listen, i appreciate what rick tyler has to say.aign by sort of not answering whether these two will go after each other, but look at what we've seen over the past week. the campaign is drawing contrast with donald trump which is something ted cruz is expected to do as he's making his closing argument coming into iowa with polls showing this race tightening now. cruz holding once a commanding -- a lead that was at least within the margin of error. trump now sort of tugging away at that. sort of chip aping away at that. you see cruz down 6% since the last "des moines register"/bloomberg poll in december. and that could be potentially because he has come under now increased scrutiny as he's stepped in this front-runner top-tier status. so i do think we'll see a more aggressive tone potentially from both of these guys tonight. >> yeah. and sam, then there's the issue of, you know, the governors in tonight's debate. christie, bush and kasich. they need to kind of break out from the mold of the more traditional republican mold. >> yeah.

you did see rick tyler, one of ted cruz's spokespeople today being very tough on palin for endorsingrump and saying that she was making a bad judgment that would reflect badly on her. the palin family, as we all know, is a pretty fiercely loyal clan. and it's going to be interesting to see cruz himself after rick tyler said what he said, his spokesman, cruz himself on twitter tried to de-escalate this. my guess is cruz doesn't want to fight with the palin family and probably wants to turn the page on this. there's just no good -- there's nothing good about this for him. there's no way to spin it. and i think fighting with palin risks alienating people in the conservative media, who in the last few days have been more partial towards him, than they have been for trump, because of some of the nature of some of trump's attacks on senator cruz. >> john, talk radio, are they about to pick sides and go cruz over trump? >> i think some of them have. >> the most interesting thing that came out of our show today was kelly ann conway, who runs one of the leading cruz super pacs, basically tele

cruz spokesman rick tyler tried to get ahead of the news by saying a trump endorsement would impune palin's conservative cred. bristol palin responded, after hearing what cruz is now saying about my nom in a negative, knee-jerk reaction, makes me hope my mom does endorse trump. iowa, of course, is do or die, i think for the cruz campaign. and the key to iowa is the v evangelical vote. for now at least cruz is still following that track with garnering nearly 33% of the vote for himself. but cruz's no good, very bad day has turned into a pile-on. a super pac supporting marco rubio released a new ad, hammering cruz on taxes and a shot at his citizenship. >> what's canadian about ted cruz? cruz wants a value added tax, like they have in socialist countries. obama and pelosi say they're open to it. president reagan hated it. >> we'll not do a deep dive on the vat tax for now, but that's where rubio wants to go. let's talk to a man who knows iowa very well. joining me now is sam clovis, co-chair of donald trump's national campaign, but a veteran of iowa. good to have you back on the show, sir. so

look who we grabbed, rick tyler. in the minds of a lot of voters the alternative to trump? and i have to tell you that earlier today i was at a marco rubio event and that's what they're looking for. i mean all the people i talked to were there, they narrowed it down to two or three people. the people who were leaning, maybe weren't sure at all. for a lot of them, frankly, it was about they were tired of donald trump, they didn't think that he was electable, they didn't think he had the experience, they mentioned isis a lot. what makes you think you'll be the alternative? >> i think that ted cruz is the most prepared. the other problem marco has is that he campaigned as an anti-amnesty candidate. >> how is cruz more prepared than marco rubio? >> i think on a number of issues. on foreign policy, on his tax policy. he has worked in the supreme court. he's worked for the administration. so he's got a lot of experience. he's been a solicitor general who's argued before the supreme court so he has a wide breadth of experie

rick tyler, national spokesman out of des moines with me. nice to see you again.eeping, i know that. it's crunch time and you knew that was coming. why the change in strategy toward marco rubio? >> i don't know. there's no one on right now. >> i don't know it's a change of strategy. we shifted up the ads in the mix now. we've got four now. and one was the ad you just saw about marco rubio, who has been trying to muddy the waters about amnesty. marco rubio was a chief proponent of gang of eight. he ran as an anti amnesty candidate. that's what you saw in the ad. and then -- when he was elected, he joined up with chuck schumer and passed in the united states senate a pro amnesty bill. and if this party elects a pro amnesty candidate we will lose to hillary clinton. >> marco rubio just this morning called the campaign people and says what ted cruz now is doing in iowa is a deceitful campaign. >> and what basis would mariah careyo say that? he would campaign -- that was a shark tank video there when he was a candidate in 2010. he was an anti amnesty candidate. i will

rick tyler said he would be very unhappy if that happened. we've reached out to trump's campaign, we've not gotten any information at all. if you look at the timing, it's going to be at 6:00 eastern time, going right into the national newscasts. so we may very well see if it was indeed sarah palin, if it was all timed for maximum exposure. donald trump has been very good at getting free media. >> that's true. >> the very type voter who is behind sarah palin, may be the very voter specifically in iowa right now who remains dip described between donald trump and ted cruz in that state. sarah palin has praised both of these candidates. she was at that stop iran rally here in washington, d.c. in september. sheep said of donald trump only a couple months ago that he's tapped into america's great populist tradition of speaking the voice of the working class. so this actually could be impactful for that remaining limited number of voters in that state of iowa right now who are still on the fence between these two sort of anty establishment conservat

joining me now is rick tyler, the national spokesman for ted cruz's campaign.i want to talk about the "des moines register." they endorsed rubio. how important is that and why didn't they select your candidate, do you think? >> the "des moines register" has been a liberal paper. they've support comprehensive immigration reform and amnesty. they chose the two candidates they thought would pass amnesty, marco rubio and hillary clinton. >> all right. what about this back and forth between these two candidates. donald trump has said grudgingly, he'd vote for your candidate if he won the nomination. bob dole made a point of saying he wouldn't vote for senator cruz. what do you think? >> well, bob dole can vote whoever he wants to vote for. but senator cruz has said he'd vote for the nominee, sign the pledge and his word means something. when senator cruz went to washington he did what he said he's going to do. that may not be popular in washington but it is popular with the voters. we're happy. we're about where we are. >> you've been a gop operative for a long time

site of tonight's debate in north charleston, south carolina, ted cruz's communications director rick tylers with us. good to see you. >> good to be with you. >> let me start with that story since that's the one people are talking about today. and i know that you've been arguing the campaign has been saying that you weren't hiding this loan, but why wasn't it mentioned in those campaign finance reports? >> you know, as ted cruz said, it was an oversight. it wasn't disclosed on the fec filing. when you file the fec filing the campaign thought they'd filled it out correctly. well known that senator cruz put in about $1.4 million of his own money into winning his runoff election and subsequently the senate race and he had put a lot of savings and cash into that race. he liquidated some stocks but did take out a loan, which was really the loan was against assets in his own brokerage account. so he was really borrowing the money from himself. and that was not disclosed in the fec form. we're waiting for guidance on the fec on how to amend and correct that, but as it was said before, all of those
