to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. hi, rick. >> it's dangerously hot out there.of the summer and happening towards the central part of september. the heat advisories extend up to main, jersey, parts of pennsylvania and breaking all kinds of records. new york, 95 today. that will break a record by 5 degrees. same goes across the south. texas, the heat has settled in there again. so dangerously and hot this summer. heat alerts and advisories in effect again. you'll break all kinds of records. austin, 107 degrees. in general, the weather pattern, the heat breaks down. moved to the southwest. we should be getting monsoon activity. we'll see the heat come. in we do get the heat relief in the northeast. you see it already. we had 100-degree temperatures across the northern plains. now 69 in chicago. some high temperatures only in the 50s. wore still 94 for the day. tomorrow in the 80s. unfortunately comes with a few showers. want to talk about hurricane lee. this is an incredible storm. it was just a tropical storm yesterday. now we've got at least a category two. that

pete: let's turn now to the chief, chief meteorologist rick reichmuth, for our fox weather forecast. all right. pete asked me, hey, should i go to the yankees game today or -- pete: well, i bought tickets yesterday. rick: it is going to be a complete washout. but he's like, oh, i didn't know there was a storm. i'm trying to get to a point here, that a lot of people didn't know there was a storm. there's a 70 mile-an-hour tropical storm the, snuck up on us. this time of year, you start to get potentially tropical systems that develop closer to land instead of way out to sea, and this is one of those. formed off the coast of the carolinas and florida with maybe 24-36 hours' notice and now a 70 mile-an-hour tropical storm came on land about an hour and a half ago, almost two ours -- hours ago right here in emerald isle. that's the area that's taking the pummeling of the storm surge. a lot of water being pushed in towards the norfolk area, causing flooding concerns right here, and that is a tornado warning. we'll see some tornadoes throughout the day today. you get that often with landfal

rick reichmuth. now this strike going into with its second day, they are at least planning talks today. want to update you on where things stand. we're hearing the gm says it's going to idle a plant in kansas because of a resulting parts shortage which would put 2,000 employees out of work. separately, ford or is laying off 600 at an an affected plant in michigan, so this is escalating just by the extension of this. we don't know how long it could go on, but grady trim the bl in wayne, michigan -- grady trimble in wayne, michigan, with the latest. >> reporter: neil, this is that ford plant where 600 workers have been laid off because of the striking workers. they're not able to do their jobs. you mentioned the uaw president tells us he is back at the bargaining table today trying to work out a deal. also in michigan today the are members of the biden administration that the president sent here to try to help with negotiations. but id asked the uaw president, shawn fein, if he wants their help, and he

let's turn to the meteorologist rick reichmuth. atural disasters, and over time people move on, the news is forgotten about, and you are doing great work. thanks for what you're doing for the people in hawaii. one story that, you know, comes in and then kind of supersedes the last one, idalia, still around 40,000 households without power, they're working hard for that. but for the most part, this is no threat for tropical activity. we've got this storm off the coast of africa, and this is the next one we're going to watch, about a 70% chance of this becoming the the named storm lee, and it pulls off toward the west and plenty of time to watch. down across parts of florida, the big bend is looking pretty good. we have been getting some rain hours a little farther towards the west, and i think it's going to dry out today x. then we've had some big four corners monsoon activity the last couple days. this energy pulls off toward the north, and we dry out a little bit. the heat remains an impact, another 4-5 days of heat that's going to

chief meteorologist rick reichmuth is here with the latest. >> reporter: the rain started again and ian umbrella. go figure. rachel: i've got a weatherman umbrella in my office. i will bring it down. >> not as heavy which is great news. won't hurt anymore of the flooding, laguardia terminal closed. an incredible storm, jfk about the wettest one day rain total ever which is pretty incredible, over 8 inches of rain. this was some kind of tropical activity. it was leftovers from what had been ophelia last week in. we have 28% of hurricane season still ahead of us so we are on the downhill slide which is great news, still have some moisture, the worst of it towards martha's vineyard, nantucket but scattered showers with us throughout the day today across parts of the northeast. it's out of here by tomorrow and we are going to talk about a beautiful week in the northeast, we just really need it, we had a rough go of it the last 10 days, temperatures in the upper 70s by monday. that's the case for much of the coming week. >> that some good news, thank you, rick. pete: the usc trojans take o

