cnn's will ripley was a handful of journalists to be granted access.e this morning from pyongyang. tell me what that must have been like. rare to get a look inside the showmanship and stage craft and political process in that country. what did you see? >> reporter: we have been pushing for access for last several days. the only updates we were getting were through state media. they put us on a bus and we thought it was a press conference. then a 90-minute security check and we were going somewhere else. secret service agents and workers congress party building and we walked in right as kim jong-un got the new title that was created for him going from first secretary to chairman. to stand in that cavernous auditorium with the 5,000 people who voted to support him. it gave us clues into what this system was like. out on the streets today, huge parade this morning and another parade happenng this evening. hundreds of thousands of people turned out beginning at 5:00 a.m. they are still at their day jobs today after performing in the huge group choreography

our will ripley is on the ground in pyongyang and has this report for us. >> given that north korea haseputation for one of the most secretive places in world, it's no surprise that this meeting was veiled in secrecy. a building that we are not allowed anywhere close to aside on the first day we took some pictures from across the street, we've been taken on sight seeing tours around the city while the work of the party has been happening behind closed doors. each evening around 10:00 at night, there's been a surprise news broadcast. an unannounced broadcast proclaiming to people what has happened at the congress. it's 30e7b8 minutes long. we're told the supreme leader gave a policy speech although they didn't say which policy he spoke about. he's continuing to hold very true to the policies of his late father and grandfather before him. then we heard from different officials from different sectors. it is really, although we don't get a whole lot of information, it certainly is a window into how things work here. the government tells the people what they need to do, what they need to thi

joining me now from hiroshima is will ripley. he's an international correspondent for cnn. welcome, will. what was the reaction in japan to this historic visit? >> hi, al. the majority of people here in hiroshima really welcomed president obama's visit. this is something city miserable and the mayor has been having for since the 1980s. they wrote letters to every single president since ronald reagan. the former hiroshima mayor met with president obama in 2010 at the white house when obama said he would be willing to come here and six years later the moment was finally realized. so the majority of people welcome the visit. there were a handful of protesters here, probably in the minority as far as public opinion goes. people with signs were saying the world need to do away with nuclear weapons which was the message of probst and a handful of sign saying they protested the president's visit in large part because some people here do feel the united states owes japan an apology. president obama, of course, didn't give an apology. it's a very sensitive situation geopolitically h

now, within the past hour, cnn's will ripley spoke to us live from pyongyang about the circumstances surrounding the reporter's expulsion. >> reporter: he actually wasn't here to cover the workers party congress specifically, but he was invited in with a group of nobel laureates who came here to have discussions with north korean officials and they made various stops touring around the country last week and over the weekend. they say that his reporting was disrespectful of the supreme leader kim jong-un. they also say he violated local customs and acted in an aggressive manner during different times during his trip. this is the accusation from north korea. i actually saw rupert yesterday at the hotel as we were shooting a report. he said he had been spoken to very harshly earlier by the north korean authorities about his reporting. he hcht been reporting for the past few days. we believe he was at the hotel, which is different from where we are. we're at a different hotel. that hotel was on an island separate from the rest of the city. anyway, he'd been there for the past few days, n
