let's go to rick reichmuth.hat stands out to me about this storm is really what we're worried about is the river. the reason we are worried about the river is the snow that happened 4, 56 months ago. rick: crazy, isn't it? it really have crazy. record breaking snow across the far northern plains. all of that snow melted and we have been talking about flooding for four monthsed to saying way up towards the north. we still have rivers in flood stage up across north dakota and nebraska. still a lot of water in the mississippi river shed that comes out and exits plaquemines parish across southeast louisiana. take a look at this. these are the things i'm noticing. these are the winds gusting at places where we have stations. one of them is buoy at eugene island. this has been seeing winds over hurricane force for the last 30 minutes or. so 91 mile-per-hour wind gust, 82 mile-per-hour currently. way out into this band that's probably about 150 miles per hour away winds gussing in the 60 mile-per-hour range. this band

meteorologist rick reichmuth with more.nd mike tobin in chicago where folks are hitting the beats just to try to get through it. we begin with jacqui in manhattan where the temperature is already approaching 100 degrees. jacqui? >> good afternoon to you, neil. i told you it didn't feel swelter. now it does. 290 million people will see temperatures over 90 degrees the next week. you have two dozen states that are under heat advisory. here on the eastern seaboard, looks like temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees above average. we've been talking to folks. a lot of people stopping at this ice cream truck to try to do it. i was talking to hassan earlier. are you there? i know you're busy. a lot of business today? >> yes. very good today. too many people today. it's a weekend. >> are you going to be here on the weekend, too? >> yes, every day. seven days here. every day. >> so this is good for business. >> yeah. but i'm not the owner. i just work. >> fair enough. these folks have been waiting for the ice cream. it's so interesting.

rick reichmuth has the tee tastles the storm's path. orm gets to a hurricane maybe it doesn't. none of that matters. the thing that matters is what is happening here. this is the mississippi watershed. any drop of rain that falls anywhere in here eventually if it isn't absorbed or evacuateside going to exit down the mississippi river. we had so much record snow pack this last winter. record rain and so many have seen all of that flooding. all of that water is exiting and gone into the mississippi river. and that mississippi river has been at flood stage for about six months. really long time and all that water now trying to exit. the problem is now we are going to push a lot more water back into that same area and add a lot of rainfall and that's why we are so concerned. our models we look at are getting into more agreement in terms of spacing of this. seernl area of louisiana where we will be seeing some spots likely 10 to 20 inches of rain. baton rouge towards new orleans that's likely going to be the bulls eye of this. i also want to

joining me now is chief meteorologist rick reichmuth to lay it all out. red and orange behind you. >> rick: there is actually what i just did here was put up tuesday's temperatures just so we have something to look forward to. it is going to get better tuesday and wednesday of next week. we will get a really big break across the eastern seaboard and central plains. i just say that because so many people are tired already. the heat especially right in the central plains where they have been baking all week long. that's the heat that's moving towards the east. you see this little break here across parts of the appalachians, that's only because the elevation that you are not as hot. but the humidity is certainly in place. this is what it feels like right now. you see all that pink. that is where we have got temps that feel like 90 to 100 plus. that's going to be worse throughout the after. right there across kind of that central plains areas of iowa, minnesota, risk, illinois, you see that pink, we are going to be dealing with spots in excess of 110. it's no

we check in with rick reichmuth, it's not over yet. rick: yeah.rricane season. things really pick up by the time you get into august and september, september the peak of it. but the river is at flood stage, it's been at flood stage for pushing 200 days because of all the moisture over the winter and the spring. now we have this storm here. i will tell you, if we have a storm again, a stronger storm into august or september, we could be talking about this same situation. at least a storm kind of in that same area. you see all that consecutive activity, that's thunderstorm activity, moisture that's still going to get pulled in up across areas of that central, southern area of the gulf and pulling towards the north. three distinct areas of rain right now. one in towards mississippi, this is causing localized flooding, also some tornado warnings with it this morning. especially along interstate 59 corridor, so watch if you're driving there. then we have another big line of storms moving to east of lafayette now. you're about to get a break. and then w

rick reichmuth is breaking the news on the hurricane watch from the fox weather center. >> hurricanengs across coastal areas of louisiana. it includes places like morgan city and louisiana. that means we'll see hurricane conditions starting tomorrow into the next day. the reason why this is such a story isn't because of barry itself, but because of the flooding we saw since the snow pack last winter and all the heavy rain this spring. we have been talking about flooding for months. all that water along the central plains goes into the mississippi river. it has been over flood level for over 185 days in a row, since january. this is the longest we have seen the river continuously in flood stage. keep in mind or think about when katrina made landfall, the river was at 3 feet. where we have a tropical storm, maybe a minor hurricane, it could have devastating impacts from the water in place. liz: rick leventhal is on the ground. it's an increasingly dangerous situation. rick? reporter: just to reit 8 much of what rick was saying. the governor louisiana says this is the first time louisia

first, rick reichmuth is live. rick? >> the biggest concern, the french corridor is below sea level. if the water is at least at the height of the levy, there's no place for it to go. that's a concern. this is a storm that doesn't have its act together. that's good news. don't have a lot of time for that to happen. there's the center of the storm. you can see this action away from it. that means a lot of people will get a lot of rain. it's a good thing. doesn't have its act together. the water here is incredibly warm. we're breaking records for temperatures here across the gulf. these are temperatures that you'd see at the peak of hurricane season, not still just into early july. we have temperatures around 90 degrees. because of those water temperatures, they're giving it a chance to get to a category one hurricane. again, don't pay attention to the center point. all that moisture is all around the storm. we're going to see some storm surge. storm surge won't be that strong. if you have 3 to 6 feet of storm surge and mo