we have rick reichmuth, what we have to look forward to. whats going on, rick?form, hit the southeast and brought four days of gloom and rain across the northeast over the weekend. that remnants moved offshore and reformed a bit. not tropical. the remnants bringing more moisture back in across parts of the northeast. it's caused persistent on-shore flow, which has meant the high tides that we've had have caused flooding all weekend. we're at the last summer moon of the year, which is today, by the way. the high tide cycles are higher. you get rainfall totals like this. valley stream almost nine inches of rain from this storm. jfk airport, your wettest one day ever. this number here hasn't been updated just yet. this will be the wettest one-day that we've seen in the j.f.k. airport ever, which is amazing when you think about the rain events. we have gladding concern. the west side of this picture, things will begin to get better. we have one big band of storms that continues to pummel the same areas to the east of the city. central parts of long island, you can s

turn now to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for the fox first weather forecast. pics and again and take a look at maps and hurricane lee is out there now a category 3 store and had been a category 5, but it's to the north of the caribbean and this is go ahead news. no direct impact expected across any of the caribbean islands and around five days from now, it's a slow moving storm and will curve off towards the northeast. we're sure the south will not have impacts except for big waves and the northeast can't rule out impacts and probably seven to nine days from now if anything like that happens. what we're sure is going to happen is really rough waves and rip currents coming across eastern sea board. again, it's been a really deadly year for rip currents especially along the eastern sea board. last weekend in fact was again and now we've got this coming for us, if you're headed out towards the beaches be very careful. big storms across much of the northeast and southeast as well and front stalled out in the area and big storms firing throughout the afternoon and n

chief meteorologist chief rick reichmuth with the forecast. >> hey, it started raining.repare, you're a mettologist and didn't prepare. >> i know, i'm a mess. something is wrong. one came out but it's covering the camera guy, not me. >> today is the downhill slide beginning after this and statistically about 50% of our activity still remains and we're watching lee, this is now a category 2 storm and it's going to slowly move to the north of the caribbean and eventually take this right hand turn if you're in bermuda be watching orca fade indian merri bowl times be watching and talking maybe 7-10 days, 7-9 days now by the time it's up across areas of the northeast. temperature wise, big columbia down coming to much of the southern plains and you desperately need and it's been so incredibly hot this summer and it's been dry with the heat and drought that's really exploded across much of texas, new mexico, and arizona. we have good rain coming the next few days and that's going to help the drought and drop the temperatures. all right, rachel, back to you inside. rachel: all

chief meteorologist rick reichmuth has the latest, normal your put the stuff from right here, the subwayjersey and jersey to get that much rain, the dividing line was manhattan, jersey not that much, the eastern side of manhattan or northern manhattan, incredible amounts are in, cause bad flooding, jfk airport, the whole storm total, 8.65 inches, yesterday was the wettest day jfk ever had which is pretty amazing, central park, all the history of central park was yesterday. all of this was part of what was ophelia and brought all that gloom. the remnants reformed a little bit and brought more moisture and all this flooding for a second major flood like this in the last two years across parts of new york, this is what is left of the storm, some rain, nothing new. most is quite light and will diminish throughout the day, really nice stretch of weather for the next five days are across the northeast which is great news. one last thing, the tail end of this front has been stalled across this area, rain this weekend. by monday we will drive things out which will be good news. back to you. joe:

let's turn to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for a fox weather forecast.lly do that, i'm waiting 5 seconds. let's talk about hurricane lee really exploded into a category 5 storm a day and a half ago a day and 1/2 ago, down to a category 3 storm. to the north of the caribbean. north of puerto rico. pushing a lot of wave action here, very dangerous day on these beaches and notice it slows down in 5 days, starts to take this right-hand turn. one of the things we used to see what is going to happen with this storm is ensemble models. talking about the european model and the gfs model, the american model. we take each of those, where the current location is and initiate it with that location in different positions and different strengths and see what the models do with the storm and all of this continues to pull to the west. all of them pulled off to the north eventually. for the most part most of these a week from sunday have it somewhere off the eastern seaboard. not saying, our best guess is offshore but folks across the northeast need to watch this. get re

