let's get meteorologist rob mayeda. a lot of places impacted by very cold weather. >> from north, east, and south, including san jose, 51 degrees right now and cooling quickly around the tri-valley, 46 near livermore. high today only in the upper 40s. here we go. sundown now, temperatures will cool as we head towards tonight. it will be the santa clara valley, san jose south toward gilroy under freeze warning starting midnight tonight through 9:00 a.m. interior tri-valley, interior east bay, on into the north bay, these are the locations to the north of santa rosa, near calistoga, that likely could once again see temperatures close to the upper 20s by morning. so tomorrow morning, bayside, mid-30s. notice the trend as we get into monday and tuesday. lows in the 40s my monday morning. 40s and 50s by tuesday as clouds come in, which means rain is just around the corner. so the frigid air starts to move out. raindrops come back in. we'll show you how much rain you can expect, how much snow this can mean to the sierra in ou

our rob mayeda. the good news is the wind has died down. >> what a 24 hours we saw. wind speeds strong enough to be called damaging wind speeds. around the fire, up in sonoma counties, 96 miles per hour, 71 miles per hour wind gusts at mount diablo. you can see how things look last night, all the purples and reds, look at the picture now. it is really 20 to 30 miles per hour winds on the higher hills of the north bay. good news, the wind is starting to shutdown. we are expecting a calm finish. you can see how those wind speeds taper off. what we do need to see is more rain in the forecast and guess what, seven-day forecast brings a pattern shift that'll bring rain chances back and possibly a big drop and the temperatures are a lot lower what we are seeing right now. >> we'll see you in ten minutes, thank you. >>> the effect of high winds over night are being felt across the bay area. silverado trail is still closed because of downed power lines. crews expect to be done working tomorrow morning at the earlierist. >>> here is a look at the pg&e map. less than 5,000 cus

. >> we turn to rob mayeda. he has been tracking the advisory all day. rob, where are we now? >> we're watching what was an under sea volcanic eruption, displacing a lot of ocean water. saw it late last night. instead of being earthquake generated event, you have that eruption that displaced ocean water, as that energy travels the pacific. gets closer to the coast, it slows down. we saw peak levels in crescent city of three to four feet. bay area, point reyes, monterey, two to three foot rise in water level. that's what a tsunami advisory is supposed to cover would be water level rises, one to three feet. you can see some exceptions there, where it exceeded the numbers. san francisco, what was interesting about the data, around high tide is when we had peak water heights start to come in. you had the compounding effect of high tide and water levels rising. san francisco, about one foot rise there. notice what's interesting, it wasn't the initial waves, it was later on, fifth or sixth peak that saw the highest heights in san francisco. notice the difference between high and low

meteorologist rob mayeda has been tracking all of this. we got a nice break but the rain is back. >> and we're seeing quite a bit on the higher hills of marin county. mill valley, seeing almost an inch. winter weather advisory, 147% of average statewide snow pack. in the bay area, interesting statistic. added rain in kentfield, for the entire rainfall season, 12 months, already hit 96% of the season's average in just three months, it's been amazing start to the rainfall season in marin county, still seeing rain there tonight, and areas from the east bay along the santa cruz mountains, as we head towards morning commute, future cast shows scattered showers around the peninsula and santa cruz mountains. tuesday, first half of the day will see widespread showers before they move to the north bay, and more chances of rain coming in through the week, that's coming up in eight minutes. >>> another live look at nbc bay area storm ranger scanning the san bruno mountain. you can track live radar on the app to see when the rain is hitting your neigh

meteorologist rob mayeda joins us now. we had these super clear days, but here we go again with another round of rain. >> it's the opposite of a super clear day. reduced visibility. you've got wind, snow arriving, flights delayed by 30 to 60 minutes. more moderate rain in the head lands. there you see the rain around sfo and more rain around the santa cruz mountains. this is a pretty good moisture plume. the more intense weather will stay to the north. santa cruz mountains and north bay hills, the top totals. most of what falls tomorrow could be falling on the morning commute. plan or more wet roadways. winds about 15-20 miles per hour. we'll be watching that closely. look at the change in our morning temperatures. we had 20s and 30s for lows. we'll total all those up in your seven-day forecast. >>> if you want toknow what's going on if your neighborhood, download our app. >>> san francisco state is postponing its in-person commencement. it was set to take place january 8th at chase center to honor graduates of 2021 and 20

