let's bring in our meteorologist, rob mayeda. rob, what are you seeing? and really that timeline you're thinking later in the day, after the polls close? maybe. yeah, election day around the bay area will have a red flag warning starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. but in terms of the peak wind gusts, that likely holds off until later tomorrow night. so notice the humidity tomorrow morning. not all that bad around the bay area, but by wednesday morning things change rapidly. that's when those strong, gusty offshore winds will start to develop. the peak of this wind event arriving late on tuesday night. right now it does look like as polls close around the bay area, the strongest winds will be in the north bay mountains and some of the east bay interior valleys, but much stronger winds are likely as we head into wednesday morning, with wind gusts above 50mph possible even in some of the interior valleys. that leads to the possibility of tree damage and more localized power issues. as we move forward into that wednesday forecast coming up, we'll take a clo

rob mayeda here now. and, rob, i know that we've enjoyed this weather, but we could talk about changes. yes, changes are on the way. it's been a nice start to the weekend. we did not have the dry, gusty winds like we had earlier this week. and actually temperatures above average. if you like 70 today. good news. round two comes tomorrow, but later tomorrow. that's when the changes start to roll in for the north bay. as we take a look back at today's high temperatures, low to mid 70s around the south bay, right on the average in san francisco should see mid 60s this time of year and into the north bay. highs near 70 degrees. so right now in san jose it's 55 partly cloudy skies. similar conditions as you head inland towards the east bay and tri-valley northward up towards walnut creek, 49 degrees right now. 53 in san rafael and into san francisco. pretty view there. no fog or low clouds currently at 55 degrees. so for the morning we wake up to 40s and 50s. some areas of drizzle possible on the coast. partly

now, rob mayeda joins me now with a closer look at the numbers. and, rob, typically this is when the numbers are usually lower, but we haven't really had any rain to replace those reservoirs. so where are we at right now? yeah, it has been a slow start. you know, other than what we had today, the numbers have really dropped off. and to give you a reference point, the state's largest, the big four reservoirs by the early part of summer when the rain and the snow melted, really completed was at 88% capacity. so as of today, they have dropped quite a bit down to 61% capacity. so as you mentioned, jessica, this really is the seasonal low point where those reservoirs are concerned in terms of capacity. if we compare it to where we should be for this time of year. wow. we still have that built in buffer. that's thanks to the last two years of having average rain and a slightly above average snowpack. so at least despite the dry start to this rain season, you can thank the reservoirs right now, acting as a bit of a buffer. despite this relatively dry star

rob mayeda. joining us now talking about some major changes in the weather. rob. yeah.ome of those changes will be arriving before sunrise tomorrow. you can see here on the radar view, the rain starting to approach the north coast. how much of this will stick around for veterans day it's nice. the one thing i don't see rain. it is pretty dry out there tomorrow morning, but it is on the way. we managed to get through a weekend without any rain. we had the nice weather just for the weekend, but changes just around the corner tomorrow morning. starting in the north bay and then moving through pretty quickly as you look at the hour by hour forecast coming up. right now it's mild out there. we've got increasing moisture, increasing clouds and winds. eventually out of the south. that usually leads to a mild night. we've got precisely that in san jose and walnut creek, both at 58 degrees and upper 50s, close to san francisco. heading towards tomorrow morning, we will begin to see the rain flying. and just to give you an idea, the averages per day are starting to go up a little

let's go and bring in our meteorologist rob mayeda rob, this could be a very sny sunday night football game. yeah, it will be played in what's called a lake effect snow warning, which is active now all the way through monday. and a quick explainer on lake effect snow. lake temperatures this time of year, still in the upper 40s around erie and up west of buffalo. meantime, air temperatures in the 20s. so what happens now is we get that cold air moving over the warmer water. you get clouds to form. and as that moisture rises on the land side of those great lakes, tremendous amounts of snow can fall down in a short period of time. we see that all the time this time of year in places like buffalo. it is a literal snow machine where feet of snow can pile up, and with the winds expected to stay in that general direction throughout the weekend, you can see the snow showers there. a reminder. orchard park, near highmark stadium, just south of downtown buffalo, likely to see several inches of snow at times during the weekend. based on some of these estimates, it's likely they will have to clear