pete: let's turn to the chief, chief meteorologist rick reichmuth, for our weather forecast. k about the weather. big storms across much of the eastern seaboard and a big cooldown to the northern plains. show you what i'm talking about, 48 degrees in fargo, 55 in chicago right now. 599 in kansas city. that cooler air is going to settle all the way town across parts of texas the next few days, high temperatures into the 80s in dallas. you certainly deserve it. morning, cool air across the far northern plains. cold front slowly moves through, and so each morning over the next few mornings it gets a little bit cooler. 47, tuesday morning in minneapolis for your overnight if lows, so it's going to feel great. feels like fall. not across the eastern seaboard, in fact, we've got a front that's drape out across this area, big stormed yesterday. today we're going. to see that fire up again, and it is really humid. and that's going to continue for the next 4-5 days. today through tomorrow a chance of flooding, anywhere you see that green, likely needing going on. -- flooding going on.

chief meteorologist rick reichmuth is here with the headlines. freedom for about a half hour, and then they got him corralled again. an incredibly rainy day. obviously, the flooding such a big story. add that on to what was already a really wet spring, and it made the second -- it made for the second wettest september ever. yesterday was the eighth wet wettest day in the central park and the itest -- wettest day at jfk. all part of the remnants of tropical storm ophelia. we'll be done with this by tonight, tomorrow, and then we yet a nice stretch of weather the dry out. more rain coming to florida, this is how much moisture's in the atmosphere. there is a lot of it, and it's going to be throughout the day today, tomorrow, expect the see more showers. a front finally moves through by the time we get towards monday evening. much of florida drying out, humidity levels coming down, might even feel a tine think bit like fall -- tiny bit like fall. pete: thank you, rick. appreciate it. now to a few additional headlines starting with this, florida govern

let's turn to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. >> reporter: i am hungry now. look at this. households without power, they are doing a good job getting that back in at most of that will be done by the end of the weekend, forecast for cedar key, the area hit pretty hard, a lot of rain the last couple days, we start to dry out, improved conditions following the recovery of to, we are not at the peak of hurricane season yet, 70% of hurricane season still left, hurricane activity statistically. all the storms out here, idalia still has coastal impacts. this way of coming off the coast of africa will move to the west, next one we will watch, plenty of time to monitor, not saying we are going to be impacted but it's the next potential one we are looking at. because of idalia all the swells pulling towards the eastern seaboard and it will be a dangerous time. enjoyed the last unofficial weekend of summer, the beaches will be pretty dangerous and the heat is coming, really warm temperatures covering most of the country all weekend long. feeling very much like summer. back to you. pe

rick reichmuth has been tracking it all. rick?ystem. you can see the center getting close to the north carolina coast. and it's also not moving very quickly. because of that, sometime overnight into tomorrow morning that the center moves across the north carolina coastline. the impacts will be extreme and extensive. the storm is becoming tropical, so we have the strongest winds at the center. it expands out quite far. you can see rain across southern new jersey, extending in across virginia. towards maryland as well. that is what the cone looks like. notice this is sometime monday. the storm is going to stall out in this area. so we're going to have unsettled weather all the way until tuesday across a lot of areas around the mid-atlantic. tropical storm concerns and coastal flood watches, all of this really gets going tonight, charles. tough, a rough day in to the northeast. we're not out of the woods until tuesday. charles? >> charles: thanks. folks, remember, fox weather is your hurricane headquarters. for all things tropical an

