raymond: coverage on the latest with rick reichmuth standing by.g. >> reporter: good morning. we are at an emergency staging site in lee county where the county is 75% without power. the national guard is going to transport this larger location to a distribution site for food and water and to put in perspective we are in the mainland area of fort myers where destruction is widespread. we did a survey yesterday where we put out boats into homes, homes taken off their pilings, cars obliterated, gone, getting to this location is difficult but this mainland does pale in comparison to what we see on fort myers beach, you see from overhead the destruction, almost all of that wiped out by ian's wrath and we are told the initial more sporadic search for survivors in the rubble, they become more methodical and will continue today. further in the gulf, sanibel island still remains inaccessible so the causeway leading there was wiped away, we watched military helicopters, rescue helicopters fly in and out of that area, the mayor of the beloved community made

rick reichmuth. we're getting words that thousands of homes have been irretrievably destroyed, particularly fort myers, this is a before and after of a beach cottage, before, beautiful idyllic, afterwards, gone, essentially. these folks own it in jacksonville right now. and they're hurricane ian survivors, their collage not so much. guys, how are you doing? >> we're doing good, neil, thanks for having us. >> maybe not under this circumstances. maybe you can tell me what happened to the cottage, essentially i guess it's gone now? >> it is. we evacuated on tuesday morning when the mandatory evacuation came through, and had been staying on the east coast for the last few days. on wednesday morning, about 11:45, we were watching our rain camera at home before the power went out, and saw our belongings start to wash away out of our ground level and then shortly thereafter our power went out and we were no longer able to watch the feed and grateful that we weren't. >> just amazing. now, so i would emergenc

rachel: team coverage with meteorologist rick reichmuth standing by. thank god we have him today but we have alexandria hoff on the ground in fort meyers. good morning. >> good morning, there's a line of ambulances that are ready to be deployed as the day goes on and it's a somber reminder on the highways and yesterday you'd be driving down and coming from fort meyers beach and fort meyers beach almost completely washed away and recovery efforts are more methodical and will continue throughout the day. the hope is more people not in contact with family will be found alive and officials fear the death toll is likely to grow. a bit further in the gulf, sanibel island completely inaccessible by road and governor desantis said yesterday the pilings holding up the causeway, that single route in and out remained in tact but what was built on the sand bar washed aid way. military helicopters were flying in and out of the area and boats and the mayor of the community noted a grim comparison. >> i can tell you one of our public works people, that's one of the f

let's now check in with chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for the fox weather forecast. hey, rick. >> pretty crazy. some of the storm surge in south carolina and north carolina were third and fourth highest ever and pretty amazing and even the impacts from the category 1 storm coming on shore yesterday and the weather map in florida. this is your recovery forecast and temps throughout the day today into the low to mid 80s and we warm up a little tomorrow into the mid maybe a few upper 80s but overall tons of sunshine and no precipitation in the forecast. it's been rainy season, the rainy season is pretty much over and this storm kind of ushers out all of the moisture and we're not going to be seeing a return to any significant rain, which is great news. i want to take you through the recovery forecast and parts of the carolinas as well. temperatures into the 70s and couple degrees cooler tomorrow and getting in towards monday and temps for a high to the mid 60s and same for the mid to upper 60s by tuesday. much cooler forecast for parts of the carolinas and overnight low

i believe rick reichmuth is with us. rick. rick: yeah.t 2-3 more weeks where you can see activity. obviously, the hurricane season goes towards the end of november, but really the meat is still for a couple weeks left. that said, take a look here in the atlantic basin, this is tropical storm julia that's heading to the west moving pretty quickly. and now that it's here across parts of the swerp caribbean, environmental conditions are really set for its to strengthen. this is headed right towards nicaragua, and we do expect to see this strengthen at least into a category one, maybe a category two hurricane before making landfall somewhere here in nicaragua. one of the things we're watching eventually, sometimes you can see a storm make landfall here and eventually commit up in across parts of the gulf of mexico and restrengthening. that could impact the u.s. we don't expect that. storm is staying par enough to the south that it could exit back out here and not have any impacts mt. u.s., which is really good news. that said, central america

let's turn to rick reichmuth. rick: rachel, i'm getting chilly out here. air mass settle in this week. right now temps not that bad, 40 degrees in chicago, 36 up in fargo. but we are going to start to watch reinforcing batches of cold air begin to surge down across participants of the south even as far south as the north part of florida. temps are going to be much, much cooler than they have been, 15-20 degrees below average. by the time we get towards wednesday morning, jackson, or mississippi, 34 degrees. 34 in atlanta, add a little bit of elevation, and you're going to be seeing some spots well below pleasing. cold air on -- freezing. cold air on its way, it is fall on its way. rachel? let's turn now to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for fox weather forecast. , i was out here and said it's cold and i was corrected by someone in the audience saying it's cool. you're right, it's cool on the eastern coast and taking a look at the map and 45 is cool, could be much colder than that but first time it's been this cold certainly feeling a bit chilly and one big storm down across the south bringing a lot of rain across parts of texas and into louisiana and now parts of arkansas and throughout the day today this will slowly pull off towards the east along with it some severe weather, probably some pretty strong winds. i don't think too much of a tornado threat today, but we're going to see the severe weather. we have a lot of drought going on across the country, about 63% of the country and everywhere you see there that's a mississippi river water shed, that's drought we have going on and we'll get decent rain at least to help the res river over the next -- mississippi river over the next couple days. back to you guys inside. will: thanks, rick. demo

rick reichmuth right now on what ian is doing now.ick: yeah, a cat one and a cat four, obviously, both can cause a lot of damage but cat fowrk obviously, we've seen the imagings out of fort myers to the south. the rain, you see two little bull's eyes really in that i-4 corridor. up around daytona beach, about 2 feet of rain. same goes here just to the north of where the storm came on shore, there is some concern of potentially we're getting reports that are not confirmed, some reports saying there is potential wily some danger with one of the levees and some saying there's not. what we do know is that the myakka river there has crested at its all-time highest level, and it is expected to stay at at least above record level for about the next two days. florida's so flat, it takes a long time for water to re are recede out of there. want to show you the forecast other the next fife days, we're looking really good. plenty of sunshine to begin to dry things out. humidity levels a little bit lower and no chance of any precipitation. you'll

will: rick reichmuth is following this as well. reduction, show us the general area. ck: let's go back to katrina. that it was a mississippi if story. the storm surge e engulfed the coast of mississippi, over 30 foot of storm surge and destroyed everything. and after that the levees broke that were protecting new orleans, and new orleans flooded. just as an effect from the rainfall that fell, not because of actually my storm surge or the damage immediately prosecute hurricane. now, we're kind of talking about a similar potential story if, in fact, that levee did break. all of that storm surge damage you see is down here in the fort myers area towards naples. that's where the storm surge came on. but to the north side is where all of the rain fell, some potts over 20 in. s of rain falling in under 24 hours. in 2003 there was a flood and a levee break along the river right there in kind of the same spot, and that happened because of 20 inches of rain that fell over a 3-day period. this time it falling in a 1-day period, you've got so much water in that area that it certa