let's bring in our meteorologist, rob mayeda. ow could this impact obviously people in their lives, but also the polling centers tomorrow? yeah, it looks like the peak wind gusts for the most part will hold off until after 8:00 tomorrow night. but you can see the scope of the red flag warnings to our south. socal edison doing the same in terms of power shutoffs across southern california as well. tomorrow. but for the bay area, it's the entire bay area. as of 11 a.m. tomorrow that goes into that red flag warning, even though at least initially, wind speeds should not be all that strong outside of the mountain areas for the morning hours. it's this time tomorrow night, and as we move forward into wednesday morning, we will likely see those peak wind gusts of more than 40 to 50mph, including the interior valleys of the north bay and the east bay. for that reason, we could see wind damage and some downed branches and trees possible in some of those areas. as you head into wednesday morning, with those peak gusts in the mountains over

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. rob, why is new york seeing so much snow right now? yeah, the explanation of what a lake effect snow warning is. those water temperatures in lake erie west of buffalo are still in the upper 40s. air temperatures in the 20s. so as these factors come into play right across the lake, you get clouds forming in that environment. and then as that moisture rises over on the east side of the lake over land, that becomes a perfect snow machine, where you can see these very high rain, high snow rates at times in fact, some of the highways there between buffalo down towards erie, pennsylvania tonight shut down by heavy snowfall. so this is what we're going to be watching a lot of this coming down during the day saturday. so i think if they're going to be clearing out the stadium there, it's going to happen during the day saturday. as snow totals south of buffalo get to 2 to 3ft. now come game time, we should see a little less of that snowfall as temperatures will be in the upper 20s around kickoff, there, we will be looking at a chance of snow fl

rob mayeda.ning us now with the news that will impact everybody in the bay area, because it's november, it's veterans day tomorrow. there's a lot of parades during the morning and midday. and where that's concerned, the timing is not so good. where the rain is going to be coming in. we're going to be watching it closely out of the north bay, even though it moves through quickly on that monday forecast will be high impact for a time as we head through the late morning to midday hours. let's take you into that microclimate forecast heading towards san jose. we're at 56 degrees. partly cloudy skies, more clouds as you move a bit farther north. we're starting to see more of those clouds now into walnut creek. notice the temperatures not going to be as cold tonight as we get more moisture and more cloud cover moving in. and there you see the view around san rafael at 57 degrees. cloudy skies starting to fill on in and into san francisco. more of those low clouds 60 right now in san francisco and will

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda, who's checking out those winds. rob. yeah, and we've had the winds flaring up this weekend. and right now, tonight, those peak wind speeds across the mountains, in the interior valleys. not so much bayside with this first wind event, but then as we move forward towards election evening, election night and into wednesday, that's when we could see those stronger wind speeds, winds outside. right now you can see out towards napa the tri-valley inland east bay, seeing wind speeds of 10 to 20mph. but the forecast moving forward here, hour by hour. the areas in the purple and red elevations above 2000ft. those are the likely spots from now to about mid-morning tomorrow that will see the peak wind speeds not as much across some of the lower elevations. similar trend here to the south santa cruz mountains. the hills east of san jose. looking at those peak wind gusts above 40mph through mid-morning tomorrow. now, these are offshore winds, which means fire danger is going up. notice the trend there monday at 7 a.m. now compare thi

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. rob, why is new york seeing so much snow right now? well, that's a case study in what a lake effect snow warning must look like this time of year when you consider lake erie water temperatures are still in the upper 40s. air temperatures in the 20s. and this sets up nature's snow machine as you get the warm air rising through that cool air environment, clouds form and as that moisture rises on the east side of lake erie over the land, that is where you see those incredible snow rates, which earlier tonight shut down interstate 90 south of buffalo, down towards the new york pennsylvania state line. and that's the type of snowfall we're expecting out there at highmark stadium tomorrow. just south of downtown buffalo, you see the high snow rates for saturday. but look at the change here late sunday, a little change in the wind direction. there may begin to bring those snow rates down right around kickoff time. we're still expecting some snow showers, but the bigger factor could be the wind and those wind chill temperatures kick off temper

