let's bring in cnn's bill ripley live in pyongyang. good morning, will. some colorful language there from the north koreans. >> reporter:. they certainly don't mince their words. but look, this is pretty typical north korean fiery propaganda aimed at president trump. clearly, his more moderate tone in south korea did not diminish the fact that he really laid down a cutting attack on this country, the system and perhaps most importantly, he was speaking directly to this country's stream leader, kim jong-un and for the authorities there, that is just about as big of a sin as one can commit. but what we have yet to see is any sort of strong response from north korea as a result of this. you read that quote from the leading newspaper here where they mention that president trump gave a speech. no details about what was in the speech. they focused more that there were anti-president trump protests in seoul. they didn't mention pro-trump protesters as well. we went out in the streets and tell people what he said. they allowed us to give the full readout of the s

will ripley is in seoul, south korea and has been to north korea more than a dozen times.ean media is now reporting. >> this is a reliable source here, wolf. this is the news agency which is off in the first line hereof what we hear about the missile launches and they believe the missile has been launched from somewhere in north korea. this is all we know right now. there are lots of questions about the trajectory of the missile. north korea had waited more than two months before the last missile test in mid-september. you will recall that missile, the intermediate missile fired up over hokkaido. it was a busy month for the north koreans to have missile launches and a nuclear test happened all within the span of a month. then silence from pyongyang. in the past couple of days, we have been getting indications from sources in the u.s. as well as japan saying there have been preparations and radio chatter that there could be a ballistic launch imminent. here in seoul that, would mean it is 3:15 a.m. in pyongyang. we don't where the missile was launched from and was it added

the official told ripley that there are two steps to this goal, first the testing of the long range icbme hydrogen bomb test. so with today's launch, did they accomplish step number one. and how is the u.s. going to respond if they test a nuclear bomb? >> i think what they're saying is clearly they want to negotiate from a position of strength, and they've defined that as having the capability to marry up a nuclear warhead with a missile that can reach the united states. they have been on this path to achieve that capability for literally the past decade, and no country, no nation, no form of influence has been able to modify their behavior and to put them down a path that would arrest that or at least modify it in some way. so i think it's fair to say that our intelligence community can step up clearly within about the next few months and state with certainty they've got the missile that can strike anywhere. they've got the nuclear capability, and they've been able to miniaturize it, marry it, and can launch that thing. now, i would also suggest that that capability has been on a path t

i want to bring in now cnn's international correspondent will ripley.erican network correspondent in north korea's capitol. what's the reaction in north korea to the president's speech? >> hi, don. well, we spoke with north korean officials as the president was speaking and immediately after. we passed along what was said, and they reiterated some of the things they told me just about an hour before he spoke. they said we don't care ha that mad dog my utter, we've heard enough. so the north koreans essentially before the president even spoke were trying to downplay the significant of his words. the north koreans talked about the military build up in the pacific, those three aircraft carriers, the ballistic submarines and will president trump use that as an example of peace through strength the the north koreans say that the united states by assembling those military assets is pushing the situation in this part of the world closer to the brink of war. which is an argument that we've heard them make before, and there are going to be joint military exercis

want to bring in now cnn's senior white house correspondent jim acosta, who is in seoul and will ripley, in pyongyang, the only american network correspondent in north korea's capital. jim, you first. president trump arrived in south korea just a short time ago as tensions on the peninsula are high. what's the latest? >> well, right now, don, as you mentioned, he's ats camp humphreys. he's going to be receiving an operational briefing. they will be briefing the president on the situation in north korea. obviously that has been escalating in terms of these tensions between the u.s., president trump and north korean dictator kim jong-un. in that meeting right now in that operational briefing as it's called right now the chief of staff john kelly, national security adviser h.r. mcmaster, don, we do expect some brief remarks. we'll be waiting to hear what the president says. so far he hasn't said much. he's talking now and i think we can probably listen in for just a few moments, don. >> yeah. we're going to listen to the president. i'm sorry. >> the next nine days. as you know, we just got

will ripley has just spoking to a north korean official. he joins us now. what did the north korean official tell you? >> well, basically what jim said, that north korea hasn't proven they can bring a warhead back into the atmosphere. that's what north korea still feels they need to prove. this is the same official who told me back in october that north korea basically had to show the trump administration two things. one, they had an icbm, they showed that today. two, that they can detonate this device, which would be an above ground nuclear test like the kind that north korea's foreign minister threatened back in september, possibly over the pacific ocean. it could just be posturing. maybe we could see another underground nuclear test, but the sense i have gotten from repeated conversations with north korean officials is in order to round off their nuclear program, they need to conduct this type of above ground test that would be so alarming and so provocative to the rest of the world. they point to china which did it 40 years ago, the united states, russi

cnn will ripley joins us now live from pyongyang. what's the reaction, will?porter: well, we haven't heard an official reaction to the president's speech itself, but there was an article that was published today in north korea's leading newspaper that kind of sums up north korea's long standing retort to the united states when ever this human rights issue comes up, and it's an argument that's been thrown back at me when ever i asked north korean officials about human rights over the last several years. this article was published before the president's speech but the context is newsworthy given what the president said in seoul. i'll read you a portion of it. quote, the u.s. should not style itself as a human rights judge but mind itself own poor human rights records in its land where racial discrimination, gun-related crimes and all other social crimes prevail. the north koreans here in pyongyang will say that they do not believe their society is a hell. they say it's a collective society, a safe society for the majority of citizens and they say that the people
