let's bring in a democratic strategist, former chief of staff to joe manchin and rick tyler. s is a democratic socialist. how do you think his critique of u.s. foreign policy will play with voters here? >> well, i think iowa is actually going to play very well. i can't believe i'm saying this, but for bernie sanders, the advantage goes to him -- >> it's all right, you can say it. >> among the four top candidates who are competing for the nomination, and iowa tends to be dovish. bernie's not a pacifist. he voted for the war in afghanistan, although he voted against the war, some say the invasion of iraq. but his answer is quite different. everybody had the same sort of answer that everybody else had. soleimani, really bad guy, glad he's dead, but he -- and really sort of equivocal. bernie hasn't been equivocal about it at all. and he's had a very -- although i disagree with it, i think i disagree with his ultimate answers. he's had a very clear and consistent foreign policy position that he hasn't actually talked much about over the years. he's been very clear and he's been ver

chris lu, rick tyler join us. chris, we can argue about influence of endorsements.le have different opinions on that. but to the extent they can be influential on some level at the very least, they may encourage people who weren't thinking about either of the candidates to give them another look by endorsing two candidates, does it dilute the effectiveness? >> look, i think the biggest boost here is to amy klobuchar. obviously we're talking about her in a way we wouldn't be talking about her otherwise. a lot of voters might be willing to give her a second look now. as you say in iowa and through the democratic primaries, a fluid process now, and what was important in the "new york times" endorsement was her electability, ability to carry counties in minnesota in 2016 that hillary clinton could not carry. but i will say i look at all endorsements with a big skepticism. i was with obama in 2008, january, 2008 "new york times" endorsed hillary clinton over obama. three days later, ted kennedy endorsed obama over clinton, i would argue that the ted kennedy endorsement f

joining me now, gabby orr, daniel strouse, and rick tyler. to say, i always wondered what the catalyst was for that comment by rex tillerson. what's the most shocking revelation you've seen from this book? >> i think it was that meeting that led rex tillerson, who by the way was the only person to stand up to donald trump in that meeting, the way the authors describe it, mike pence sat there like he was a wax museum figure, mattis fell in line, he was infuriated but would not stand up to the president. to paraphrase reagan, it's not that donald trump doesn't know a lot, it's just that so much of what he knows just isn't so. he just reveals himself over and over. and these military and state department leaders who were in the room at the tank were basically -- made a huge miscalculation, but they were trying to educate trump on american leadership around the world, that we are a better planet when we are -- we are deployed and using our assets wisely around the world. and trump turned it into we should be making a profit off the military. whic
