she ended up winning the position again as head of the rnc, but a third of the rnc's members voted against her. now, mcdaniel is clearly worried about the same thing happening in the republican primary, the splintering of a party that is only very loosely held together and mostly by president trump. today, the washington post reported that, next wednesday, an internal rnc committee is scheduled to meet to lay down its rules for the 2024 presidential republican primary debates. and they intend to require candidates to sign a pledge, stating that they will support whoever the eventual nominee is or the rnc won't let them debate. like tucker carlson or fox news executives, it seems the rnc is worried that if they lose trump, the republican party could get its news next, a third party. and that might mean, the whole thing could fall apart. joining us now is michael scherer, a reporter for the washington post, who is the lead reporter on this piece tonight. it's good to see you, my friend. -- >> thank you very much for having me. >> what is the likelihood that ronna mcdaniel can get this done?

stuart: newly reelected chair of the rnc, ronna mcdaniel, joins me now. good to see you.s the beginning of a fight, trump/desantis. how do you unify the party? >> we will see some of this as the season unfolds and we get the field set for the presidential. the best way to unite the parties look at what president biden and the democrats are doing when you look at the open border, deficit spending and things that are coming out of the pandemic and deficits our kids are facing. the end of the day we will come together around our nominee and defeat president biden. there will be a little back and forth, we will get over it. stuart: you have just been reelected, your fourth form term, what is your priority starting right now? >> infrastructure. so many things, voter registration continuing to engage minority communities taken for granted by the democratic party, making sure we get election integrity up and running but ultimately we will have a debate coming up in july, our primary starting. we have to get together as a party at recognize we unify the nominee to defeat the demo

joining us now is former rnc chairman reince priebus. we welcome -- thank you for joining us. we have 2 announced candidates so far, how big do you expect the field to get on the republican side. >> thanks for having me trey, i think we'll have 6 or 7 candidates that start testing the waters, how many of those people actually get in, it hard to tell, i'm sure some are campaigning for cabinet posts or vp spots, but to your point, nikki haley getting in now is smart, smart to get in early, what matters most in these primaries are a couple things. number one i would say delegates matter, early states matter, and the debates matter. and getting in early helps the candidates get into the debates, that is one issue that they need to face. the other thing, the delegates people need to be reminded. the delegates choose the candidates, if you don't have a campaign on th ground in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, learning the rules, knowing how delicates are chosen and making sure you capture those delegates before the republican convention, you can't win, a case in point in 2012, r