meteorologist rob mayeda is joining us now. rob, it is cold outside, though. how about rain?h, clearly cold outside right now. we've got upper 30s and 40s around the bay area. clear skies, san francisco. more clear skies around san jose and the satellite radar. relatively quiet. those clouds which will come in tomorrow. still up on the north coast. these will spill southward tomorrow, which will lead to the change up for the second half of the weekend. you're looking at those rain chances on the increase afternoon to evening. generally low rain totals, though, at least in that sunday forecast, most places getting less than a quarter inch of rain and that coming in towards the evening, though a different setup, though later in the week. atmospheric river that could stall out across portions of oregon and the north coast. now that is the opposite. this is what powers up big rain rates per hour, and you can see the rain totals later this week from wednesday through saturday. inches of rain possible north of mendocino county. and some of this eventually will spill closer to the b

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with what the rest of the weekend is looking like. rob. yeah, and those are decent rain totals. we had them coming down this time last night. enough for about a half inch of rain from napa up to calistoga, mill valley, out towards fairfield, but generally less than a 10th of an inch of rain for areas. san francisco southward. now for the second half of the weekend, the focus now turns to the wind and we'll see the wind advisories up for solano county starting at 7 a.m. tomorrow, taking us into monday morning as the first round of gusty dry offshore wind begins to develop during the day. but it's pretty close to this time tomorrow night, 11:00 to midnight, where the hilltops of the north bay and diablo range could see wind gusts above 45mph, followed up by an even stronger offshore wind event. as we head towards wednesday. so the odds of having some tree damage and maybe some localized power issues could be on the increase. as we approach the middle part of the week, we'll have a closer look at that hour by hour, and when rain chances may r

rob mayeda is here to talk about what's happening going into election day, and also the concerns about possible pg&e shutoffs here tomorrow or the next day. fire danger concerns this time tomorrow night will be ramping up around the bay area and gusty winds. that's one part of the equation. the dry winds, those off shore breezes that will reach its peak intensity. we think this pattern as we head into tomorrow night, just after the time most polls close around the bay area. we'll have a look at that hour by hour coming up. but right now, what offshore winds do when they're not all that strong is give you some warm weather and views like this. no fog, no clouds. looking back to san francisco, we're still at 63 degrees, and other spots around the bay area had highs today in the upper 70s, including walnut creek. we're still at 66 degrees. notice the wind calm. not a lot happening tonight unless you're up closer to the top of mount diablo, where it's still breezy right now, and the offshore wind 68 degrees into san jose. and now moving forward, that red flag warning goes into effect 11:00

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. more on the way. yes. as we recap, these amazing totals brought on from what happens when you have an atmospheric river storm that has been boosted by that. those rain totals, high rain rates at times, and when it stalls out for about a day and a half over the north bay, you can see more than a third of the seasonal rainfall totals come down in just four days. and we saw that around santa rosa and calistoga. more than a foot of rain came down there. santa cruz mountains to ben lomond more than seven inches of rain. a lot less than to san jose and the tri-valley and san francisco picking up more than three inches of rain. all that causing the flash flood warning just yesterday. now storm ranger is getting a bit of a break. there's a view of it. our nbc bay area storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, and a refresher. it normally is parked right here atop san bruno mountain, which gives it that great perspective across the central bay. and tonight it has been picking up a few light showers crossing over the

rob mayeda. here is not talk about our. our our forecast as we enter this week. and this is a big day tomorrow for a lot of people who didn't already vote, who are actually going to go to the polling places. and late tomorrow we could see some weather impacts due to the wind. we've been watching that. the red flag warning underway around the bay area around 11:00 tomorrow morning, but really, it's this time tomorrow evening and tomorrow night when we do expect some of those peak wind gusts to arrive. but before the strong winds arrive offshore winds sometimes can bring you some very nice weather and look at the postcard view right now from emeryville, looking to san francisco, you notice no fog. it's a relatively mild 65 degrees and don't even really need a jacket around the bay area right now. we're still 73 degrees in walnut creek. wind speeds aren't strong right now. tomorrow night that will be a different story as those gusts start to pick up. san jose still sitting at 71 degrees. so around the bay area today, those offshore breezes, it warms up the air kind

