rick reichmuth has been following sandy's path. so i get, rick, that's good news. others say it can be worse than irene. >> don't pay attention to it being downgraded. it doesn't mean anything. it's not really completely a tropical storm. it's going to be transitioning to what we kind of consider a nor'easter. we are accustomed to nor'easters. that kind of a event. moisture associated with a tropical storm. tropical storm holds a lot more water in the atmosphere as it transitions. that water is still going to be there radar picture showing the rain is following across parts of the carolinas. the rain is going to be heavy all day. battering waves, a lot of wind. beach erosion and that sort of thing here. go forward on the track of this storm. continues to move northeast. takes this unprecedented left-hand hook. that's where we've begin to go through a transition to a different type of a storm. people are used to hurricanes strengthening when there is warm water. this isn't going to be strengthening for those purpose purposes. snran way a nor'easter strengthens. euro

meteorologist rick reichmuth in the fox extreme weather center. rick? >> i walked by that crane this morning on my way to work and i saw it. i thought how is that crane still up there when you've got winds at that height gusting to 90 to 100 miles per hour. those winds gustin gusting in to 80 mile an hour range. it's such a big concern. we often so much hear about where is the store going to come on shore. as meteorologists we say don't worry about where it comes on shore because that's not necessarily where the worst is going to be. let me back off here. i'll show you the maximum wind gusts from parts of connecticut to 85 miles an hour down toward tuckerton, new jersey, and the maximum is 94 miles an hour in eaton's neck. there's a ton of water funneled. winds gusting around 80 miles an hour in new york city. it's gone down just a little bit. we're down to 75 miles an hour, over hurricane force in newark. what we're dealing with here is a storm that is circulating here across south jersey, but we've got the winds now coming out of the southeast here fu

let's bring in rick reichmuth live in the extreme weather. everybody along the seaboard should be concerned. >> a lot of concern in new york city, long island, new jersey just from the storm surge, which is going to be significant. the storm is strengthening as a hurricane. it has warm water to go over and will strengthen as a hurricane but the other is the clash of cold air, that forms the hybrid nor'easter storm that will cause incredible storm surge like we've never seen. say it comes on shore in central jersey. it puts new york city, long island, connecticut and cape cod and the islands on the bad side. the worst will be around long island. storm surge comes down the long island sound, say six to ten feet of that. it's bigger here and funnels into a smaller air. we have storm surge coming into new york harbor. the only way the two connect is through the east river. when it comes up on the south side is doesn't have any place to go so we'll have significant flooding in manhattan and the burrows. the other is the massive wind field, 50 to 6

first, rick reichmuth live in the fox extreme weather center. no joke today. elizabeth is in kill devil hills, north carolina, already being battered. first to rick with the latest on hurricane sandy's path. >> the storm is strengthening, which is hard to believe. we have cloud cover from canada to ohio. still down to south carolina and the center of the storm is way out here in the atlantic still yet and the pressure continues to drop. that indicates a strengthening storm and that's what we expect to see. the rain will continue to fall across the airline in a coastline but spreading north so we have rain in philadelphia. and it will be towards new york city. we're 36 hours from the main event. i want to show you -- i put the two most reliable computer models on top of each other. where you see the rings, those are rings of consistent pressure and means windy conditions. through time, it starts to split a little bit. by dinnertime tonight but the track is the same, just the timing is different. 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, one of the models shows a center of landfall he

meteorologist rick reichmuth tracking it from the fox extreme weather center. orning. >>. >> rick: yeah, we're predicting a storm like most of us have never seen. it's a hurricane moving off to the northeast, but this is different, it's going to be mixing with a storm coming off of the main land and it's going to explode into an incredibly strong storm bus of that we expect to see major coastal flooding and going to bring a lot of damage to the beaches of new jersey, long island, potentially across areas of massachusetts and maine and also long duration rain event so a lot of people getting four to eight inches of rain and it's going to cause incredible inland flooding and some areas, isolated might see over ten inches of rain as well, but we're going to be dealing with winds, for over 48 hours and that means so many of the trees still have leaves on them are going to be falling over and seeing a lot of power outages, potentially power will be out for weeks, to many of the people because i think we'll see so much in the way of power outages, one thing, to watch,

and meteorologist rick reichmuth is in the extreme weather center. >> good morning, the snow you're talking about will be across the central appalachians, west virginia, pennsylvania and ohio, everybody else we're talking about a rain event. the rain already in across the carolinas, and it will get worse through the afternoon. winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour at times, but the track is it interesting, generally this time of year, these storms move out to sea. not the case this time. we expect it to take a hard left turn sometime sunday and make a direct beline for parts of the coast line of new jersey up to long island. somewhere in that area appears to be the target. this is what we can break this down and show you how we're going to expect it. today, heaviest rain is along the coastal carolina area getting worse through the afternoon and winds gusting up to about 50 miles per hour at times and tomorrow, the wind will intensify, but it will also spread north by tomorrow afternoon, we'll see tropical storm force winds, potentially up around new york city and coastal areas of connecticu

