rob marciano tracking things in the weather center in atlanta. o we know, rob, the best estimates. >>> day three -- things get sketchy. the variance gets a lot larger. the confidence factor, once you get past day three is always a little shotty. a lot more on friday. but right now, we can't rule things out as far as it getting close enough to the u.s. to have some sort of impact. we'll do that. a direct strike. that's yet to be seen. right now, that possibility is getting a little less likely. tell you this, getting to a cat-4 in this big of a hurry is a little unexpected. these things can do things that you don't expect. 20 to 30 nautical mile wide eye. you can see it northwesterly at 16. winds at 135. a decent category 4 expected to remain that way. drop down to a cat-3 here a little bit as you get to more unfavorable environment. the act between the carolinas and bermuda. the category 3 or 4. and notice eastern new england does get close to the code of uncertainty past day three and four. so that is our concern here is that that ship in the pat

every friday, rob marciano hits the road for what we call "rob's road show."a, the yard sail in tennessee and today, it's bowling green, ohio in the national tractor pull championships. hey, rod. >> a little slice of americana, john, kiran. we are in the heartland in the buckeye state. able to have some fun on this friday. thankfully hurricane bill looks like it will miss the u.s. if you're hitting to the beaches, be careful. rip currents and big waves are going to be an issue. if you're heading inland, maybe to a tractor pull. this is what they're pulling. a pretty elaborate setup. they can put several thousand -- 40,000 -- 80,000 pounds of weight on here and some of these tractors will be -- well, pulling it across the dirt good old fashioned style. you can imagine the kind of horsepower these puppies garner. it certainly makes some noise. listen to this. that is just one of five engines, five engines, each of which takes five gallons to run 300 feet. that's not a lot of good mileage to the gallon. here's one of those in the five engine division. this sucker

speaking to rob marciano tracking weather in the area. somewhere around jamaica, coast of cuba, guantanamo bay when it hit turbulence. what was going on at that time? >> they had a flairup. you may remember during air france we talked about this intertropical turbulence zone. that would be around this area, northern south america. the caribbean for the most part clear. again, as you mention, right around jamaica there was a flairup of thunderstorms there. north of there into the gulf we didn't see much of anything. as far as what the national weather service puts out for turbulence advisories across the lower 48, there weren't advisories anywhere north of cuba. if they were to hit it, there would be that flairup around jamaica. what we show you on the satellite doesn't translate to what they are feeling in the air. one more lesson when the pilot puts on the seat belt sign to sit down, when this happens, might want to take his advice. >> it's true. you can have turbulence in thunderstorm but also get clear air turbulence as well. right, ro

rob marciano monitoring the extreme weather here in new york. particularly from new york, but from new york. hurricane bill out there. the big question is, how much recurve will that hurricane experience -- will it take it away from the northeast or toward it? >> the big question is, until it makes that turn -- >> let's check out the satellite imagery. looks fairly impressive. strengthens overnight. the leeward islands. 110 miles from that spot. a well-defined eye. the winds are 100 miles per hour. gusting at 120. movement at west-northwest at 17. until it makes that turn, we're not going to rest easy. not talk about the projected path of this thing. hurricane models up in force. a handful of them up here. give you an idea of where most of them are tracking toward bermuda. a lot of them shoot the gap. bring them close to the united states. the hurricane center showed the code of uncertainty will be close to the eastern seaboard as we get to day five. also notice it will be a category 3, a dangerous storm for sure. we see that recurvature and get

i'm rob marciano. watching hurricane bill, the new update for the national hurricane center breaking with the winds of 135 miles per hour, that has not changed much. winds gusting to 60 there. this is a strong category 4 and could possibly get a little bit stronger as we go through time. about 400 miles east of the leeward islands heading in that direction. look at the size of this thing and the eye of this thing very well structured and they just got hurricane hunter aircraft in and out of there with good data that adjust the wind field from this thing has really expanded. hurricane force winds have extended about 80 miles out from the center. what is the track? still same realm. weakness in that high and this trough with the front will suck it up the east coast and probably block it off towards the atlantic ocean. so, national hurricane center forecast track brings it as a category 4 storm, probably strengthening just a little bit more. conditions are right for that and then likely shooting the gap b

eastern only here on cnn. >>> in the meantime, rob marciano is tracking our weather news. what is bill up to now? >> well, still a category three storm, that dropped down from last night, don. but they're still in very favorable waters to get back to category four status. 125-mile-an-hour winds. look at what has changed today. there you go, the winds are 125, and then you see a bit of deterioration around that eye. it's not quite as well defined as it used to be, but the area out here, still very juicy warm waters and winds are favorable for development. the official forecast is for that to happen. the movement, though has changed from a west-northwesterly direction to a northwesterly direction. some weakness driving it to the south. so the turn to the north, now, is starting to take shape. the national hurricane centers, bringing it to category four strength. between the carolinas and bermuda, that will be good. it has shift add little farther to the west. the cone of uncertainty to include extreme northeastern new england, so those folks will be affected if not by a graz

