cnn's will ripley is in south korea and he's been tracking the vice president's reaction. >> fred, wee spoke with reporters on air force two on his way back from south korea about this announcement that north korean leader kim jong-un has invited south korean president moon jae-in to visit north korea at the earliest possible date. the vice president telling reporters he does not think this potential summit dilutes what allies have been working so hard on, which is this maximum pressure campaign, sanctions, diplomatic isolation. vice president pence also making a point to say he doesn't think there is anything that is threatening the alliance between south korea and the united states, even though many observers believe north korea's intent here is to try to drive a wedge between washington and seoul. that was the apparent mission of the sister of the north korean leader, kim jong-un. he sent his younger sister kim yo-jong to south korea to deliver this invitation and what the united states called, conduct a charm offensive. she is certainly a younger tello genic face, considered charm

cnn's many ripley live in seoul with the latest. what do we know about this, will?> reporter: well, john, ivanka's face has been plastered everywhere in south korea. she is at the blue house having a meal with moon jae-in. they are five minutes from where i am. the u.s. still doesn't have an ambassador here in south korea. president moon gave president trump a lot of credit for the resumption of interkorean talks. he said president trump has been asking about the ticket sales at the olympics which have been pretty good, not entirely meeting expectations. also releasing new pictures overnight of a photo that president trump signed for president moon jae-in wishing good luxe at the olympics saying we will win, mr. president. but of course there is a controversy here as well. north korea is sending former spy master, the man widely believed to have orchestrated an attack in 2010 on a south korean naval ship that killed 46 south korean sailors. now he will be coming to south korea, presumably sitting in the same vip box with the south korean president and eye kapbg qaa

joining me now live, will ripley. we learning about ivanka's stop in south korea and her involvement in amping up the pressure on north korea? >> well, you know, ryan, more nan a year into the trump presidency, there's still no u.s. ambassador to south korea. ivanka came with two missions, one, the photo ops we saw, smiling, waving, taking pictures, cheering on u.s. athletes. but the more important role was the back channel discussions all the way to the top of south korea's leadership where she laid out president trump's north korea strategy and talked about the new sanctions where they're trying to isolate north korea further economically by cutting off all of the ships that the u.s. says they have been using to conduct illicit transfers of raw materials out at sea, out away from the eyes of spy planes and what not so north korea can sell the materials to countries like china and russia, which obviously are not affected by the current sanctions. so the u.s. treasury is trying to crack down on that. ivanka trump layi
