roanoke, cape fear and a huge concentration of 330,000 slaves in north carolina in 1860 were right here in the cape fear river valley. there is a fear of her uprising. there was a terrible nightmare of the landed white gentry. they had very repressive laws against both free blacks and slaves. when general sherman came and invaded north carolina from the south he liberated some 25000 enslaved blacks with the army. he gutted the head of navigation with cape fear. he put all those people on votes and mule trains and brought them to wilmington where they were then processed to the freedmen's bureau. many stayed here and in a 1998 wilmington was one of the largest cities in north on a period of the 17,000 or so citizens, two thirds of them were black. they had achieved an amazing thing in just a generation after being enslaved. they had achieved the status of the middle class, they had achieved political leadership and power, they had had achieved social standing and economic wealth to a large degree. it got the reputation of a great place to come if you are black. african americans were ski

so we have winter storm warnings from maine all the way down to roanoke, even areas around cleveland. 121 million people affected by this winter storm. that's like half the population of the country. and there are now blizzards warnings for areas of new york city, long island, all of southern connecticut. so here's the snowfall map, this is the snow we're dealing with this morning, the one to three inches from chicago to detroit to columbus to indianapolis. and then we get into the bigger stuff as we go throughout the evening. the areas of pink, that's a foot of snow. that covers almost just north of d.c., just outside of philly, all of new york and all of new england for the most part, except for areas south of boston and south of providence. and then when we talk about the snow predictions, it's a steep gradient. d.c., four to eight inches. south of there, a lot less. north of there, you're dumped on, six to ten. philly, 8 to 12. coastal new jersey, zero. the mountains to the north, you're getting a lot more. new york city, 12 to 16 inches. 16 to 20 in hartford. 18 to 12, hudson val

to the north it is chilly, south it's mild. 58 in pittsburgh, 5 # in charleston, 57 in roanoke, 58 inichmond. this is the air mass heading this way monday and tuesday. radars looks like, a couple of showers, steady to heavy across the appalachian mountains and the northern portions of the ohio valley. we're not seeing severe weather or downpours or anything like that. this slides through overnight tonight and sets up a dreary start to your monday. clouds break and maybe peeks of sunshine by monday afternoon. today we're locked in pretty good, drizzle or scattered showers, otherwise it's cloudy and breezy and chilly. it continues through the evening hours. overnight tonight, cloudy and chilly and damp occasional shower or drizzle. tomorrow morning, it's the same thing, stagnant pattern here. this will persist tomorrow morning. after lunch, things open up somewhat, an isolated shower or two develops in the afternoon, tuesday we do it all over again. as we look at temperatures, chilly today on the cooler side of the front. tomorrow the front lifts to the north and the winds shift out of

when the administration issued the initial executive orders, i was in roanoke virginia are from international airports and far from worrying about this issue doing events about the affordable care act. i had somebody come up to me at a recession and said my family y helped a syrian refugee family resettle working with catholic charities a year ago. let me tell you how great they are doing. the husband is working on a construction crew and everybody loves him. they are all of different political persuasions to buy soccer shoes for the kids at christmas and you can't say anything bad about this guy, the family has been a credit to the community. but they were asking me we have a second family of arriving at the airport in four days. they've been at a camp in jordan for four years getting vetted and finally approved into the united states. what's going to happen to them and they haven't been able to come to the united states. the notion that this administration is perpetrating that refugees are enemies is just absolutely contrary to the values of this country. i second the comments made that the