fox meteorologist rick reichmuth joins us with the latest. rick?t is likely to come in new orleans and along the mississippi river. beginning of the year, we need to refresh everyone, don't follow center, storms are one big point. that is where the center of the storm is. look at that big batch of thunderstorms way off to the west of it. most of it towards the southeast. not much activity in the center. that will make the storm, it will take a while to get itself organized f it does likely could strengthen quickly up to category 1 storm because these waters here are incredibly warm. record breaking temperatures for the water temperature here. that gives fuel it needs. we have tropical storm warnings in effect, hurricane watches in effect across coastal areas of louisiana. yesterday we saw one batch of storms move through the new orleans area that dropped eight inches of rain that caused incredible flooding. our big concerns with flooding, category 1 storm will that be such a big deal? because, connell, all the moisture this year, all of the rain wa

and rick reichmuth is in the weather center watching hurricane barry coming to shore and we keep saying the worst is yet to come. >> it's an interesting thing, even in the meteorology community have a hard time with messaging. everything is about messaging to the public to create safety for people. so people are used to hurricanes, they think that hurricane creates a certain level of worriness or such. this is a storm that hurricane-- if it gets to a hurricane or a tropical storm, it doesn't matter. it's about the water that's already in place because of a really snowy winter, a thousand miles to the north and wet spring, also to the north. that's the reason why this story matters and where that 20 inch-ish rain band lines up matters. if it happens right over new orleans, it's much different than if it happens 30, 40 miles west of new orleans. that's why we've had so much concern. i will tell you so far it looks like things are looking good for new orleans, to the west of it. the center of the storm, there's a bit of a center to the south cutting off marshall islands. two hours away we'

let's go to our chief meteorologist rick reichmuth and the fox news extreme weather center for more. good evening, rick. >> good evening. hurricane season, here we go again. we are getting started early. a big storm, hurricane warnings everywhere you see this read, all the louisiana coastline, south coast line. i will tell you, the hurricane potentially getting toward hurricane, officially we are saying that it will get to around 70, 75 miles an hour sustained winds, 75 is where it becomes hurricane. is not really matter. that kind of a storm want to cause a lot of damage because of that hurricane but it will bring them out of moisture. one of the reasons that will bring so much moisture is because it is moving over really, really warm water, water temperatures are at historic records for this time of year. the big problem we have is we have had so much rain this year. so to put this on to contacts from from a big snowpack over the winter, then a rainy spring, we saw record-breaking breaking flooding all along the mississippi water watershed. you see right here, we've got flood warnin

chief meteorologist rick reichmuth is here with the forecast. >> always such a tough thing with messaging, downgrading mangedowngradingmakes you think. that's what happens as the storm goes over land. it was a minimum hurricane strength when it did so, any weakening will get it back to tropical storm force. that's what we've got going on. we heard the hurricane director saying a lot of the moisture is offshore, beginning to come onshore. we had the storm surge in. that pushes water in and we have rainfall on top of it and it continues to push it in based off of this wind direction right now and that water can't drain and the water levels were already very, very high. that's why this storm, while it may be a category 1 storm, it will cause a lot more damage than you would generally see from a storm like this. did come on-shore, moved over marsh island. there's not anybody living in marsh island but there is in intercoastal city. this is a look at where the storm is now. the center is back over here, across south central louisiana. take a look at these rain bands, way across parts of the mi

leland: here is rick reichmuth in the extreme weather center tracking it all. now extreme heat. >> florida feels pretty good sorry to say comparatively especially across the central plains. heat indices in iowa up to 119 degrees, 115 in minneapolis yesterday. right here in the cornbelt the corn actually releases moisture and makes it more humid in the atmosphere and it worse. you see the heat advisories in effect. see that break here, that's the appalachian mountains and we don't have the advisories because just the elevation is helping things out a little bit. everybody else dealing with it today. you'll notice a little bit of a break toward the north. we have the showers down across the southwest and the temps are down at least temporarily. these big storms are moving across the northern plains are dropping the temperatures a lot and eventually it's going to bring big relief for us. 67 degrees, almost 50 degrees cooler than what it felt like yesterday. this is today hot across nebraska and iowa. that cold front moving through nebraska, headed to omaha. by tom

rick reichmuth has been all over these kind of stories for a long, long time, because as we continue this video, people are just cleaning up. it's obviously still the middle of the night in california. and rick, obviously we're saying no deaths, no serious injuries reported but they are digging out and trying to assess what happened. >> one of the things, it's not in a big, populated area. if there's a bright side to it, across central california, nowhere near the population we have along the coast which is what we had with some of the other big quakes in california. when you have a big quake like the 4th of july, anything after that is considered an aftershock. it's not always the case. one in 10 times you get a stronger quake afterwards that is interested b considered to be principal quake. there's a 10% chance we could see a quake stronger than this, stronger than the 7.1, and that would be the main quake. that's likely not the case. we would see aftershocks that we're seeing right now, they'll continue to diminish in intensity and frequency over time. but this will likely go on p
