rick tyler, an analyst, amber phillips, a reporter for the washington post. let us start with jeff bennett at the white house. what else did we hear from the white house? >> reporter: let's pick up where the president left off. you talked about rod rosenstein. testifies the focus of the new york times story. it was reported that rod rosenstein questioned the president's fitness for office. also wondered aloud about wearing a wire to secretly record the president. the meeting was supposed to have a meeting. it was said then that he would wait until he came back to the white house for the two of them to meet in person. then there was a brett kavanaugh situation. the president said he didn't want to do anything that would call into question kavanaugh's ultimate confirmation. now it appears rod rosenstein and president trump are having the meeting we've been tracking for weeks. they're going to talk aboard air force one. the president suggested the two of them have a great relationship. president trump told kristen welker he has no plans to fire rod rosenstein. w

and rick tyler. we are one week away from the midterm elections.to arizona, though. new numbers in that state's u.s. senate race show the democrat doubling her lead from last month with 50% of the vote, a six-point lead over the republican congresswoman martha mcsally. mcsally's vote percentage lines up with president trump's approval rating in the state, 44% according to the poll. 49% disapprove. >> i think that number right there is the key to have trump's approval at 44%. as goes trump's approval ratings, so goes the fortunes of republican candidates. republicans were hopeful that the past few weeks in terms of sort of opposition research that had emerged about sinema, all sorts of comments she made in the past five years where she had made some controversial statements about her state. they thought that was going to erode her standing in the state. in this poll, the personal rating for the candidates sinema ahead by six points here. this is a very encouraging poll for democrats. >> like tiyou see these numbers and they move pretty quickly, but

joining us now is republican strategist rick tyler. ay, rick, when you take that list, the president can tick through it for a campaign ad. some people could say, well, look, he kept his promises. but those promises that he kept are not only not just a win for many republicans, for most americans. so are they really a win? >> it's a bit of a mixed bag, stephanie. i'd say, look, on the nafta, the changes were marginal. nafta was being renegotiated anyway. it needed to be updated. it was. it's essentially taking a 2,000-page document, ripping off the cover, putting a new name on t adding a new chapter, and doing some editing. what's amazing is donald trump has now joined the globalists and has convinced his base he's ripped you have nafta. what he's done is embraced nafta and embraced substantially what nafta was because most of it remains in place. on taxes, i would say that i think he got a big win there, but it remains to be seen if most americans will feel that. corporations got it. people who own investments saw a big bump in the sto

rick tyler, and msnbc political analyst, victoria defrancesco. peter, i mean, last night, even by trump standards was all over the place. 18 days to go. he's going to keep on the trail. his schedule, they say is flexible. he's going to figure out day by day where he's needed, and he's got this message that everyone needs to pretend that he is on the ballot. is this, i don't know, high risk, high reward gamble or does it matter because he always sees himself as a winner no matter what? >> it's very interested, he said the other day that if republicans lose the midterms it will not be because of him. it will not be a rejection of him. you can be sure if they win the midterms he will say it's a victory for him. he's going from town to town and district to district saying vote as if i was on the ballot. that's a function of reality. this is a nationalized election in which people are voting, at least in part, on their feelings about trump and the way things are going, so he might as well own it in that sense. he might as well go out there and say vot

>>> all right, to the bond market we go and rick santelli tracking the action at the cme hi, rick >> hi, tyler are definitely starting to take notice of all this volatility. maybe it was because we breached unchanged on the year. look at one week of 10s. today seems to be the big day. if you open it up to the 8th of may, you can see that we now are trading under that key high of 3.11, but if you go to 30-year bonds, you can see when they broke out above 3.25, they're still well above 3.25, 10s to 30s spread has changed 30s are the best trading on the curve, only down three basis points all other maturities are down four to five basis points. finally, the dollar index. it really has been a stellar trade. if you look at a chart since august 1st, one thing should jump out at you. we were for a while above that mid-august high, and that high goes back to june of '17 that high was around 96.73 for a while, we were at 17-month highs. we've dipped below it a bit. but even at current levels, the dollar's having a stellar week melissa lee, back to you. >> rick santelli, thank you. >>> up next, a closer
