after that is when they got this call from trump and rnc chair ronna mcdaniel urging them not to sign certification. in that phone call, according to the detroit news, trump did apparently say how can anyone sign something when you have more votes than people? his statement was false. it was alluding to some claims that the vote count in detroit was rigged, it was not. and, you know, the emergence of this audio is really important because efforts to prevent certification in michigan, they are all part of special counsel jack smith's case right here in d.c. so this recording, this audio, if it's released, or if jack smith and his team get their hands on it, it really could be part of the case in this election subversion case out of d.c., the federal case, sara? >> and certainly, because there are so many people that are involved in that case, this doesn't just implicate donald trump, has there been a response from ronna mcdaniel, the head of the rnc? >> yeah, head of rnc, also calls michigan home, and, you know, according to the detroit news, mcdaniel said on the call, apparently urgin

that lawsuit was against president trump and the rnc, charging they were in the conspiracy together. it is not only consistent with what happened in georgia, but consistent with the beliefs that the rnc was involved. consistent with what else troubles doing in detroit and with michigan officials at that time. you may remember the leader of the senate and the speaker of the house flew to washington, d.c. and state of the trouble tell and went to visit with mr. trump. they were seen drinking champagne right after the election. he was laying on a pressure campaign on detroit officials. we should remember that was happening around the same time as this phone call. i do not find it a stretch to believe the words of this phone call reportedly being true. i think it puts additional pressure on this entire situation, including section 3. it is becoming unequivocally clear mr. trump engaged in these activities. >> before we let you go, harvard president clotting -- claudin gay if they think more pressure. students longfellow there is a double standard for what they can get away with and what

joining me now, msnbc political analyst fernando munday, and bsc and former rnc chair armand steele, former u.s. attorney, christopher matty. it's good to see you all. christopher, let's start with you, this call between trump and election canvassers, how does this potentially play into jack smith's investigation? >>> it's just another example of what we know donald trump was doing all over the country especially in georgia where we already heard that recording. so i suspect that jack smith was already aware of the call, may have the recording, probably has put participants in that call in front of the grand jury and i expect the evidence will be part of the trial. the whole charge here of conspiracy is really vast in scope effort over many months to overturn the election. and when you have someone repeatedly asking people to violate the law by taking action in service of donald trump rather than the service of their obligations, that's pretty compelling evidence. so it's just one more piece of evidence for jack smith to present to the jury. >> michael, there is another piece of this

the detroit news said the chairman of the rnc tells them, quote, if you can go home tonight, do not signe will get you attorneys. unquote. to which trump then says, quote, we will take care of that. well, that is something. someone who is under multiple counts of conspiracy to defraud the united states and its voters of the rightful outcome of the 2020 election. now, don't forget that this was a tight race in michigan. biden winning by the skin of his teeth, some would say. it is the latest piece of information that we're getting of many, of a fire hose worth of details of trump was actually doing to stay in power. now, it makes you wonder what else is out there that we're learning about this late december 2023. special counsel jack smith, i wonder, does he have something else up his sleeve? will we learn more information outside of these indictments? because right now smith is fighting, and i mean fighting, for the supreme court to decide whether trump has presidential immunity when it comes to the charges relate it january 6th. he is telling the court, quote, the charges are of the utm

we're basing it on the reporting between these two local officials and the rnc. marshall cohen, stay with us. i want to bring in the atlantic reporter george conway. this gets at the heart of the case jack smith is building that he actively conspired to overturn the 2020 election. how big of a deal is this? help us put this into context. >> well, it's thoroughly consistent with the criminal conspiracies that have been alleged by the department of justice by jack smith in washington, d.c. federal case and by fani willis in the georgia fulton county prosecution. and it's very much reminiscent of the phone call that you mentioned that had -- where president trump attempted to coerce and bully secretary of state in georgia raffensperger to stop his -- to interfere with his duties in certifying an election. and the same thing here. i mean, there is no factual basis given for the claim there was fraud, and there was intimidation involved. and according to the detroit news article it's suggested by a former elections official there that in essence what was happening her

during the phone call, which included rnc chair woman, ronna mcdaniel. trump reportedly told monica paer and william hartman they would look terrible, quote, if they signed the certification because in an earlier canvassing meeting, paul and hartman originally voted against approving the county's results, before switching to the words of support through the same meeting. following the meeting and the call with trump, palmer and hartman tried to rescind their votes in favor of certification saying that they were pressured to do so. the detroit news reached out to spokespeople for the former president. mcdaniel and canvas are monica palmer disputed the call. the other candidate, palmer, died in 2021. it sounds similar to georgia, you have to find me those votes. who knows what impact this will have, but there is this reporting that election officials were under pressure to switch the election in favor of donald trump? >> michigan, like georgia, a battle ground state again. next year. and bond, we've known for a while, donald trump purposely got involved wi

also on the recording, republican national committee chairwoman rana mcdaniel told the officials the rnc would provide attorneys if they did not certify biden's victory in michigan, to which trump replied, quote, we'll take care of that. that pressure campaign almost worked. the two county officials unsuccessfully tried to withdraw their earlier votes certifying the results. joining me now is michigan secretary of state jocelyn benson. secretary benson, pardon the long windup there, but it's been a long and winding road. and a lot of this sounds very familiar. trump allegedly tried to pressure georgia's secretary of state to interfere in that state's election. how did these pieces fit together in your view? >> well, thanks for having me. it really underscores the vast conspiracy for lack of better word that was at play. a coordinated effort in all the battleground states to delay certification, create enough confusion about the validity of the election results. because if you have people block or refuse certify, that gives you another reason or him another reason to say see, there's some
