in 2012, while running for president, newt gingrich and rick santorum and rick perry all attended a candidates forum sponsored by personhood usa, and at that forum, they all signed a pledge to pursue this personhood thing at the federal level. the republican party's eventual presidential candidate, mitt romney, he didn't attention that candidates forum, but when he was asked whether he, too, supported the personhood initiative federally, he said, "absolutely." oh, but wait, there's more. in 2012, while mitt romney was running against president obama, congress at the time was debating something called the blunt amendment. the blunt amendment wasn't a potential ban on birth control like the personhood initiative was. it was a bill to allow employers to pick and choose what their employees get from health insurance. it sprung out of republicans' apparent desire that your boss should be able to block you from getting contraception specifically but really would apply to anything in health care. in the 2012 presidential debate, president obama just hammered mitt romney for supporting that. >> a majo

but you look at that entire lineup -- ted cruz, rand paul, paul ryan rick santorum, chris christie ishe only one who stood with the president right before election day 2012, the only one who expanded medicaid in his state. there are ideological problems that christie has with the conservative base. >>> and i've got this note in, mark, i'm not sure if you've seen seen it. luke russert is reporting that congresswoman marsha fudge the chair, has send a note to speaker boehner, calling on him to remove congressman darrell issa as chairman of the house oversight and government reform committee as a result of this confrontation yesterday, where he cut the mike to ranking member elijah cummings yesterday during the hearing with a former head of the i.r.s. lois lerner. >> i'm not sure this move will change house speaker john boehner, but you have to look at the politics. as you and i were discussing about this yesterday, if you are arguing this isn't political, this is a legitimate investigation, cutting off the the democrats on the committee isn't a good way to dispel a lot of those concerns

let's go to the results back in 2012, adelson, foster freeze, they got behind rick santorum, they keptafloat longer than they should have been kept afloat. in fact it helped out the republican party. it doesn't work out too well when you have this money from one or two people. this kissing the king makers, that's done on both sides. what i will say, however, whether you have a real argument on the state level, if you go back to 2010, one of the things that does not get enough attention in the media, is the amount of money that was put in by various right wing billionaires in trying to determine the outcomes of state houses and those state senate races that have a substantial impact on what happens in various states regarding all types of regulations, they ultimately end up benefiting the business interests of those donors. >> that's really well said. an i think there's an argument to be made that on the presidential level, there's already so much money involved, the addition of a sheldon adelson or a foster freeze doesn't matter that much. but, you know, one other thing i would point o

governor christie and scott caller and rick santorum rounding out the group. jackie could you in addition, welcome to you both. what have we learned overall. what's your big takeaway? >> you know, it shows that the conservative praert isn't of one mind. there are some there are some things that divide them. not everyone is on the same page. they're still working through some issues that they haven't quite resolved from 2012. >> so how much, beth, how much weight does the straw poll carry? did he deliver a message that would resonate with a national audience? >> well, i think what you're seeing there is the appeal of rand paul and ron paul, his father before him to young republicans, young conservativ s conservatives. granted cpac buses in a lot of young folks to attend every year, but his message resonates with the young republicans, the sort of noninterventionist approach the if the republican party will have a future, they probably do need to embrace more of a rand paul view of the world. granted, he's conservative on other issues, but he's the only rep show

a lot more today by some formers and perhaps future presidential candidate, mike huckabee and rick santorumthe last time huckabee had a national platform, the conservatives had to spend days apologizing. he keeps stoking 2016 speculation, heading to iowa next month to keynote an event. his publisher also announced this week he's coming out with a book in the winter of 2015 called "god, guns, grits, gravy." winter 2015. about three months before the caucuses. john cornyn, who actually more closely had a harder time escaping a runoff than maybe people thought he would in texas on tuesday. also speaking this hour. collective washington looked to texas where cornyn ended up getting just 59% of the vote, and said the establishment won. but cornyn spent millions. his main challenger didn't campaign, meaning an anybody-but-john-cornyn vote got 41%. boy, that's a bigger deal than people realize. you needed a sign that the tea party is winning even if their candidates aren't, this picture, by the way, says it all. look at senate republican leader mitch mcconnell brandishing a rifle at cpac, bringing
