well, back with us is phillip klein and rick tyler.llip, having left the republican party, as i mentioned just now, i put the question to you. how much of the calculation here goes even beyond november? >> i think a lot of it. as i said earlier, for decades, the republican party, at least, even though it didn't always follow through, the idea was people agreed that at least fundamentally, philosophically, it was a limited government party. and clearly, donald trump has blown that up. and i think that what's happened is with the republican party, is sort of two things. in one sense, they've had a problem with overpromising and underdelivering. they campaign, for instance, on the idea of repealing and replacing obamacare, and then, they get in, and they're confronted with the reality, first, that they didn't have control of the senate, they only controlled the house. and then that they don't control the white house. and so when they're in power, they make the legitimate argument that, look, without full control of government, we can't re

i also want to bring in former spokesman for the ted cruz presidential campaign, rick tyler. rick, we are waiting on this house republican conference meeting, we're waiting to hear from speaker ryan on the hill. we just heard from luke about some of the policy differences. you also look at entitlement reform. paul ryan's famous budget at this point called for among other things reforming entitlements, cutting entitlements, especially social security. we've heard from donald trump on more than one occasion that he doesn't want to touch social security. that these entitlements should remain unchanged. how do you bridge those kinds of policy chasms, rick tyler? >> well, it's going to be tough. paul ryan has always been a policy guy, and he understands on a really deep level the intricacies of the economy. what he also believed is that you could communicate a conservatism that would be popular, that people would understand. and that it's rooted in the idea that we're 4% of the world's population, we create about a third of the world's growth. there's a reason for that and it has t

rick tyler, former senior communications adviser for the ted cruz campaign. from a strategy ex-standpoint, kelly ayotte, senator from new hampshire, swing state in new hampshire, she's in a tough re-election race up there, a republican senator, she said yesterday that she will support donald trump but she won't endorse him. i have no idea what the difference is there but speaks to her dilemma. you have the point middle of the road voters in new hampshire could be phoned by donald trump, on the other hand, donald trump got a big win in new hampshire republican party. what's the play for somebody like kelly ayotte? what would be the advice strategically? i never understood the support, endorse, the problem is you make everybody mad. you make donald trump supporters mad and anti-donald trump supporters mad. you may as well pick a side. she hasn't done that. look, a lot of candidates are weighing their options. it's hard to predict what's going to happen. donald trump, we know, one thing has negative numbers. he has high negative numbers among women, african-amer

rick tyler is still with us. stay with us. we'll talk to you in a minute.y tur is in south bend, indiana. katy, it's interesting. donald trump touched on the polls. we know he likes to look at the polls. but our latest polling does show him up with a 15-point lead in indiana. yet he's got multiple events today at this 11th hour. why is he still campaigning so hard in the hoosier state today? >> i think that was the plan, to have these events so there was no need to change that. and also, i think the campaign has learned not to trust every single poll. there have been polls that have suggested that he's losing when he's winning, that he's winning when he lost. look at what happened in iowa. he was up in the last few days and then ted cruz ended up coming out and taking that state away from him. they don't want the same thing to happen here in indiana, but they are more confident about indiana than they certainly were about iowa. they've done a lot of campaigning here so far. they've gotten a lot of resounding support, as you can hear, there is a train going

. >> let's bring in rick tyler, msnbc political analyst and joe watkins, republican strategist. tlemen with a good morning to you both. rick, i'll start with you. i want to talk about protests at donald trump's rally last night. 35 people arrested there. so where does it go from here? what does a convention look like? a trump white house look like? will there be protests following him everywhere? >> i don't know about the white housement we'll see what happens there. but yeah, i think the protests are going to follow along. the protests have been at republican conventions forever. maybe this one will be quite larger. but alex, i think the protests help donald trump because they emphasize that you know, this is the left that's trying to shut down free speech, it doesn't help that you have a lot of mexican flags on american soil. i know people are trying to show their heritage and pride but it's sort of reinforces donald trump's message that you're losing your job to illegal immigration. >> rick, i got to ask. you said it helps donald trump. is that with his base? >> yes. >> or --

hallie, thanks, i want to bring in rick tyler.r the ted cruz presidential campaign. again, i apologize in advance if they do decide to have some sort of impromptu news conference, we'll go to that. paul ryan has just as much at stake as donald trump some could argue. how does his embrace or distancing of donald trump, how does that affect him post election, after november? >> it all depends who's going to win the election. craig, what they've done, paul ryan set the expectations as low as could be. they are saying first step, they are saying it's a good start. the reason is they don't trust donald trump. they think he's unpredictable. these two couldn't be more than 180 degrees out of phase. paul ryan thinks of the republican party as an intellectual party and wants to be a vehicle for conservative policies and party of substance whose policies can lift america up and grow the economy. he's tackled entitlement reform, path to prosperity, which would balance the budget. this is his vision of how the republican party could grow. he

tyler? back to you. >> rick, thank you very much. you may be tempted to buy cheap stocks. but cheaper isn't necessarily working in this market. our michael santoli has that story. >> if you look at the most statistically cheap stocks coming into this year, the ones with the really low pe ratios, they've actually acted more like value traps. i'll give you some clusters of stocks that would have qualified here. apple most prominently. people talking about for a couple years now. trades less than ten times expected earnings. just about right now. it has not worked. kept going down. old retail, the mall retailers, macy's, kohl's, gap, these were cheap on a price earnings basis even before this last leg down the big banks have not been able to get out of their own way. they also look cleep on book value. airlines, you want to talk about something that looks cheap, five times earnings, autos not getting the benefit of high car sales. all of the stocks are in a market with a 16 multiple. the market seems to be saying they're peek earns or the companies themselves face some struct
