the transit center on rincon hill projects will shift the center of downtown south and provide new regionalonnections. an essential corridor will create a new center of activity. to the yoorth union square thrives, powell street, chinatown, and the feeder district are a few blocks away. to the west emerging technology hub around the historic furniture mart, new shopping mall, strand theater will transform that end of market street in the coming years. at the center of it all lies market street. all this change since the last design. this requires new creative thinking for how market street should be designed. it will always be the heart of our city, but new exciting opportunities exist to think about our public realm in a more expansive way and opportunities to begin building a more robust transit system that will better meet our goals of a transit first city. with that i'd like to introduce chris -- from dpw to present the new material. thanks very much. >> thank you, neil. president fopg, commissioners, thank you for having me here today, chris upbrick for the better market street project

in san francisco, on rincon hill and south market, under construction right now, we have a high-riseoncrete core buildings where the buildings are not made of steel columns, they're made of essentially a very highly reinforced concrete core, unusual designs that need to be carefully reviewed by the building departments. we have other types of buildings. in fact the building code says you're allowed to build out of any material, and we review it so you can make it out of egg cartons, if you can prove to us properly and annal little cli that the thing could work. of course you couldn't. >> concrete is actually a for example to the rebar. so -- a protection for the rebar. you don't need to put on fire proofing onto the concrete. if you make the concrete thick enough such that the concrete acts as the fire proofer. >> we were thinking about how we could get a window washer to come down, so we can show you. not on this building. when we see the window washing scaffolding thaings they hang off of. >> those are window washing davits. they have two motors. for that height, those guys are hoo

doesn't -- i believe that there are projects that have been approved by this board in the past, like rincon hill, like trinity plaza, that, you know, may have even more severe impacts, but on balance, the community benefits that were exacted in those projects balance and mitigate the impacts that the projects have on the city. so that's why i'm comfortable supporting this project. i'm also joined by three other progressive colleagues on the board, supervisors mar, cohen and kim, who i believe also share similar values and concerns about low income communities here in it san francisco. part of -- some of the -- what's being granted through this project is $11 million that is going towards affordable housing. currently, with dissolution of redevelopment, i do believe that we have very few resources for obtaining funding for affordable housing. and sadly, we rely on development to fund development. and in this instance, with $11 million hopefully we'll see senior housing, or -- and other affordable housing leveraged through the development of this project. in addition, as the carpenters and sheet m
