rob mayeda is back to talk about what's happening outside.n is approaching. >> rain will come back in. good news for the morning commute. not much happening right now other than patchy fog in the north bay but it is chilly this morning. 34 degrees in napa. 39 in santa rosa. it is napa. coolest spot we're seeing now where we have fog and not much wind around the north bay now but by sundown tonight we'll see winds picking up out of the south with a cold front on the approach. that's going to bring us rain starting off maybe earlier in the afternoon in the north bay and then moving south later in the evening. winds at times up to 30 miles an hour. gusty at times this evening and then as the main cold front goes through, more showers to follow and lowering snow levels to finish off the week. today we'll see increasing clouds, rain dropping out of the north bay into the evening. first part of the commute is dry and toward midnight you can see rain crossing through the south bay. a dry start to 2013 so far so this system if it can drop at least a

. >>> meteorologist rob mayeda is in for christina loren talking about the rain that is on the way. >> still up on the north coast so you might notice the clouds are starting to spill into the bay area. the winds are really starting to kick up out of the south. temperatures mostly mid to upper 50s. the wind directions southeast at 11 in san jose. now southwest at 23 in novato. we'll see wind speeds close to 30 miles per hour later on this afternoon. that will change as that cold front, which is dropping down the coast, makes raindrop back into the bay area by this afternoon for the north bay. then for the entire bay area by 9:00 tonight changing over to showers as we head into early tomorrow. so the most rain we've seen so far this year will likely fall with a single storm. a moderately strong winter storm that will pack quite a punch for the sierra. over a foot of fresh powder above 5,000 feet. that's not the end of the rain and snow. we'll show you the rest of the weather headed our way coming up in the seven-day forecast in just a few minutes. back to you. >>> getting ready to live

there is green on the radar. >> rob mayeda is excited about that, i'm guessing. take it away, rob. >> absolutely. still some snow headed toward the sierra or the higher peaks, part of the south bay hilltops later tonight. right now let's take you out from the view over san bruno mountain looking over to san francisco. you can see some rain falling there. we've got moisture coming up out of the south right on top of san bruno mountain. that forces the air to rise, cools, condenses, thus precipitation over the not so much when you don't have the same lifting force down below. down around san francisco, the flatland not providing any lift in the atmosphere but we've got plenty of lift on the coastal hilltops and that's where the rare is finding most of the rain from san bruno mountain back to the coast. a little rain around oakland and berkeley, mainly light rain, but the heaviest rain continues to be on the ocean-facing side of the santa cruz mountains. the exception happening around san jose. sthaur starting to see a few more showers filling in. it's this band tha

. >> rob mayeda has a look at the forecast. do you believe that check? huge. >> excellent cause, too, and i hope larry is ready for upper 30s with rain on the east coast and maybe appreciating our weather more as we look at morning temperatures outside and some haez there looking over san jose and thanks to the clear skies this morning it's running cooler than yesterday. we have 42 degrees in livermore and 49 in san francisco, winds somewhat onshore around novato and a southwest breeze into napa and in concord, and with the sunshine even though we'll get a sunnier start to the morning and cooler air aloft, and we should see those numbers, mainly 60s to low 70s and one of the changes will be increasing high clouds and clouds lowering in elevation as we go through the day tomorrow and mid and high-level clouds still mild as fairly muggy air sweeps into the bay area heading into monday night and by tuesday is when the rain should start up and it should last very briefly over the next couple of days and things should clear out in the second half of the week.

rob mayeda is here live and in person. >>> we're seeing really nice conditions around the bay area. wasn't are for the wind out there now, we'll show you a view outside, looking at san francisco, all the lights are up again. isn't that a gorgeous view? the camera is hanging on for dear life. that's mounted pretty well. temperatures now cooling after a day that did manage some mid-60s in the north bay. 65 there thanks to some north winds in santa rosa. most of the bay area upper 50s and close to 60. tomorrow we should see the numbers come up probably five degrees and a few more sunday. in san francisco and livermore, no difference from the tri-valley. good, strong sea breeze pumping in the cooler air. west wind at 20 in downtown san francis francisco. some gusts above 30 miles an hour at sfo within the last half hour. so tonight it will stay breezy at times. a slight chance of a stray shower around the south bay. we'll show that you coming up. during the day tomorrow mostly sunny. still gusty in the hills and high pressure builds back across the west coast. the radar is looking good.

