other ways. john kasich said we should start a new ground war in the middle east. right now. we should put american boots on the ground to fight isis. let's just do it, em. jeb bush went to a fake abortion

rick perry is nowhere in the polls right now.needs to run a relatively safe campaign with some breakout moments to kind of show he's the elder statesman that he had hoped to be last time around. and wasn't. and i think this was a good way to do it. this is a way for him this week to step up and say, as far as republicans go, i'm the profile in courage here. i'll take on donald trump and say what he's doing is wrong. and that speech that we probably would have ignored otherwise has gotten play all over cable news for a week. >> i don't know if it says a lot of good things about republicans that a profile in courage is taking on something donald trump said about mexicans and other people from south america that's generally seen as incorrect. and i think that will be the challenge when you're on a debate stage with donald trump. if he says something similar to that. if he repeats that line, what does a marco rubio say? what does a jeb bush say? again it takes them off of their pro-active message. >> i don't question perry's sincerit