to rick reichmuth. . what are you seeing? >> listen, we know we'll have big wave impacts along the eastern seaboard, which has been the case the last month. we've had very significant amount of fatalities from the currents along the atlantic seaboard. this last week, a number of them where people died getting out in to the water. we have another storm that will make things dangerous. that's for sure what we know. category four storm right now. track of this is going to the north of puerto rico. the north of the lesser antilles. good news, staying out to sea. not having a huge impact aside from the wave impacts even across parts of the caribbean. notice, stays over warm water for a while. this blue is the only spot in the atlantic that the water temperatures are below average right now. that's a upwelling for when hurricane franklin went over that area and pulled up cooler water and brought it up to the service. so water temperatures there cooler than average. we have this incredible strengthening from th

let's turn to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. >> reporter: last weekend was leave, this weekend ophelia won't have too many more. big storm developed overnight, night before last, got going and became a strong tropical storm, almost a hurricane. center of the storm on shore in parts of north carolina bringing a lot of rain with it, pretty significant in land flooding from this. 3 to 5 inches of rain plus as well. it doesn't move quickly. by tomorrow afternoon, somewhere here, the storm stalls out a little bit, reince itself out, tropical storm warnings in effect and hurricane watches across north carolina. a lot of areas dealing with coastal flooding, high tide cycles with onshore push of moisture, 1 to 3 feet of storm surge to myrtle beach, south carolina to surf city, north carolina. then two to six feet out towards cape hatteras. then towards the lower chesapeake bay. we have storm surge across parts of the jersey shore and the long island sound. a lot of area on the eastern seaboard, a lot of areas getting additional rain. already had a lot of rain, 3 to 4 inches. some areas are sat

let's turn now to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for our fox weather update. ol or the fast good? you need to isolate those so we noaa it is -- i'm willing to give up the fast food. all right, let's talk weather out there. it is really warm. it feels like mid summer for so many people, 72 in chicago, 69 in fargo and really high temperatures today. down across parts of the southeast, a little bit of rain, again, especially across the panhandle of florida. but the big bend after hurricane idalia, you're looking pretty good for the next number of days for the clean-up efforts. we have a lot of monsoonal moisture, flooding around the vegas area, that's moving up across parts of the northern rockies, so we'll dry out a little bit in the southwest. look at this heat, minneapolis today, 98 degrees for a high. a's about 20 the degrees warm -- that's about 20 degrees warmer than you should be. we'll drop temperatures down by midweek. let me she you how this works, researchly you'll see -- eventually you'll see this cold front, chicago, on tuesday you're still 91. new yo

let's turn now i to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for our fox weather forecast. rick: yeah.stimates, maybe a $20 billion disaster from idalia and, fortunately, it hit in a relatively unpopulated area. say it had gone farther east and south towards tampa. storm made landfall in the big bend, certainly the folks there took a big impact from this. power outages still around 63,000 homes without power across parts of florida. they think they'll have that 95% up, back by tomorrow. we're really getting into the peak of hurricane season right now. in fact, september 10th is the statistical peak, but about 70 to % of our activity the remains. there's bundies turbans that we're going to work, a thing you see coming off of africa. we get these waves that often times form into pretty significant stormses. that one right there is the next one we're going to watch, see if that does form. we have plenty of time to watch it, we'll keep you up-to-date on that. we have what was hurricane idalia is now around bermuda, but it's the pushing a lot of water in toward the atlantic coast, and this

for answers all the models so far chief meteorologist rick reichmuth has been monitoring the storm from the fox weather center in new york. good evening, rick. >> rick: good evening, bret. not worried about florida at all they had enough with idalia. category 4 storm last night it went to a category 5 storm. went from an 80 mile-per-hour hurricane to 165 mile-per-hour cat 5 hurricane in about 12 hour period. unbelievable strengthening that's because it went over very warm water and upper level environment strengthening. notice as it most forward in its path here water temperatures cool down just a tiny bit. in some cases a little bit below average. one of the only spots below average anywhere in the atlantic basin is from some water that got pulled up from hurricane franklin about a week and a half ago. that hurricane moved over and pulled up the cooler water from below up to the surface and so maybe that helps a tiny bit. here's a look at what happens over the next few days. stays north of the caribbean north of the greater antilles and lesser antilles. stays out shore and makes a righ