. >>> let's check in rob mayeda and see what's going on. >> we had temperatures that reached the mid-70s earlier, still hanging on to the mid-70s in morgan hill. 66 in san jose. a cool 58 degrees as the sea breeze cranks up now into san francisco. and low 70s in towards the tri-valley areas, east of 680. tomorrow, probably not going to get there. we're going to have a stronger sea breeze and some extra low clouds to wake up to tomorrow morning, and there you see the winds, at times up to 28 miles per hour. then by 8:00, 9:00, we'll see the wind speeds start to back off. as we get into the workweek, air quality is relatively good, because the wind is stirring up any problems of ground level ozone. that's not the issue. it's the pollen, which is still really off the charts here. take your pick, from oak and mold and ash and mulberry still in the high range. we're talking about a chance of seeing some showers for the middle part of the week, that may provide some short-term allergy relief to parts of the bay area. tonight and tomorrow morning, what you'll notice will be the return of the

rob mayeda is here to explain more. >> we have more clouds and the moisture content of the atmospheres starting to increase. temperatures out there kind of muggy and mild. upper 50s after 11:00. 54 in oakland. dew point temperatures upper 40s and lower 50s. the air is getting closer to saturation, the rain falling higher up is mostening things. reaches the ground at times tonight. onshore winds into tomorrow will help cool down temperatures a bit. right now, around the marin headlands, you can see a few light showers showing up. as some of this movie rides up, that will provide extra lip to the moisture. again during the day tomorrow. you can see how really not seeing a whole lot in san jose, but plenty of clouds right now. the moisture is feeding in from the south as this upper level system tracks by. during the day tomorrow probably more sunshine, but it's the sunshine coupled with the moisture below and cooler air aloft that will set us up for convective showers. overnight a few sprinkles or light rain showers, and watch what happens as we head toward the afternoon. notice the show

let's turn things over to rob mayeda today. >> temperatures mainly in the 50s around the bay area.s outside and a few spots managed to get into the 60s this afternoon. close to 60 in fremont, downtown san jose 59. you can see right now still in the 50s out there. breezy around the inner bay. 51 in san jose, 53 in liver more. winds generally out of the northeast and the east bay hills temporarily bringing in drier air underneath some of the moisture sweeping in from the south. most of the rain we're seeing closer to the area of low pressure off the coast of santa cruz right now but enough lift in the atmosphere around san francisco to toss you light rain at this hour. as you head to the south bay, notice the action picks up around the santa cruz mountains area south of santa fe. campbell, highway 85 you're seeing heavier rain at this hour. mainly moderate rain and lighter rain up toward san jose. the air kind of dries out heading up towards milpitas. 101 south through morgan hill and gilroy, the wettest commute. the chillier air in place. look at this, you got some snow showers arou

i did talk to my friend, rob mayeda. he agrees. that's good news when meteorologists have a good amount of certainty. as you can see right now, satellite and radar tells the story. that big area of low pressure. you can see spotty clouds. that's cold air. this is the actual core moving to the south. it will spin up showers in the bay area. you can see the general nature of the showers moving south to north. in the south bay, you have the best chance for that. we'll keep showers in the mix until 9:00 a.m. this morning. finally waking up tomorrow with mostly clear conditions. a beautiful weekend shaping up. so highs today will be on the cool side. 60 in livermore. 59 in gilroy. look at where we are headed. if you want a taste of spring, we get it. as of sunday we'll jump to 70 degrees. a ten-degree jump between today and sunday. by monday the mid 70s. by tuesday, we hold onto that beautiful weather. sunshine stays all of the way through thursday. and then things start to change thursday night into friday. clouds increase next storm s
