thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. yesterday, rob, we got a little showers and really gusty winds in the south bay. >> yeah, not as windy but still have some moisture left over. good enough for light rain and showers at times this morning in the south bay and we're seeing a little of that spilling over from the santa cruz mountains. into san jose, a few sprinkles around downtown and this will be the trend for the first half of the day. we'll continue to see showers dropping in off the hilltops spilling from south to north across the bay area. the moisture from yesterday's system is being drawn northward out ahead of a frontal boundary that's adding extra lift to the clouds outside and that will give us light rain or drizzle at times. not a whole lot but enough to wet the ground. in san jose over towards palo alto during the day. temperatures today in the 50s. we'll get temperatures climbing into the upper 50s to low 60s today. a lot of gray to start off the day and now actually some more rain opportunities for the first

meteorologist rob mayeda joins us. >> we're seeing break in between wer werth systems. it's a short break we're seeing now. you see the clouds approaching the coast. and that will be the next batch of moisture that will bring us rain. we do think in time for the morning commute, you can see that right around 7:30 in the morning, you start to see the light rain come through. not so much in the south bay. just some lighter rain. as you go through the afternoon you'll see heavier showers push through. you can see most of the accumulations will be up in the north bay, but not a lot at that. that's noon. and .02 of an inch of rain might make the ground a little wet, but not much of a yes, ma'am pant. as we approach the evening commute, still relatively dry. and the big totals will come after 6:00 tomorrow. the main effect of this storm coming in for tomorrow night. and we'll show you the complete rain totals, and the second storm system coming in on wednesday. >>> a sinkhole opened up because of the storms. traffic was partially closed on west cliff drive. chp officials say

. >>> rob mayeda is active all day long, all he cares about is weather. he's got your micro climate forecast. >> we had 70s in the forecast today. and on the way, the warmest day we've seen so far this spring is coming up for tomorrow but then everything drops off temperature wise with some chances of rain. should see 40s and 50s tomorrow morning. winds out of the west today which helped to clear out our skies. and high pressure compressed the marine layer and allowed the inland valleys to climb moot ine mid-70s. as we await the arrival of a storm system that will make a big impact on tuesday. upper level winds digging down into the base of the trough and tends to drop them further south as opposed to moving up towards seattle and portland. we'll see increasing clouds, high clouds for monday. but it's tuesday morning now as we'll take a closer view of that hour by hour forecast which you'll see some light to moderate rain sweeping through for the morning commute but this should be out of here for the afternoon commute on tuesday. but behind this we'll see

meteorologist rob mayeda has a look at the weekend forecast.e headed out. >> you do need a jacket. mid to upper 40s in san jose and the santa clara valley the pe nine sue la roughly the same temperatures. san francisco a bit more wild at least 50 degrees temperatures closer to the water. east bay we're seeing patches of low cloud for dublin and livermore. 41 walnut creek. look at the numbers in the north bay where the temperatures have dropped down with the mainly clear skies. maybe a patch or two of fog. 37 this morning in santa rosa. as you get into the afternoon, the coast will still see the low clouds at times. sunshine inland and despite the chilly start a nice afternoon ahead and the low clouds weave back in heading towards tomorrow morning. we'll see highs in the low 70s in san jose. low to mid-60s around san francisco, but, again, it's the pollen count which is extraordinarily high. we could use some rain to knock this down and i know kris sanchez would appreciate that. tuesday we think we'll get some rain back to the bay area. kris? >>

we bring in rob mayeda for what this could mean in terms of the drought. the last time we had an el nino it rained a lot in '97 and '98. >> we did see flooding occurring that year. but it really depends on how strong that el nino becomes. if it's a weak to moderate el nino, half the time we see drier winters, which isn't good news. we go back to 1976 and '77 we had a drought in an el nino year. what you need is a strong el nino. four out of six of those happen. of course the flooding that jessica referred to back in '97 and '98 was when we had two and a half times normal rainfall for san francisco. so the places that we will be watching will be off the coast of south america there. it may not offset the drought problem. but what you have to watch is this area off the coast of south america if it starts to warm up even more than what the models are projecting, developing into a strong el nino, it will have the ability to redirect the tropical jet stream right into southern california. but we need to see if the el nino coming our way does bet that strong. if

meteorologist rob mayeda is here with the microclimate forecast. my son plays in the little league and the braves did win today. >> and it did not rain on them. >> it was gorgeous. >> spring weather has arrived. whether the little leagues or big leagues in australia. we have a good breeze going through which will pull in low clouds heading into tomorrow morning. 40s and 50s right now. the winds not as strong as at 5:00 but all the arrows pointing inland and that will but the clouds across the bay tomorrow morning. if you wake up around san francisco mist is possible in the low clouds as we get started tomorrow morning. you can see that the storm track through the end of the weekend is aimed on the pacific northwest but that is subject to change. over the next ten days, about six of the days include a chance of seeing rain but not for the next two at least. sunday and monday things looking dry. tomorrow morning, that's the low cloud cover we were talking about across the bay. sunshine inland, patchy low clouds on the coast. more 70s in the forecast.

i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. and a little chillier than i was expecting when i walked out this morning. >> the clear skies in san jose one of the spots waking up to the 40s. san francisco we got partly cloudy skies 50 right now in san francisco. now let's show you san jose. it is 46 degrees. partly cloudy skies around the peninsula and hazy skies there and 46 and a little bit of loaf clouds that have crept into the santa clara valley. cool start but by the afternoon the 40s should be getting closer to 70 degrees a little bit later on as we watch the onshore winds that have brought in coastal low clouds and fog. but look at the north bay temperatures, you think 40s are cold we got 30s around petaluma and novato this morning and by the afternoon the temperatures should be climbing. look out for patchy fog there. santa rosa less than a half mile at times. and those low clouds will continue to be part of your weather story around half moon bay. no rain-producing clouds, those are way off to the north but we're going

