rob mayeda true or false? >> that is true. resort at squaw creek, lake tahoe fresh snow there. clear skies around the bay area. good air quality. 57 in san francisco. try conditions around the tri-valley. we've got upper 50s, as well in dublin after a highs today in the mid 60s. similar temperatures for tomorrow. san jose looking nice. christmas in the park downtown. 59 degrees and mostly clear skies. for the morning, 40s and we have to watch out for patchy fog may be setting up in the inland valleys. high temperatures tomorrow very close to what we had today. 64 in san jose. low 60s for san francisco. mid 60s ukiah. 66 tomorrow in santa cruz. the item to watch next couple of nights and mornings is to see if the fog drifts in from the east through the east bay valleys or sets up around the bay. that is the only real weather concern we have. before the rain makes a big come back come tuesday and wednesday. clouds approaching us from the west. but the first in the series of storms will hold off till about tuesday. the futurecast shows you monday looks just fine. tuesday light rai

we begin with meteorologist rob mayeda. you've been tracking the storm. what is the status of it now? >> right now we're beginning to see the transition to the south bay in terms of the heavier rain. look at these totals since wednesday, more than 5 inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains, leading to runoff issues. moraga, to the east bay hills, napa, 2 to 3 inches of rain. less at lower elevations, san jose .25 inches. san francisco and oakland, over 1 inch since the trend. scattered showers north of san francisco, but still a line of heavier showers right over downtown san jose where they're having a tree lighting ceremony. you can see heavier rain bands here, along highway 87 and south san jose, this is the last gasp in terms of widespread heavier rain. starting to head out of the south bay. check out the action toward the sierra, a lot of snow at times, above 7,000 feet and stacking up in the pacific will be more storms like this one, bringing snow to the sierra and potentially wind and rain back into the bay area. three storms in the seven-day fo

rob mayeda is here. what can they expect? >> over my shoulder, about 25% of california under a red flag warning at this hour. locally those advisories have dropped for areas closer to the bay. it's mendocino county and lake county, still seeing red flag conditions up through about 7:00 tomorrow morning. you can see along the campfire. these areas still seeing the dry, gusty offshore breezes. you see how the winds still pump the smoke to the south to the bay area. as the wind speeds slow down we have lost the red speed warnings, but the transport of air bringing in unhealthy air conditions that i think you'll notice big-time tomorrow morning. you can see on the map, hour-by-hour for the morning, unhealthy levels of air quality around the bay area. coming up, we'll let you though when the winds may shift and if there is any rain coming up. we'll look at that at about 15 minutes past the hour. >>> raiders fans had to deal with smoky skies during today's game against the chargers at the oakland coliseum. one fan added a raiders l

rob mayeda is here to tell us about some rain that can improve everything. rob? >> i think we're in that 48-hour window of things to be get better. on the map unhealthy air for both of the bay area. numbers starting to come down around san francisco and half half. if you rewind back to friday night, you saw the areas in purple here. the very unhealthy to dangerous air quality. that was friday night into saturday morning. now still unhealthy, but not near the peak of the smog event around the bay area. so for tomorrow, unhealthy once again. probably another spare the air day for tuesday, which will be 13 in a row. but look at these winds. storm-driven. onshore winds pick up and accelerating into wednesday, as we see a major pattern change long overdue. that's going to bring us the most rain since april, snow to the sierra, and perhaps 1 to 2 inches of rain. the timeline on the big change overto arena in about 15 minutes. >> thank you, rob. >>> some schools will remain closed tomorrow. all elementary, middle and high schools that are scheduled to be in session will

i didn't know until i saw that and talked to rob mayeda and kari hall about that, it really is a science as to why it changes the landscape, and leaves people vulnerable after they've already become victims. in paradise, kris sanchez "today in the bay." >> that's right, we saw that in montecito, a problem with the flooding there. thanks so much, kris. let's talk about the storm headed their way. are they going to get pounded with a lot of rain? >> it looks like a lot of the rain in the forecast and some of the computer models are putting down five-plus inches, some as high as nine inches, and that's a crazy amount of rain in just a span of about two to three days, and so this first storm arrives, and we're looking at the timing here, when we'll start to see some of that rain moving in early tomorrow morning, with some scattered showers, and then some of the heavier downpours will continue through about wednesday afternoon. some of that rain looks like it kind of trains over some of those same areas, and then there will be some breaks in between, but then the rain that starts to come in o

>> reporter: we're getting a little bit of a break right now, getting what kari hall and rob mayeda liker spray rain. it's very fine, kind of blowing around at this point, but it was raining as we were leaving the parking lot in san jose, and as we made our way down here to morgan hill, where we are this morning. in san francisco, the storm preps are aggressive. they're putting up storm bare areas inment so of the low-lying areas known for flooding. it is a tricky spot in the mission district. kari hall and the weather team have been forecasting heavy rain for that spot today and tomorrow. public utilities crews are also going out with giant vacuum trucks to suck out the storm drains and make sure that they are clear for when that water comes through. it can just kind of dissipate. here in the south bay, the sandbag stations are stocked for folks who need to divert rainwater. it doesn't take a lot of water to get into your house to do a lot of damage. talking about a little bit of water making a lot of mold in some of the low-lying spots. if you have a garage door, that's where you want
