brian: don ritchie? mr. ritchie: going back to the nixon impeachment, i did a oral history with floyd riddick, the senate parliamentarian, who was there during the nixon situation. in the interview, he told me he planned for how the senate would hold a trial for richard nixon. one of the things they were going to do was bring a tv to the chamber, because you can't have the impeachment of a president without the people being able to walk, so they had to change -- watch, so they have the rules ready to go for this occasion. then of course, president nixon resigned. when i did that oral history, i thought, this is counterfactual, a history about something that didn't happen in the past. interesting, but not that important. of course, in 1999 when the senate was good and ready to hold a trial for a president, everyone was going back and reading the interview about how they were going to modernize the 1868 impeachment rules to get ready for a 20th century impeachment. so you never know when a historical document

southeast asia economics reporter joins us, competing against the asia metals and mining reporter martin ritchier best against each other. you can play along at home on the bloomberg. let's kick things off. what i charted here are two sub indexes of producer surveys out of the u.s. and china. on the u.s. side, the isn new exports gauge, and on its counterpart from china. these are the monthly surveys of producers and how they feel about the export picture. we see that over the longer-term that they tracked decently, but over the past two years chinese and the u.s. down gradual recovery caused it to divert. in 2018, i amar watching how they have both turned down, and especially last month as each country applied tariffs on $34 billion worth of ingoods, and they saw a sharp decline. next week we have august figures for both of the index figures. i will be watching whether we see some of the trade war chatter fall into this. i tend to not overplayed the sentiment indexes, but i like the hard data to speak for itself, but clearly here if these both continue to turn down there will be in crest -- inc
