. >> air france flight 447, from rio de janeiro to paris disappears over the atlantic. >> reporter: it was a midair mystery. a plane that simply fell from the sky. but hundreds of hours of an abc news investigation reveals what probably happened aboard that doomed jet. it's three hours into the flight, heading from rio to paris. 228 people are onboard. it is cruising at 35,000 feet over the atlantic. when the captain makes a fateful decision. despite a thunderstorm looming ahead, he takes a scheduled break. just minutes later, the plane's tube, a piece of equipment that reads the air speed, suddenly failed, shutting off the plane's autopilot. control of the aircraft is suddenly in the hands of the youngest and least experience of the crew. and the captain is sitting where i'm sitting right now? bill box of the flight safety foundation joined us in a simulator to re-create what happened. he pulled the nose of the plane up? >> a fairly dramatic pitch up. >> reporter: it was precisely the wrong thing to do. it slowed air speed over the wings. flight 447 started falling out of the sky. as

. >> reporter: this was an air france flight from rio de janeiro.t officer onboard, a less experienced pilot after the captain had left the cockpit entirely to go and take a nap. according to reports, the plane's black boxes, later recovered in the atlantic ocean, show that the first officer became confused when a crucial piece of equipment on the plane stopped working. causing the plane's autopilot to disengage, and once that happened, the first officer made the fatal decision to pull up on the plane's nose, and that led the engines to stall. he began asking for the main pilot to return from his nap to the cockpit, but by the time he got there, it was too late. the flight crew never able to regain control of the airplane, and, of course, it went crashing into the water. french officials are getting set to issue their final report on this tragedy later on in the summer. these details on the black box recordings, though, is brand new. all 228 passengers and crew onboard air france flight 447 were killed. jon? jon: rick, just a quick clarification the