. >>> okay, rob mayeda, a lot of cloud cover today, barely saw the sun. >> yeah, areas south of san jose, only by mid afternoon broke out the sunshine. areas inland, in the 50s. cool conditions out towards livermore with cloudy skies and low clouds. misty skies. walnut creek at 51 and a little drizzle at times. 52 degrees. the wind is light, and all the cloud cover that's around is going to get a little extra boost as the weather system dropping down the coast gives us at time some drizzle which will actually transition briefly tomorrow morning to rain at times. starting off in the north bay around sun rise, temperatures in the upper 40s, and during the afternoon tomorrow, by early afternoon rain showers should be passing by san jose and temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, but we'll get a little sunshine out of tomorrow as the weak weather system kind of clears out from north to south during the day. right now we've got cloudy skies and hit and miss areas of mist and drizzle. by sun rise tomorrow, here comes that rain, heaviest around the coastline. and then by around lunchtime, you ca

let's talk to rob mayeda. what happened? the sun was out the last couple days and it was glorious. >> we ice in the tri valley, inland valleys. now some of that colder air has moved out and the rain has moved back in. 54 degrees, southeast wind at 13 miles per hour. cloudy skies in livermore at 53. a little bit of light rain on your 680 commute in walnut creek. from san francisco to marin county, south wind at 15 miles per hour. peak rain totals today, marin county by a long shot. you can see by mt. tam, more than an inch of rain in that very high-moisture-content rain. but not much registering yet around the central bay and south bay. right around mt. tam to rich richmond, a little light rain. the trend will likely continue as we go into tomorrow and the next couple days. peak focus for the rain, here's the projection. look at the areas in red. less than a quarter inch for most places. so the progression here as we head towards tomorrow morning, you will likely see more of the showers like we're seeing now for your morning

rob mayeda is tracking just how low those temperatures will drop. rob. >> yeah. even bayside, we will be waking up to temperatures in the 30s. it may include even downtown san francisco though right now still hanging on to the 40s for most of the bay area. 45 in santa rosa, though. it has been windy at times, so you combine that air temperature of 45. winds 10 to 15 miles per hour, it actually feels more like 41 degrees in santa rosa. mid-40s into san jose. by 11:00 tonight, areas around the north bay will be dropping into the mid-30s. upper 30s from san jose south u. that will be the trend tonight. this cold pattern locked in by that drop in the jet stream. no rain for the holiday weekend, but that is coming back now in the seven-day forecast. a big jump in those temperatures back to the 50s at night and 60s during the day. i'll look ahead at those changes coming up in ten minutes. >>> our cold spell tonight could be life-threatening for some people in the bay area who are living on the street or in the shadows. a lot of hardware stores have been doing a brisk b

meteorologist rob mayeda joins us now. is that fog going to be sticking around for some spots? >> for the morning commute, especially north bay and east bay. but what we're also seeing is wildfires from the colorado fire burning off to the south of monterey. you see high pressure above acting like a giant lid on top of the bay area, and some of that smoke from the fire, the colorado fire ongoing to our south is drifting towards the bay area. well didn't think we'd have to show wildfire smoke futurecast this early in the year, but here you go. look what's happening down here near monterey. some of the smoke curling back towards the bay area and moving south. as we head through the day tomorrow. so i do think with strong high pressure, we'll have an air quality impact tomorrow. moderate around the bay area. but pour the east bay, we could see locally unhealthy. the hazy skies could have reduced visibility for the morning commute at times. contra costa and solano county. it's going to be a chilly start. you can see 30s and 40s to start off your morning. coming up in the seven-day

like many places in the bay area, right to meteorologist rob mayeda. >> the freeze warning. san francisco still hanging on the 50s for the moment, but speaking of san jose, now down to 47 degrees. and look at livermore, getting closer to the 30s. and it's just 6:00, down to 42 degrees in the tri-valley. napa also 42 degrees from here. 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. santa clara valley through the coyote valley to gilroy with the freeze warning. temperatures in the low 30s here and maybe close to 30 in a few of the colder spots. tri-valley with the upper 20s around livermore and towards the north bay out near santa rosa and low 30s expected. towards 11:00 tonight, we should see widespread 30s and then in that freeze warning time frame by about 7:00 a.m. on the coldest temperatures arrive, you could see the bay side. see mid 30s. so frost possible on the bay shoreline for tomorrow morning. and then towards monday, this begins to change. warmer air comes in and the rain chances return to monday and then continue through the week. the impact on the sierra coming up in 12 minutes. >>

let's go ahead and bring in meteorologist rob mayeda, who has an updated timeline, so, rob, this is a with a lot of people heading back to school and work. >> yeah. and rain will be coming back but with the rain, will come those more mild temperatures. outside right now, we are at 51 degrees in san francisco. and instead of seeing 20s and 30s in our valleys like we had this morning with freeze warnings, we are expecting a few upper 30s out toward the tri-sally and north bay. right now, livermore dropped to 40 degrees and another thing for the morning will be a little bit of the wind picking up out of the south. notice our morning forecast. lots of 40s on the map here. few inland east bay 30s to start and then the rain will make an appearance as we go through the day. but i want to point out these winds out of the south from about 10 to 20 miles per hour. so even if you don't have the rain to start, you will probably notice wind speeds picking through the day into the evening. storm ranger not finding anything just yet in terms of rainfall but that will begin to change starting off in
