rick salinger in centennial, colorado, spoke to students who knew the alleged gunman. >> reporter: itas a day of mourning and confusion. students trying to make sense of why an innocent girl was shot in the head. and why an 18-year-old debate star karl pierson fired recklessly into the school before taking his own life. katie snidely remembers that pierson wrote a speech in september that the speech and debate coach did not like. >> from what i knew, karl gave a speech that the speech coach didn't approve of and had inappropriate remarks. i think it was more in a humor kind of way but the teacher took it the wrong way. >> reporter: one student described pierson's speech as sexually perverse but in a humorous way. pierson did not take the rejection well. joel redmond was the co-captain of the debate team with pierson. >> i told him, you know, your future is not what happens to you in high school and so much more than that. >> reporter: but he said pierson was removed from the speech and debate team after threatening the coach tracy murphy with his life. >> a lot of high schoolers, a lo

rick salinger of cbs station kcnc has the latest. >> reporter: this makeshift memorial appeared at arapaho high school where classes will not resume until after the new year. friday's attack lasted just 80 seconds. >> repor >> reporter: investigators have reviewed recordings from school cameras to track carl pierson's movements. the 18-year-old legally purchased the 12 gauge shotgun he used just last week and bought multiple rounds of ammunition on friday. police say he fired five times at random and hit 17-year-old claire davis in the head. but his primary target was debate coach and librarian tracy murphy. students say murphy had taken disciplinary action against pierson after the student threatened him. joe redmond was pierson's friend. >> it began with the speech he wrote and it escalated from there and karl took himself so seriously he thought that when we said no to that speech we were saying no to him. >> reporter: a sheriff's deputy assigned to arapaho and a guard were in the school at the time but pierson shot himself in the library before they could reach him. pierson's family re
