of ridges vary with different rates of spreading.te the usefulness of indirect means of studying the sea floor, more direct observations must sometimes be made. samples are dredged to examine the makeup of the sea bed, and cameras operated by remote control are sent to the bottom of the ocean. trying to take a picture is really hard because it's pitch black. you have to bring your own lighting. and turn it on and off. a glamourous way of studying the ocean floor is to go in a small submarine. i've taken 12 dives to the deep ocean. it's like going to mars. but that's very frustrating, too. it's like doing geology in a jeep at midnight with dirty windows with your headlights without ever being able to get out of the jeep. it's very frustrating business. it's lucky for us that the oceanic crust and the processes in the ocean are relatively simple compared to the land, or we'd never figure it out at all. but even with these limitations, submersibles and remote cameras have provided a wealth of information about the sea floor. unique life

it happened at 4:00 again southbound 680 just before stone ridge drive. is investigating what happened. they don't have all the details yet but they know the person that died is a male victim and investigators believe he just wondered on to the highway. we don't know if that man was impaired or under the influence. that is all part of the investigation that is under way right now. it happened at 4:00 this morning. driver involved is cooperating with investigators. there is a tow truck parked right in front of that vehicle that has been here since the last half hour or so. that car will likely be towed away as evidence in this fatal accident investigation. but in the meantime the backup was stretching from stone ridge drive almost to al costa. we talked to a lot of drivers that were stuck out here for the last hour and 20 minutes including a flight attendant at san jose airport who had to call their airline. >> and this is my last flight. i'm retiring. so yes this is very surprising. no, this doesn't happen every day. i'm just happy i'm not the one involve

the incident at which you are looking dead was just north of stone ridge. this traffic that is getting by does not represent an opening to the freeway. the chp are just trying to get all the cars that were and the back up. the corners band did just arrived on the scene and this gives motorists good news. the corners man has arrived and chp has opened up this side of the traffic. they were stuck back it 680 and we are starting to see the end of the back up here. i did talk to is chp officer and he stated that around 3:30 a.m. and pedestrian was struck and killed by at least one car on 680. they deny have no idea of the circumstances. they are conducting their investigation and once the corner takes the body away they still have more work to do. the fire department will have to come off and clean up the roadway. the chp officer thought that it will probably take about a number hour but we will see the total south bond area open up. let's take a look at the traffic map just show you the location once again. >> the closure this this at interstate 580. westbound
