let's check in with rob mayeda. and rob, you have the big stories of the day. you got the smoke is going to be leaving and hopefully no more smoke coming in from fire. look at the fire danger in december. it's crazy. >> because the hill sides are still october dry around the bay area. and yes, the wind will pick up. good news for air quality. not so good news will be the direction of the wind which will be north and offshore as we head into monday morning. cooling quickly as the clouds start to and a pretty view. san francisco a little chilly at 51 degrees. you see some of the city lights there. 54 currently in walnut creek. and in san jose -- or actually livermore there 53 degrees with the temperatures around san jose also in the 50s. here's the better part of the forecast tomorrow improving if the wind picks up. fortunately the weather system bringing up the wind isn't bringing us any chance of rain. you can see it falling apart as it crosses the bay area, so we'll start the day tomorrow with some clouds, but those clouds start to clear as we head through the

let's check in with rob mayeda right now. when are the winds moving in and when will they be the strongest? >> looks like within the next 24 hours, so kind of two sides to the coin that should help our air quality issues. we'll begin to see the winds picking up, especially around the north bay hills. let's take you outside in view of san jose. we'll show you some of the hazy skies out there. a beautiful sunset moment. this is tossing a considerable amount of high level clouds over the bay area, but as the storm ranger, scanning the skies there, nothing to show for it. so mid and high level clouds. great for sunsets, not for raindrops. the transition, air quality should improve, but december fire danger conditions on the hills as dry as mid october. so fi time the winds pick up out of the north and northeast, like they will tomorrow and especially sunday night into monday, that's getting our attention. we'll take a closer look at the hour by hour wind speeds, and when any rain may try to make a comeback in that extended foreca

meteorologist rob mayeda will be the first to know. he's here with an early look at the timeline. hi, rob. >> the timeline and just over my shoulder you can see the amounts of rain we expect to come in over the next few days. a lot of orange and red showing up, which means some of the coastal mountains could be looking at two to three inches of rain. speaking of storm ranger, you saw the outside view atop san bruno mountain. let's show you the view of the radar. there's a lot of overcast around the bay area but those aren't the rain producing clouds. the out fringe of a storm bay that in the north bay will be an all day impact. for the east bay starting up in the afternoon for walnut creek. probably the last to see the impacts, late afternoon into the evening we'll begin to see that arriving into san jose for christmas day. so the mountains bearing the brunt of this storm. one to two inches of rain for most of the mountain areas followed up by a colder storm late sunday that could drop snow levels maybe as low as mt. diablo and certainly around mountain hamilton. the full forecast

. >>> let's get a check of our forecast with rob mayeda. still chilly overnights and in the mornings, rob. >> we're kind of getting the weird blend of winter obviously for the morning. those temperatures chilly, in the 30s, a little patchy fog in a few spots. as we saw today for the afternoon, we still had those highs in the mid to upper 60s. this is not what you'd expect as we approach the month of december. we do have some big waves on the coast. we'll talk about that in a moment. first let's take you outside. a post-sunset view and it looks like a weather person framed this shot. we're looking at mostly the sky there as opposed to san francisco. 53 degrees now and without the fog and the clouds, which tend to act a bit like a blanket, as soon as the sun sets with the dry air in place, temperatures really cool quickly around the region. walnut creek, still 61 degrees for now. we did have highs earlier in the upper 60s. in the south bay, san jose at 56 degrees. and earlier you might have noticed some haze in the skies as the winds have kind

rob mayeda joins us. turned out to be a beautiful day. the fog cleared away in many places. >> yeah, you know, the wind picked up. it helped to be the big fog leaf blower out of the bay. the fog has moved out. now the clearing skies, chilly night ahead. then attention turns to this christmas day storm, one that the weather models seem to be throwing quite a bit more rain, especially towards the coastal mountains. we'll take a closer look at the impact on that. first let's take a look outside, a beautiful evening around the bay area. san jose, 56 degrees. winds at 12-miles-per-hour out of the northwest. once the winds back off tonight, temperatures dropping quickly. right now walnut creek 57 degrees. that's a big change. this time yesterday we were still in the 40s with low clouds and fog, so the skies have cleared there. you can see livermore down to 52 degrees. there's a postcard view of downtown, 56 fog free with clear skies. the wind has also helped air quality. you'll notice across the board we're in the moderate range for tomorrow, s

. >>> let's check in with rob mayeda right now. damian was talking about a ray of hope for the people here. there's also a ray of hope in the sky. it's the christmas star that's going to be available for viewing. >> yeah. as we said, weather permitting, though. here's the issue. a great view in the sky if you can see it as we've got jupiter and saturn kind of combining there that we will hopefully be able to catch a glimpse of in the next couple of hours . this event is pretty rare when you consider the next comparable event of this type isn't until march 15th, 2080. so how do you see it? now we passed sunset, it's a southwestern sky where jupiter and saturn are aligned to almost look like a single point of light in the sky. two points of light ta are pretty close together. here's the issue. we've got some patchy fog lingering around the bay area, plus high clouds also moving in. keep in mind jupiter and saturn, they set at 7:10 in the evening so you've got this two hour window of opportunity. if you happen to get a picture, please

rob mayeda is here again. so nice to see you. another cold morning but beautiful afternoon. >> yeah, cold morning with a little bit of fog. we saw a lot of that lingering around san jose and the north bay with those very chilly temperatures. it was a bit of a challenge for anyone trying to drive around because we had a little ice on the roads due to the fog in the north bay so that is our short-term concern. the foggy start, chilly temperatures, more high clouds during the day tomorrow. then as we move forward, this dry weather could bring up the issue of december fire danger, especially for southern california later this week. we'll look at that in a moment. let's take you outside to those temperatures where after the day that was mainly in the 60s, now cooling back into the 50s. 58 in walnut creek with mostly sunny skies. a similar view in san jose, 59 degrees. eventually we will see low temperatures tonight dropping back into the 30s and low 40s. still some haze out there with the skies. we have moderate air quality levels aro
