look at the rain across the bay area today that turned into snow in tahoe, let's check in with rob mayeda. >> quite a bit of rain came down this evening especially in the north bay up around napa and american canyon, over an inch. vallejo .75 inch. to the east bay about a half inch or less. .15 in san jose. a lot of that came down in 90 minutes time. you can see most of the moisture now moving off to the east around the east bay hill tops. widely scattered showers. this is the pattern. still some substantial rain for morgan hill down 101 to gilroy. that too will side off to the south and east. meantime, winter storm warnings continue for the sierra through 10:00 tomorrow. very likely looking at a foot of new snow in the sierra heading into tomorrow morning. scattered showers for your morning forecast. what about the afternoon? we'll have a full look of your weekend forecast coming up. >> coming up next, a 5.6 earthquake struck just about two hours ago. but nowhere near earthquake country. we'll show you the unlikely location in the united states. plus -- >> certainly it could backfire. yo

. >>> right now we want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda.busy guy because it's raining and things are changing by the second. >> it was a cool afternoon. right now as mentioned we've got wind and rain moving around the bay area. i want to show you temperatures around the bay area. last weekend 70s and 80s. today couldn't find any 60s. mid 50s around santa rosa for a high. right now we're seeing 50s outside. one thing you're probably noticing is winds picking up. our cold front dropping out of the north bay. winds picking up out of the south and southeast 15 to 25 miles per hour. speaking of the rain, a pretty good swath of yellow and orange indicating downpours reaching from san francisco over to the east bay now. from oakland to san leandro. the north bay, this is the back edge of that cold front sweeping south through marin county. next 15 minutes out to the tri-valley, heavier rain move in from castro valley into dublin and livermore. san jose, probably a half hour before moderate rain dropping through the santa clara valley. on the coast

i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda who's here with a forecast that is clear of thef you can't find your umbrella, at least you have a couple of days. >> until may thursday i think you'll be fine. right now we have clearing skies around the bay area and a little cool in santa rosa this morning. 43 degrees and clearing skies so that's allowing temperatures to drop off there, but the south bay we have high clouds moving to the south. you see some clearing out around the north bay. this is the outer fringe of a pretty powerful system bringing a lot of snow to the rockies but for us today it will start us off with overcast skies, especially around san jose. as we head around lunchtime and the afternoon, we should see temperatures in the mid-60s inland, upper 50s to low 60s around san francisco. morning fog the only concern through wednesday. then things make a winter-like turnpike thursday and friday. we will see some rain at times at this time next weekend highs in the low 50s. so soak in those warm 60s today. next weekend could be a little interesti interesting. >> tha

i'm chris sanchez with rob mayeda. looked like we would have frost but then pulled up the cloud blanket. >> mid and high level clouds. not fog. higher up. enough to keep the temperatures up more now across the north bay and san francisco. we have a sea breeze pulling in more mild air from the ocean. san francisco 49. 39 in santa rosa and notice the wind direction on shore starting to turn more mild in terms of the air around the inner bay. lots of clouds right now but the rain-producing clouds up the coast we suspect they drop in around lunchtime. a frost advisory for areas gilroy south and notice the temperatures in the afternoon. the clouds reflect back a lot of sunshine today, especially in the north bay. talking highs in the mid-50s around santa rosa and upper 50s to 60s and rain starting to pick up later on this afternoon. we have snow levels close to 4,000 feet. again, with this cold system and in the sierra maybe a foot of snow coming down. this is pretty wild for this time of year. we'll show you the details of