get update on hurricane sandy from meteorologist rick reichmuth in new york. good evening.s looks ugly. >> it does. it will be far more trick than treat for this one certainly. especially mid-atlantic. right now it doesn't look all that impressive. don't let it fool you. it's still a hurricane here. about 75-mile-per-hour strong winds. however, it is not expected to be all that strong just yet. it's going to strengthen in the next three days or so and then change its form. right now, we got rain across florida. that will just continue to move toward the north. rain across coastal areas of the carolina starting tonight in to tomorrow morning. by tomorrow morning it will be heavy at times. take a look at what happens with the storm. it moves to the northeast. where you would think a storm would move as you get farther north in latitude. then it does an unprecedented thing that moves toward the west. it combined with a storm that is pulling off of the top of land an going to strengthen rapidly. we are going to talk about a storm that will be much stronger than you think of as

so, sturgeon is the big word of the day and rick reichmuth our chief meteorologist has been watching for it all day long. rick, you have predicted this thing almost to a tee. it's nuts. >> the worst storm obviously that we have ever seen. things that start getting leading on this. look at satellite picture no rain possibly going on right here so you might think there is no winds going on there. that's not the case. the winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere on the northern side here are gusting at about 120 miles per hour. some of those winds get funneled down to the surface and that's what we are seeing. the winds now out across parts of long island are the worst we have seen so far even though the center of the storm moving on shore down here across parts of south jersey. the wind all day long has been kind of out of the north here heading towards the center of that storm. and we still have all this water pushing up here. those winds are beginning to change and as you have been saying very well, shepard, now a little bit out of the south and eventually coming in kind of towards

rick reichmuth is in our fox news extreme weather center tonight tracking the storm's path. rick? >> we're saying the storm has been downgraded t from a hurrice to a post tropical storm. it's been a messaging nightmare. if you hear downgraded, don't believe it. we've got a monster nor'easter on our hands, incredible impacts happening now. the winds are extreme out of the east here across areas of long island sound. it's been pushing water all day long here in towards new york city, and that's why we now have significant flooding. i believe we have live pictures or pictures out of new york right now into lower manhattan, and water is going into the battery tunnel right now that connects lower manhattan into brooklyn, and it has now been inundated with water. getting all kinds of reports of water in the east village, in the west village, and it's slowly moving up further in towards the area. i want to show you this wind picture because we're about to see the worst of our situation. right now we have high tide, right there is the battery. that's the very lower end tip of manhattan ri

meteorologist rick reichmuth is tracking sandy in the extreme weather center. rick? >> greta, look at the size of the storm still, about 1500 miles across. if you go up across parts of maine and get across kentucky and across parts of georgia and south carolina, it's about 1500 miles. this is the big population zone along i-95 back towards chicago, the precipitation is less significant than last night. lighter rain, not like the heavy rain we saw yesterday. the snow is lighter as well. a couple of things you notice on the radar, still a couple problems. in right here across parts of new england now, there's been some very heavy rain and a bit of flooding and the threat for severe weather, even tornadoes across parts of new england during the evening hours tonight, but the snow continues to fall as well, and we might see about another six inches or so on top of the two to three feet we've seen, so incredible snowfall. winds dying down just a little bit, still gusting to 29 in new york, but where you don't see any color on the map, that means the winds have died down a

the latest track on where the storm is headed, we go to rick reichmuth. >> reporter: 5-days.robably thursday is when we'll stop talking about the storm as much. this is the precursor dealing with the rain across parts of florida and the carolinas. that's 3-5 inches of rain for some folks and winds up to 50 miles an hour. but the rain has been falling for 36 hours in florida. the storm is not moving very quickly unfortunately. we are confident it will take this left-hand turn. that that's what we have never seen happen with these storms in the month of october. it will combine and create a storm strengthening when it makes landfall. the track anywhere from the narragansett bay to the mid-atlantic. westerly track a monday morning landfall. so big differences there. any time you are on the right side of where that center is that's the worst news. but everything right here from d.c. up towards boston in the bull's-eye. that's the most populated area in the country. we'll take a direct hit from one of the strong jest storms we have ever seen. megyn: pilots are in the air and insid

our live team coverage starts with chief meteorologistist rick reichmuth in our fox extreme weather centernd anna live on long island. we start with rick. >> very incredible storm and fromminging storm. it will be under the influence of two different features. one is hurricane sandy. still the warm water below and still potentially strengthening from that. off towards the west a front moving in and this hurricane is stuck between high pressure off to the east and this front. that colder air is sunday this warmer air is going to rapidly strengthen the storm as we move forward over the next 2436 hours. it will also change it from a hurricane to a different type of a storm leak a nor'easter. just because we are not talking about hurricane eventual hly do not let it get your guard down and think it will not be a big storm. it will likely be the most significant storm we have dealt with here across parts of the mid atlantic and new york city and parts of connecticut and cape cod and the islands. these are a little bit confusing. where you see the rings those are areas that equal pressure. tight

she in for rick reichmuth this morning. >> good morning, everyone.mperatures where they should be from the northeast down into florida. currently 62 in tampa and 60 trees in no. it's actually cooler across the carolinas and georgia right now than it is in new york city. we are seeing some of that cooler air making it down into portions of the southeast. it's going to be a hot day out across texas. 90 over in san san antonio. so temperatures out across the center of the country will actually be well above average. more than 15 degrees above average for some of you. enjoy it why you do have that warm air out across the center of the nation. you will be noticing a change as we head into the next several days. a dip in the jet jet stream as e head into wednesday of next week and even by next weekend we are talking about temperatures well below average. starting to feel a little bit more like winter actually across some these parts of the country. otherwise, as far as rain goes, pretty quiet out across most of the south, east, and also the southern plains
