cnn's will ripley is joining us now live. he's just outside the apartment in dusseldorf germany, where he was living. what do we know about this co-pilot, will? >> reporter: well we know from neighbors and from people who encountered him in this quiet neighborhood about 20 minutes from the town center that he by all accounts at least on the outside appeared to lead a normal life. his apartment continues to be an epicenter of police activity. just tonight we saw prosecutors and investigators bringing out more evidence after they brought out evidence earlier in the day, including those medical records that nic was talking about in his report. but tonight, within the last hour we also got a brand new piece of information from a pizza shop owner in this neighborhood who says that lubitz and a woman that he believes was his girlfriend were very frequent customers who were affectionate who were coming in all the time but then two months ago, it suddenly stopped. here's how he described their behavior. you saw andreas lubitz and who

will ripley has more on that. >> reporter: if what the german tabloid is reporting is indeed accurateand had is what transpired, what can be heard in the cockpit voice recording that was leaked to that newspaper, it is truly horrific for the families of everybody who was on board that plane because it indicates that they knew for at least eight minutes that something was terribly wrong, and they were helpless to do anything about it as the ground kept moving closer and the plane kept descending towards the alps. this all began before takeoff when the pilot, patrick sonden heimer told his co-pilot that he hadn't gone to the restroom in barcelona. that's a key point. it's not uncommon for the pilot and co-pilot to stay in the cockpit for such a quick trip. but lubitz encouraged his pilot to get up once they reached the cruising altitude. you can hear him say "okay, go ahead." and the pilot left the co-pilot in control, that's when it's believed he was locked out. air traffic radar detected the plane was starting to descend. and it was a noticeable descent to people on the plane, which i

will ripley spoke with an aviation psychologist who is trying to change the rules. >> reporter: most who knew him never knew the truth. germanwings' co-pilot andreas lubitz spent years hiding his mental illness until it was too late. >> 150 people died. >> reporter: dr. gerard franenbruch is a psychologist that helps pilots, flight crew, and their families. pilots struggling with mental illness can call the foundation anonymously. he cannot disclose whether lubitz sought help but is not surprised the 27-year-old was hiding his condition as officials suggested. >> pilots tend to hide these problems because they lose their job. >> reporter: in both the u.s. and europe, there are certain mental health conditions where a pilot would automatically be disqualified from flying. the doctor says in europe licenses are revoked immediately by civil aviation authorities. he says most pilots that he's worked with never fly again. >> not only have the problems that -- they have the mental illness, but they fear that they'll lose their job. a huge, huge difference. >> reporter: that creates incenti

will ripley joins me first from dusseldorf germany. how does this differ will from what lufthansa previously told the media? >> well we've seen so many leaks in this investigation. this is now the latest. apparently the search crews in the french alps recovered this s.i.m. card and they shared the contents of it with the french magazine and this german tabloid, which have -- they're the same tabloid, by the way, that did leak that cockpit voice recorder transcript. and it details what the transcript described, these terrifying final moments of the flight the noises the screaming, the chaos in the back of the cabin for these 149 people who were helpless. you could hear passengers screaming "oh, my god," as you mentioned. for anybody who's flown, you can listen to this description and you can imagine exactly what it was like on that plane. it plays into everybody's worst fears, and it plays really into the worst nightmares of the families for these people. you recall last week the prosecutor here said that, in fact passengers were unawar

>> will ripley thank you very much. i want to bring in our aviation correspondent david soucie and neuropsychiatrist dr. lawrence tucker. dr. tucker let me begin with you. your area of expertise is at the heart of this. lubitz's doctor says that his vision problems were psychosomatic. in other words, to oversimplify it it was in his head. it was a psychological problem as opposed to a physical one. how is that possible? >> well when you have an anxiety disorder like it sounds he had, ptsd multiple traumas, he was very anxious. so anxiety and depression can present itself in a psychosomatic way where you get overfocused with body sensations, everything from eyes vision bodily functions and even diarrhea and stomach issues. another thought is if he's very anxious and going through depression does he have a problem sleeping and dehydration? that can cause visual issues as well. >> it's incredible. literally, you can't see even though it's in your head it's not a real vision issue. i think it's incredible and hard for many

. >> will ripley gives us an update from laguardia. >> none and christine, throughout the overnight hours, work continuing here to move that delta flight off of the runway where it landed slid about 4,000 feet and ended just dangerously close to the icy water. delta 1086. we saw pictures coming in of two large cranes that were intending to lift the aircraft turn it around and bring it into a hangar. as the ntsb continues to investigate how this happened. passengers describe a really terrifying scenario as this plane from atlanta was coming in on thursday morning, around 11:00. shortly after 11:00. they say there was no traction. they felt a thud they were thrown and then the plane just kept sliding. again, 4,000 feet on a 7,000-foot runway. the nose crashed right through a fence and were it not for a berm that the plane became wedged on the plane could have actually slide into the water which would have been a very dangerous scenario. as it turned out, passengers were able to evacuate. there was a problem with some of the emergency chutes. they didn't deploy. firefighters climbed up on th

let's go to will ripley live in dusseldorf germany. what are you learning will? the german tabloid that put this out over the weekend. very upsetting information for the families of the people on board because it essentially details the final minutes of their lives. sadly, we learned that these final minutes included a lot of terror for people in the back of the plane. passengers were first heard screaming at 10:32 a.m. that was a full eight hours before -- sorry, eight minutes before the plane hit the french alps at 10:40 a.m. in between that time you could hear the captain who had been locked out, valiantly trying to break back into the cockpit. he was screaming through the door at lubitz who never responded and could be heard on the audio recording breathing as the plane went down closer and closer towards the mountains. to imagine if you had a mother or a spouse or a child on that plane and to think that for eight minutes they knew something was wrong, they saw the terrain getting closer very difficult for the families and infuriating for the investigators on
