. >> now, both of these men have been in jail at santa rita for more than two years. they were both arrested in the summer of 2017, about six months after the fire that killed 36 people at the ghost ship. there was a lot of talk during the trial about the city's potential responsibility in all of this. and in fact, this morning, as late as this morning, the last testimony the jury heard, they wanted read back to them was from an oakland fire captain about his visit to the ghost ship in 2014. his concerns about the fire load there and then in his testimony, he was asked if derick almena told him if anyone lived there and the fire captain said he was told by almena that no one did. that was the last testimony the jury heard. we thought they went out on the lunch break and then we heard within minutes of that, that they had reached a verdict. joining me now, leslie brinkley, my colleague. both of us have been here pretty much from the beginning. this trial started with jury selection in late april. >> i think the first day of testimony was april 30th. it's been running t

took her first job, a happier stint at santa rita jail, where she guarded inmates, whose stories reminded her of her mothers. >> my mom struggled with addiction when we were younger. my mom was able to lift her self up. she went on to get a phd from syracuse. >> reporter: it was her mother's story who inspired her own rise from an officer patrolling to a sergeant in 2014. in four years flat, she was promoted from the tenant to captain. >> i stood on some strong shoulders to get here. >>reporter: weeks from retirement, she is mentoring other women. she says she is encouraged to see that the top cops in oakland, richmond and fremont are women. should there be more? >> there should always be progress in law enforcement we need to accelerate the progress . >> is a happening fast enough? >> it is a steady. i do not want to say it is happening fast enough but the achievement for those ladies is amazing. >> reporter: she hopes their story on hers will encourage others . >> i am proud of what i have accomplished. i hope that i have been a role model for other women. >>> bully have things changed.
