. >>> joined now by michael steele, former rnc chairman and msnbc political analyst. also joining me, former democratic congresswoman donna edwards. she represented the state of maryland. we're going heavy on maryland right here. michael steele, start with you on the point that paul just raised. it is an interesting one. we talk about these red state democrats who were with trump on the gorsuch nomination. but if a republican -- if collins, if murkowski -- if both of them end up saying, you know what? this nominee, the stakes here, it's too far, too much, i'm not there, does that have a ripple effect on those red state democrats and give them cover? >> it potentially could. when you are particularly looking at someone like joe manchin in west virginia. i still contend that joe manchin is in a better position than all of the other democrats who are on the bubble simply because he was a very popular governor in that state. the people know him. yes, numbers look one way today, but when you go in that voting booth, i think he knows he's got a little cover with the people.

i know you worked for the rnc for a long time and you may see differently. people say to themselves, i like having a job and i like that i have visible evidence of a tax cut. i like that we may have diminish the threat of nuclear war from the korean peninsula. i like that what was once considered a few months ago to be the most of unstable place on the planet might see peace and prosperity, and sometimes even if people don't like the president's actions, even if they were put off by how he behaved at the g-7. this tend to resonate with independent voters. what do you think? >> you are absolutely right. elections come down to security. national security and economic sety. whether people feel safe and whether they feel like the economy is strong and their well-being is sound is what all that matte going into the election. thconomy is humming along. people are finding work. their wages are growing. the economy continues to move forward in almost every major indices. as far as safety goes, they look at the threats around the world. whether it's isis on the run o