. >> let's bring in rob mayeda as we inch toward our weekend.e saw the giants and a's game tonight. it looked beautiful at the ballpark. >> it was very nice and tomorrow, looking at a few showers, it's that saturday game as the series transitions into oakland. right now, san francisco looking pretty nice. no problems with fog or raindrops right now. it's kind of mild outside, mid to upper 50s at 11:00, with the moist flow coming in out of the south, we shouldn't see the temperatures drop a lot, tonight, low 50s and the satellite and radar view, you can see a few sprinkles offshore, part of the isolated showers for areas around the peninsula, maybe into the south bay. it -- all of this begins to push to the south tomorrow. we'll see a warm day, 70s in the forecast. notice through 1:00, not a lot happening, a few scattered showers around areas south of san francisco. most of the action will be north of san francisco. the rain line at times will sweep through the bay area and notice something interesting for the south bay saturday afternoon. that's

rob mayeda joins us now with the weekend forecast. we're almost close to the wmd, right? >> just about there. we'll see a change to the warmer for most of the bay area starting tomorrow heading into the weekend. right now you can see the bay bridge lights quite nicely. tomorrow morning, patchy fog, 48 degrees in the north bay and right now the winds starting to back off a little bit. it was breezy this evening. winds generally out of the northwest and in the inland valleys, might see some of that patchy fog. tomorrow morgue, visibility has dropped close to a mile in napa. so that's one of the things we'll be watching. tune in tomorrow morning to watch the visibilities very closely as they drop off, especially on the coast or your highway 17 commute heading into the south bay. likely you will see some of the low clouds before we see mostly sunny skies. here's the break for friday. more clouds offshore that will have an impact on the second half of the weekend. for tomorrow morning, fog to start and some of the high clouds going by for the afternoon. nice day as you go hour

with more perspective on that, here's meteorologist rob mayeda. >> a lot of the storm reports, a bull's-eye. we had this rain, heavy amounts of rain coming in from the south during the morning. you put this map into motion, you'll see here that we have the rain coming in, out of the south, moving off to the north and that rain, as it tracks inland from south to north is the reason why the santa cruz mountains didn't block out this incoming storm system. we had that rainfall, heavy at times in san jose, good enough to give us a 28% rainfall boost. and the san luis reservoir, it was at 31% of capacity. we have gone up about 2%, that's about 20.3 billion gallons of water. so every little bit adding up in the south bay reservoirs. and look at the snow pack. 33% of average, but the 1976-77 low, we're now falling behind even that all-time low level. 33% of average statewide right now in the central sierra. and if you could brave the road conditions, yes, it was good for skiing. the snow continues to come down up there tonight. >> thank you so much, rob. >>> as we look at the live radar, snow cont

but right now i want to turn it over to meteorologist rob mayeda with more on how much rain we got and what it means in terms of the larger picture. >> the rain we're seeing right now, the heaviest around the south bay. that's been the trend of the day. south san jose going over 2 inches of rain. san ramon approaching an inch and a half. for san jose, going just under an inch of rain at the airport today, that boosted the rainfall totals for the seasonal rainfall by 28% in a single day. that gives you an idea how dry it's been in san jose that just an inch of rain can do that. also good news, a slight uptick at the san luis reservoir going up to about 33% historical average. and in the sierra, the numbers improving somewhat. the snow pack at 33% of average. if you look at the two lines at the bottom of the screen, running below that 1976-1977 average. so we need plenty of ground to make up. hopefully this trend can continue through the next few weeks. more on the forecast coming up. now back to you. >> very good information, rob. thank you. it's a dangerous mix, this commute combined w

let's check the forecast now with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> we're hoping for rain as we see these totals from the drought monitor yesterday. north bay now going into the extreme drought mode after things have been dry since march 3-5. and this means for the south bay into the tri-valley exceptional drought. san jose and fremont. we could use the rain, not going to see any today. it's chilly in spots. sunnyvale 44 degrees, up the peninsula 40s with patchy fog. 50 in the mission, over toward the east bay and tri-valley, currently seeing temperatures in the 40s down to 45 in dublin this morning and it's the north bay, 44 degrees in santa rosa and you do have patchy fog. winds have turned onshore. that's going to drop our temperatures a few degrees. even sunshine. it's the fog that's going to slow things. santa rosa, less than a half mile visibility and seeing visibilities dropping off on the coast too. you can see we've got high clouds going on by. but no rain in the forecast. but things may begin to change toward the middle of next week. the weekend ahead looks pretty dry and our te

. >> we turn things over to rob y mayeda. >> let's show you san francisco. very fascinating here. you've got moisture coming in riding up over the hilltops. it cools below its dew point and the clouds form over the tops of the hills so you're literally seeing clouds created now as the moisture increases in the atmosphere. it will eventually lead to rain as we head into tomorrow morning or at least tonight for parts of the north bay. as we watch it continue, we should see temperatures close to 60. first pitch time, 7:156789 increasing clouds, maybe some misty conditions very late in the game, but most of the rain holding off for san francisco up till we get toward tomorrow morning. so as we zoom you back in toward the bay area, you can see toward the north bay, north of santa rosa starting to see a few light showers pass by, and that is the first wave of three storms that will be coming in over the next several days. hour by hour over the rest of the season, you've got the clouds moving on in. notice the lifting into north bay. even at 7:00 tomorrow morning, look at the season mont
