it is not the dnc and rnc. it is something that is more empowering of individuals. people have better information. they don't rely on "the new york times" anymore. i know tea party moms in florida who have larger facebook pages than the local gop. think about the marginal cost of organizing and how that changes everything. i would also argue that those values are not far right. a lot of tea party years -- tea thaters are in growing class of independents that are fed up with party ship on both sides. >> you can say it is not a two-party system anymore, and that might be your future for the future, but it is a t -- it is a two-party system. democrats.rned by after the next election, we will be governed by democrats or republicans. ideological groups like the tea party, if they want to have an influence in governing, they will adhere themselves to one of those two parties. we will be governed by one of those two parties. if the tea party were to form a party of its own, it would be marginalized. it might get more support than the green party or the american socialist w

joining me now are msnbc political analyst and former rnc chair michael steele, always a pleasure tou on. >> nice to see you. >> and lisa bloom, "today" show analyst and author of "suspicion nation", the trayvon martin injustice and why we continue to repeat it. lisa, i cannot even wrap my mind around the scope of the stats and how early this discrimination appears to start. what do you attribute that to? >> this is a department of education study of all 97,000 public schools in america. so it's a very broad study and not by some radical outside group. listen, i have a chapter about this in my book as well. to me this is the primary reason why there's still so much racial equality in america. at the beginning, in schools there's so much racial inequality. most americans go to segregated schools and kids in majority black schools get less funding than kids who go to majority white schools. kids in black schools less likely to have teachers who are competent or proefficient. the schools are crumbling and toxic, toilets don't work. the list goes on and on. we cannot claim to be a legalt

just this past week, the rnc hosted the national news and publishers association at our head quarters black press, and that is in our community, and so we are having conversations in key stakeholders in the community, and that is working. >> prinls priebus said getting 20% of the african-american votes would be essential if you come up with the right vote. and mitt romney got 27% of the black vote in 2012, and are you talk abwho you have on hand to get more than the 7% and get up to the 20%? >> well, we have a number of republicans out there who are, who are addressing the community's concerns. that is most important. now, at the end of the day, the candidates do matter, but what we are doing at the rnc is to build out the infrastructure to give these candidates the resources and the tools available to be most successful so that is what we are focused on the ground game. there are candidates out there, and the republicans out there who are talking about the issues that matter in the community, and whether it is tim scott and the opportunity agenda, and focuses on the jobs training pro

support which were talking about in the last segment what you think about the effort overall by the rncand the progress so far? >> guest: they have made some progress. had a very long way to go. they had some seriously weaknesses with kids and particularly melendez, women and minorities and is going to take a long time to overcome. >> host: let's break down the three dimension to millennials to which what's the issue? >> guest: millennials them are probably many issues about the republican party but what was interesting in a new research bold was half of them called themselves independents. i think republicans have an opportunity with a group that they may not have had in the past. they certainly voted for barackk obama twice. they are more democratic than republican of them in a group of independent but at the same time i think there's an opportunity for the gop. >> host: how to capitalize best of what's the best message to send specifically to millennials? >> guest: for the 2014th elections that are dissatisfied with president obama and there's a lot of dissatisfaction with obamacare.

angela, molly, michael steele and former rnc chairman. angela, what was your story? brother's keeper. there's funding behind this initiative to address the plight of young boys in this country. >> it was very unusual to hear the president talk about it in very personal terms. i felt that we heard and saw a side of president obama that we don't see ever. very rarely do you hear the president speak the way he did on thursday. it's going to be interesting to see where we are 18 months, 20 months from now with regard to that initiative. >> absolutely. it's five years. let's all get involved and try to make a difference. it's so important. >> mine was a story by zeke miller in "time" magazine. for a president who was quoted "i don't think america's elections should be bankrupt by america's most powerful interests," that's exactly what the president is doing now as they realize they have to catch with the republicans in the super pac game. i won't use the term hypocrisy, but i will say evolving has been very interesting to watch over this presidential cycle and election cy

rnc chair reince priebus and governor scott walker have waged an all-out assault on voting, voter purgingnd voter suppression and that was before they took charge of the state legislature. now we've seen an unconstitutional voter i.d. bill and seen efforts to throw out legal ballots because of minor clerical errors and we've seen an attempt to restrict access to the ballot box for legal voters. now they are going off the cliff. they want to restrict early voting in a way that's never happened before, including, as you mentioned, ending weekend voting. we need more access to the ballot box, not less. >> and how much of this is specifically about governor walker's re-election, one of the tea party governors elected in the big sweep in 2010 and who now is going to have a harder time, if democrats are really focused? how much do you think this is really specifically about his campaign? >> well, i think it's a huge part of that. you know, we know that if, you know, if it's a fair fight, governor walker's party does tend not to win. wisconsin hasn't gone for a republican presidential candidate
