and two of those words were donations and rnc for republican national committee. now, obviously as you said, it would be illegal for any russian to contribute to an american election. it would be illegal for an american political party to accept foreign donations. so congressional investigators want to get to the bottom of whether there was any discussion at all at this meeting about donations. now, there are other possibilities, though, because the stated subject of the meeting was these magnitsky act sanctions. they had a story to tell about some particular americans who she said pulled money out of russia and some of them may have contribute to hillary clinton's campaign. that was the allegedly incriminating information from her point of view that she was bringing to the trump team. so in that sense there were donations discussed according to her to hillary clinton. ask it's possible that manafort was talking about that and he inadvertently put rnc. being generous here. but the bottom line is we don't know and investigators don't know and we want to find out. >

the rnc answers to the president.hairman is in that job because the president put her in that job. this is someone who knows exactly where the president has been on these things. what we heard, if anything, recently was him coming out and going back to his home turf and what is comfortable with him. so i don't think she can possibly be surprised by this and i don't think she has much of a choice where she pegged herself in. with regard to the rest of the party, i would like to see more people calling him out by name, but fundamentally, i think the republican party reached a juncture now where they need to focus on progressing their agenda in congress. he has an r after his name, but he is not what republican party stands for and i think they have to work on progressing their agenda. whatever, he is on his own. that's how it needs to be from here on out. >> is this the party of lincoln? >> i think in some places it is, but in other places, this is an extremely fractured party and there are some people that have evolved

joining me now is new rnc spokesperson caylee mckenney. now, i know steve bannon personally, i think he's a fantastic strategist and was very helpful as an adviser to the president during the general election and then in the white house. but apparently, he just became too much of a distraction? was that what you're hearing? >> look, you know, i can't speak to the inner workings of the white house, but what i will say is we value his crick, we value his time. anyone who serves, we value that. he's out, he was a valuable contributor. he did have a solid point of view that was important in the white house, but it's one that our president has, these views on trade, on immigration. he echoed the president who has put this forward from the the very beginning, for decades actually. jesse: right, steve bannon did not elect the president, he was a good adviser. at the same time, i mean, steve bannon very aggressively pushed american nationalism, american economic independence when it came to china, when it came to trade, when it came to energy. and

when democrats took over the house in 2006, michael, the rnc outspent the dnc by over two to one. so the reality is they have a lot of well heeled donors because their primary funding base is folks who want to repeal the affordable care act so they can get a big tax cut. our donor base is different. they're people across the economic spectrum. i'm very confident that we are going to be able to compete everywhere. we've seen already progress in special elections that we're investing in at a state level, whether it was iowa earlier last week, whether it was new hampshire a couple of weeks ago. state races where donald trump did really well in these districts and democrats won. oklahoma, five, six weeks ago, two special elections in trump country, democrats won. virginia and new jersey this year. we are working hard there. the dnc is all in. and those are two races where i think democratic governors have a real shot. this is what it's all about. winning elections, leading with our values and continuing the momentum. >> you referenced the affordable care act. you know the tradition am

you can look to the rnc as evidence by this, chris. the rnc has raised twice as much money as barack obama did in the first six months that he was in the white house, and these are small dollar contributions coming in. usually republicans don't get small dollar contributions, you get a little bigger contributions, but it's interesting to see how excited the small dollar contributor is to donald trump, but with regard to wage growth, i think that's important. you have to see people's lives get better. i did a roundtable in hudson, part of my district, and unemployment is down at 3.1%. wage growth is incredible. people are making with no skill anywhere from, you know, $12 to $16 an hour, because there's so much competitive -- so much competition for this labor force amongst a group of people who can't find people to come in and fill the jobs in their businesses. so what's happening in my district i think is going to start happening around the country, as labor tightens, wages are going to rise. >> as labor tightens, wages are going to ri

i have been covering the rnc since priebus became the chairman in 2011. and if you remember at that time, the party was really in the dumps. they were badly divided. they won a mid-term election but they were deep in debt and the donor and activist community was dissatisfied. he came in and said he was going to turn this thing around and the republicans could win without sacrificing their principles. he pointed to his home state where scott walker and paul ryan were doing just that. and the party put its trust in him. now i think you know, the case he makes is that he was successful because the party did win. the number of republicans in the white house, the house, the senate and state legislature, state houses across the country is the highest it's been since 1928. you can look at what came after 1928 and say that didn't work out so well for the republican party but the case he makes is he did his job which was to win. and the question that a lot of his critics would ask is was it worth it? if you believe in conservative principles, did he sacrifice too
