riggleman.w very much in the public eye, because he's written a book which is coming out tomorrow, about his work as a staffer for the january six committee. he had an interesting path to the committee. he spent more than a decade in the air force, where he worked as an intelligence officer. in 2003, it was posed as national security agency, and in a few years later, he cofounded a military contract company. before selling that business, riggleman and his wife began a new venture, opening a distillery in virginia blue ridge mountains. it was their frustration with virginia's liquor taxes and strict regulations, which by the way are quite strict, that inspire riggleman to get into politics. and 2016, you launched a quixotic campaign for governor, calling it a quote, whiskey rebellion, and when he dropped up three months later before the republican primary. soon, neither opportunity arose, a congressional seat opened up in virginia's fifth district. the incumbent there, republican tom gary, you ma

there's been pushback from the committee about some of the claims riggleman has made. tell us about that. >> i think the committee was frustrated. they'd been irked by the way denver has put some of these -- when they see the committee findings in his own book. the fact of the matter is the white house did call a writer on january 6th. that is extraordinary even though the call was only nine seconds and happened close to the end of the day, around 4:30 p.m. but the white house did reach out to rider. other elements of the book, it's not surprising roger stone was talking to the head of the proud boys before and after january 6th, it's not surprising that he was talking to the held of the oath keepers nine days after the capitol attack. but the fact he had such communication and such volume i think is indicative ha roger stone is not as innocent as some might think. >> ben, you have new reporting about an oath keeper charged in the january 6th insurrection and text messages she exchanged with andrew giuliani about the election in late 2020. that's of course the son of r

congressman adam schiff down played riggleman's comments yesterday when he was on cnn. here he is. >> one of the things that has given our committee credibility is we have been careful about what we say, not to overstate matters, understate matters. and without the advantage of the additional information we have gathered since he left the committee, it poses real risk to be suggesting things. >> so earlier this year, he and his two frnds pleaded guilty for demonstrating inside the capitol. they were sentenced to home confinement and probation. attorneys for all three men declined to comment to cnn for this story. prosecutors never mentioned this call during their court proceedings. kourgt multiple sources familiar with the investigation, he doesn't remember receiving the 9-second call and claim cans he doesn't know anyone who worked in the trump white house. so given what's known here, it's hard to say how significant a finding this is. >> do you think we're going to find out anymore about this? >> we'll just have to wait and see. the committee has the next hearing this

it was revealed by denver riggleman who worked on the committee staff. he said during the january 6th insurrection, someone connected by phone to a rioter in the crowd. there's a lot we do not know, who placed it, what kind of authority it held. what do we know about it? >> we know that the committee is kind of throwing cold water on this. both members who were on the sunday shows over the weekend making clear they were aware of this phone call. in the words of jamie raskin, this is one of thousands that the committee has uncovered. they are seeing riggleman left but they had a lot of work left at that april point. but since his departure, the committee has run down all the leagues and digested and analyzed all the information that arose from his work, which is to say they went down the rabbit hole. this is a committee that often doesn't bury the lead. in fact, they are people who very much know where the news is. they present that front forward. they drive toward every single one of their conclusions without very much subtlety in all of these hearings.

>> well it is no surprise that that line on the phone records caught former representative riggleman'scall from a white house phone number, out to one of the rioter who has been convicted of going into the capitol. there is a lot we don't know. who was on the white house end of that call. why was it placed, was it intentionally and what was discussed if anything during those nine seconds. but yes, the very fact that a phone call was placed from the white house switchboard to a rioter, to a person in the process of committing a federal crime, that is really important and something that the committee i'm sure will dig into and if they can't get to the bottom tv then doj will need to look at it. >> if this is a normal criminal trial, which it is not. you would call potential witnesses in and presumably they would show up and answer questions under oath. the questions you're asking there would require a trump or a stone to come and testify under oath and say this is what we talked about the day before january 6. this is why i had them in and presume some sort of obligation to show up and a

why would the committee want to put some distance between itself and riggleman?ink they probably think that he is suggesting conclusions that are not warranted by the evidence. it's very important that the committee have creditability. when i was a federal prosecutor and worked on high-profile case, i was always very careful. i knew if i overstated the evidence or if i misstated the evidence, that somebody in the defense would make a big point of that in the press. so i would always be very careful and measured about my comments and i think the january 6th committee is a mountain of evidence that they don't have to overstate anything. there's a lot here to take a look at. >> and ali, last question to you , we know the committee that be adept to presenting their evidence. they know who their audience is. they know how to get from point "a" to point "b." how could this factor at all into the hearing? >> reporter: look, there's potential that this could come up but it's not likely especially as the committee is trying to paint a picture continuing the storytelling.
