our senior economics reporter, steve liesman, and our own rick santelli. john, it is clear that the fiscal cliff has wall street's full attention right now. do you expect a -- something to happen by december 31 or not? >> we expect something is going to happen. what that's going to be, we don't have the clarity we're expecting just yet. i think it's simple math. everybody knows what has to be done. obviously, we've had many, many studies over the course of the last few years that tell us what has to be done. so it is math. it's just about them getting in a room and hammering out the details. so we obviously need some revenue and some cuts across the board. i think it's how those are going play out in terms of what portion and how much is going to be what the market's really keying on. i think $4 trillion is basically the number that's kind of out there. i think if it comes in higher than that, it's going to be positive. if it doesn't, it's going to be a negative. >> so steve liesman, what do you think this tells us about compromise? over the last couple of

we have rick santelli and steve liesman joining us. steve, it comes after a day of pretty decent economic data we got. >> yeah, it's certainly a better way to go into what the uncertain effects of hurricane sandy are going to be. to have the economy stabilized on a slight upswing from what weren't great numbers. the consumer hanging in there with the biggest problem being business spending. i think ultimately what we're going to see tomorrow are numbers that are in line, 125 to 150. i don't get too hung up in 10,000 here, 10,000 there. show me 250 and i'll be really excited. show me that 70 or 50,000, and i'll start getting concerned. >> rick, is that priced into the market? what kind of reaction will we get? >> i think it is priced in. i'm not sure we get a big market move on that. i congratulate the bureau of labor statistics. i'm sure there was pressure potentially to delay the number. many are glad they didn't. i think over the last couple days steve and i have raised issues that this is going to be an important number for a number

rick santelli joins us from the cme to give us the markets immediate reaction and steve liesman is ons every month. aed has of the numbers we've been watching the futures and the market has been hanging on at this point, barely budging because this could really drive the way things are going to be trading today. you see right now the dow futures actually all of the futures are modestly positive at this point, only by a couple of points. the numbers are expected to be 125k and 7.9. let's get to hampton pearson. >> up 171,000, october non-farm payrolls increased by 171,000 jobs, the unemployment rate 7.9%, no change in average hourly earnings. private sector job growth in october plus 184,000. we had significant revisions for august and september, an additional 50,000 jobs were added to the august number, an additional 34,000 for september, doing the math, an additional 84,000 jobs than were previously reported added to payle rohs over the previous two months. job growth across the board, professional and business services up 51,000, health care plus 31,000, retail adding 36,000, leisur

rick santelli is in chicago and steve liesman in studio with us. you take it away so we can get the numbers. >> buzz and the survey says non-farm productivity third quarter preliminary up 1.9, unit labor costs they actually are in the red, that's a good thing, down 0.1. if we look at revisions to both numbers we see our last look was 1.9 so pretty equal on productivity, that number kind of fits in but the drop in unit labor costs is something pretty exciting, up 1.7 our last look. jobless claims 363,000, that is down 9,000 from 372,000, which was originally 369,000, so you can kind of see the way it fits in. it steps only down a bit. it seems to have stabilized from some of the white noise of seasonals, not turned in data a couple of weeks ago. continuing claims week in arrears to that number around 3.26 million and people down here still throwing their arms up in the air about adp which is 158 which matches with 16 2, which was 88, revised back to 116 under the new methodology. back to you. >> stick around, we'll talk about this. >> what did he me

we want to bring in steve liesman and rick santelli to talk more about the outcome and what the outcomethe congressional races tonight will impact the fiscal cliff. rick, let's start with you on the fiscal cliff. obviously, if mitt romney wins, he said the next day he is going to focus on the fiscal cliff. how does that play out? how do you envision this happening? >> i think it's going to be very difficult, but the complexion of congress, as eamon pointed out, is key. if the republicans run the table and do cross over in the senate, they hold on to the house. the fiscal cliff issue gets watered down quickly. same if the democrats run the table. i think we know what the outcome there would be. i think if you see the senate stay as it is f the house stays as it is, it almost doesn't matter. i think there's going to be an issue. boehner's commented sounded like a mirror image of senator schumer's comments a couple weeks ago. they've both put down markers. i think that's why the underlying tone of this election is leadership. i think both sides do not want to blink, and you need somebody t

. >> rick, thank you. stevenew york and steve the big thing coming up today has to be when bernanke is going to be speaking. we talked earlier about that. what really do you expect to hear today? >> not unrelated to the report we just got, becky, i think that's a good question because i think bernanke is going to be relatively pleased with what's happened to mortgages. i think there are some on the fed who wanted more of an impact on mortgage rates, given the fed's decision to buy $40 billion in mortgages on a monthly basis, but what they would argue is that the effects are yet to come, because they would say that the effect of fed purchases come with the total stock that the fed owns and/or is taken off the market rather than the cumulative purchases and they really haven't had a chance to wind up, if you look at the fed's balance sheet it hasn't changed very much. >> seriously? >> yes. >> wow. >> i think the fed is going to see, be relatively happy about what's happening in the housing market, this decline is
