river valley to shepherdstown itself. civilians quickly tried to clamor to get in the highest wonders of their homes, to look out in the distance and learn whatever they possibly might be able to. about what was happening. this is a view on the right here, you can see from the area of the rosy monument today in the furthest mountain range you can see in the distance is the south mountain range and they were able to see battle smoke rising from south mountain and they could hear all of this, as one civilian put it, they are drawn to watching this battle at a distance all day long and night fell, the sounds of gunfire stopped and civilians were left to wonder what happened. as one civilian wrote that night, we knew almost nothing except that there was fighting, that it must be very heavy and that our friends were surely in it somewhere. things fell quiet again. on september 15th for the civilians are shepherdstown. it wasn't until later on that day when signs of trouble now began to show up literally at their doorsteps. fol

but here's that atmospheric river lining up to hit the bay area. so we start to see rainfall here wednesday morning. and that would stay with us here through wednesday night. but there's a lot more we're going to be tracking with this besides just rain chances on wednesday. i don't want to string you along on this. i want to make sure you are prepared. we get out ahead of this early, and you can see with that atmospheric river, it's going to hang out from wednesday all the way into saturday's forecast. i do think we're going to see some isolated flooding, especially in the north bay. that's where we're going to get hit the hardest. the mountains in the north bay, 3 to 5in of rain, maybe even a little more, but it's going to hit the bay area completely differently. some parts are going to get in on the high totals, other spots a lot less in the way of rainfall and heavy sierra snow of 1 to 3ft. we're going to take full looks at that bay area rain total. we'll show you exactly how much we're going to get each and every day to get you prepared. and mo

coming is with atmospheric rivers. they can stall out and it's the amount of water that they can transport that can create all of the potential issues for flooding. so much so that about 25 to 50% of california's annual rain season actually comes from atmospheric rivers. but of course, that can then mean, of course, major flooding. think about 7 to 15 times the flow of the mississippi river for some of the strongest atmospheric rivers, and that is equal to about 10.5 trillion gallons a day of just rain. wow. and i know, i know you, and i know you're always looking at the climate connection. so is there one? what is it? you know, scientists have been looking at research, referring to, you know, how the warming of the ocean and the warming of the atmosphere impacts us. and one thing we have seen play out is that because of the climate connection, there could be more of an intensity with atmospheric rivers. also, the el nino and la nina pattern also play a key role in the way that atmospheric rivers will act. you know, on

this is the eel river here behind me. this river is in a flood watch beginning tomorrow afternoon. because it's already up about three feet. forecasters are expecting this river is going to come up about another 20ft by friday afternoon. but it's tomorrow afternoon where they're really expecting the brunt of the rain, a high wind watch, a flood watch in effect for the entire northern california coast, also beginning tomorrow afternoon. and when you have that combination of a lot of rain, especially. hour after hour of rain, and then you add winds on top of it, potentially 40, 50, maybe even 60 mile an hour wind gusts. that's a bad combination. that's going to bring down trees. it could trigger landslides here in northern california. so that's why, you know, officials are saying, listen, you need to stay home tomorrow, stay off the roads. because this storm, the next round of the storm, i should say, is likely going to be much worse than the first. audrey. yeah, definitely. make sure to stay safe. chase, we've been hearing the term bombogenesis coming with this storm. what exactly d

i also checked some of the creeks and rivers, the napa river, which runs through the heart of the napaley, dark in deep and fast and muggy. but from what i could tell, it appeared to be staying within its banks. so that's good news. all those kyla mentioned there's still that flood advisories and warnings in the area until early saturday morning. some low lying areas could flood some puddles out on the roadway. keep an eye out for those. if you're driving around. as you mentioned, i went up to snow valley road, which is in kind of the far northeast corner of napa county. and there were some rocks and debris that broken felt free from the hillsides and rolled into the roadway. you know, th se hills have been dry for months. suddenly they're soaked with moisture becomes money. and a lot of big rocks to break free and fall down. so if you're headed out into some of the rural areas here in napa county, just aware that that could be a danger. otherwise, just take it slow out there because it is raining hard as the very latest here in the north bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. all right,

this is another atmospheric river, on the northern fringe of it. the bulk of that moisture is directed to the central coast where they'll face greater flooding potential through the rest of tonight. this atmospheric river is not nearly as strong as the one that inundated the north bay last week. let's look at the rainfall totals we've been adding up over the past six days or so. over 22 1/2 inches of rain in sonoma county, over 13 inches for santa rosa, san rafael over 10 1/2, over 8 for ben lomond, santa cruz mountains picking up another half inch tonight, over 4 inches for san francisco and a few off-and-on showers are possible through at least the first half of the day tomorrow, but conditions are going to improve around the bay area, around most of california. any local travel looks good except if you're heading up to south lake tahoe, winter storm warning continues until 4:00 a.m. wednesday. wait until the day before thanksgiving if you're heading to do some skiing. nationally, new york is a trouble spot. the northeastern u.s. might get a nor'

those are some of our rivers and that is the russian river at hoplin that there is some concern that it is going to rise to the level of the banks or maybe over at a little bit and start to get into the flooding and also the navarro river back in this direction. same story so, you know, remember when these rivers and streams take on water, they kind of keep rising even after the event is over. and we're not even really halfway done with this. so i was looking and, you know, sanders got over 7 inches of rain and that made it the wettest day in the last 120 year, 7 inches of rain in 24 hours. so it's an extreme situation as we go through the evening. you're going to see that the system will lift a little bit to the north and that will slack off a little bit for you in the north bay. but then tomorrow here comes this front and it is going to roll through with heavy showers and it is going to go right through the bay area. so not just the north bay. we still have a lot more to come with this system. this is tonight, but look at what happens tomorrow. these are the totals were looking out