. >>> over to the severe weather center now where, hey, rob marciano is standing by, ready to tell usis time yesterday we were getting the folks in louisville, kentucky, and parts of southern indiana getting hammered with thunderstorms and record-breaking rain through parts of louisville and show you some of this video coming out of it. six inches of rain like in a two-hour period and aerials for you. interstate 65 shut down at one point and a number of roads and couple feet of water and folks getting stranded, as well. even at churchill downs, they had to evacuate over 30 thur obreads because the water was rising in the stables and a lot of the race track under water. a lot of this has receded since these pictures were taken but it came and went in a hurry and folks there cleaning up from the record muddy rainfall. right now the rain is occurring across parts of eastern kentucky and a lot of the rain right now south of memphis heading across southern parts of arkansas and this has been fairly active today, as well, as far as seeing damaging winds and heavy rain there. it is moving fa

rob marciano with the weather center in atlanta tracking extreme weather across the country. morning" yesterday, john, kiran, the skies opened up across louisville. still in kentucky. flash flood watches advisories coming out this morning. the video from louisville, they had 6 1/2 inches of rain. waist deep water in many cases. roads submersed, interstates submerged. they had to get 30 to 35 thoroughbreds out of there. they're drying out a little bit. but it all came down in a real big hurry. the radar right now looking at rainfall across parts of kentucky, but it looks like the worst is over. most of the action is down to the south. memphis, a line of thunderstorms. this has sparked a couple of tornado warnings now driving south toward greenville. i want to point out the hurricane season well under way, at least in the pacific. got a couple of things going on. enrique and felicia. that's this one right here. that has gained strength. it may suck enrique in to felicia and become one. heading to hawaii. see what happens. typically the storms will weaken. regardless, we'll be i

. >>> let's get you to rob marciano. going to ask you what is going on in the tropics and what's the latest on danny, but, oh, good, give us an update on the wildfires in california, if you would, sir. >> a handful going on there. the last check about 20% contained or so. but the big one which you reported yesterday, still over 1,700 acres burned and these red areas you see there, those are red flag warnings. these are areas with relatively low levels of humidity and hot again today. yesterday we had record-breaking heat and i think we'll see that again today with temperatures in some spots up and over 100 degrees. that's not going to help firefighters. not much in the way of rain, that is mostly across parts of the western great lakes and also down across parts of florida, they have been getting, this is their west season, of course, that will often give you problems when you try to launch the space shuttle. we struck out twice this week once because of weather and once because of a leaky valve and now tonight another n

i'm rob marciano in the severe weather center. a couple fronts bringing rough weather and one across the western great lakes and moving off to the east, places like minneapolis and over towards mu walky and eventually getting down towards chicago and feel the effects throughout the day today and then a troublesome front right through here and across the south and just draping across florida. this is what has given folks in nasa some fits because they tried to launch the space shuttle last night and great nighttime launch around 1:00 in the morning and clouds and visibility was bad, they canceled that. we're already starting to see some action in the form of some thunderstorms, at least off shore right now. here's the forecast. from the folks there at nasa and the air force with a 1:10 departure time tonight, they gave a 30% probability of weather making this a no go for launch. so, we're hoping that the radar clears and we'll get this thing off the launch pad later tonight and spectacular show if you have the visibility to see it.

here to tell us about felicia and the rest of the weather, is rob marciano. we don't want to scare people. it will weaken. >> it looks pretty bad on the satellite picture, but when you look at the pacific ocean, you really looking at a wide expanse of water. a lot of real estate to go from there to there to get to honolulu, you're looking at 1,700 miles and to get to the big island, i don't know 1,300 or 1,400 miles. that's the situation here. my goodness, it is really something. look at the eye on that. category 4 storm, it strengthened overnight. what's going on here, you have this thing which is hurricane felicia and this is tropical storm enrique. that's weakening and kind of getting wrapped up in this thing. they're real close. only 400 miles apart and this typically happens in the western pacific where they'll get two combining and they call it a fancy name, fuji war effect, but that's not happening here. it's pretty darn close. that's interesting. here's the forecast track and the strength of it. 1 140-mile-per-hour winds with gusts to 165. that's cert

rob marciano, you were talking with us earlier, this santa cruz mountains wildfire. i believe that's what we're looking at right now. no other reason to put that up there. >> as of 1:00 last night they had 1,200 acres burned and that is probably around 2,000 right now. 3,000 people evacuated. >> number of homes threatened? >> 250 and they think they will evacuate more. winds will change today and they are attacking it by air now that the sun is up. they got it by the ground and by the air, as well. a bit of an onshore push coming in. that's typically good news and if you could throw it in play. the wind last night were more out of the north, northwest and now they're coming in from the west and that typically is good, but this time around we're not going to have that deep, deep moisture. the fire will continue to burn and, if anything, the wind will change direction of the fire and that will make those firefighters rearrange. rain across the northeast and flood watches in effect for much of jersey. feast or famine. this rain not going to get to the west coast. have t