all right, let's turn things back to meteorologist rob mayeda, who's here with us. we've been talking about these wind gusts that we're going to see. and you anticipate how long will these last? right now, it looks like the peak of the wind from tomorrow evening into wednesday night. so about 36 hours. it's a pretty long duration event. the peak of it, though a little bit later. now, i think that might be some good news for election day around the bay area. some of the stronger wind gusts holding off until later tomorrow night. the hour by hour timeline on that coming up. but before those strong winds arrive, we had a pretty nice day temperature wise around the bay area. upper 60s earlier in san francisco. no sign of fog. that's one thing that the offshore wind does. just really takes away the marine air and the fog and low clouds around san francisco. sunny skies today. earlier 70s around san rafael, still pretty mild at 67 degrees as we head over to the tri-valley 69. in dublin. humidity 24% again, that's pretty dry, but we still have yet to see the strong winds p

you might have even seen our own rob mayeda got to go and see the launch. when it launched, it was goes you. now it's known as goes 19 as it sits in orbit. and it's the fourth satellite in the geostationary operational environment satellites. that's what it's called to help monitor weather and the environment of earth. now, since its launch, we have started seeing images from some of the several instruments used to detect space weather. and this is the first image from the suv instrument, which stands for solar ultraviolet imager. it helps monitor the sun's electromagnetic spectrum to give us more insight about the sun's flares. having that data allows us to more reliably predict when these large solar storms are going to, or how they propagate towards earth, and whether or not they're going to affect us here on earth in a significant way. and the solar corona is so hot that it is observed with x ray and extreme ultraviolet cameras. now, geomagnetic storms have the potential to disrupt things here on earth, like power utilities and even communication and na

let's check in with our meteorologist, rob mayeda. rob. happy thanksgiving. or should i say frost giving? yeah, exactly. has plenty of it. and across some of those inland valleys, pretty view around san francisco as you see there from the emeryville camera. but it's also already pretty chilly out towards danville and fairfield. look at that. we're already in the upper seconds right now, even though the frost advisory technically goes into effect at the top of the hour, near 40 degree temperatures, there in the north bay. so these chilly nights and early mornings will continue tomorrow morning, likely again, this time tomorrow night on into saturday morning. we're talking about the inner portion of the east bay valleys, including the tri-valley and the valleys of the north bay. now moving forward as we wrap up the holiday weekend, patchy dense fog could cause some issues on the roads, especially in those inland valleys. and we're also tracking an unusually dry start to december, when the next rain chances could be showing up in the 7-day forecast coming up in

we want to get right to meteorologist rob mayeda. tracking an atmospheric river heading our way. . atmospheric river. yeah, and we're going to see that develop as we head towards midweek. what we have right now is light rain around san jose. you can see it on the radar view. these are the clouds that have been going through the day. we've had a few showers in the north bay. now that line is passing through the santa clara valley. and from here. not much left with this particular weather system. you see the rain, mainly light falling off to the south and east of san jose, transitioning to a dry forecast tomorrow and tuesday. but big changes around the corner and atmospheric river pattern, which is essentially going to stall out across northern california. and if you say the words atmospheric river and stalling that could lead to big problems. when it comes to expected rain totals, which could be quite tremendous for the northwestern coast here of california. and some of that will spill into the north bay, especially as we get into wednesday and thursday. so moving forward, chilly n

let's get straight to meteorologist rob mayeda with the updated hour by hour timeline. rob. yeah, we've been watching those showers kind of increase across the north bay this evening, and it's a good spot for our storm ranger mobile doppler radar. right atop san bruno mountain, scanning the skies off to the north across marin county and sonoma county. you can see the showers on the increase, but the more widespread rain, more closely associated with the next atmospheric river boosted storm. it's right there, approaching the central coast. and that is where this particular atmospheric river will set up. as we head through the next couple of days. unlike a week ago that was focused on the north bay, this time around, it's the central coast, and you can see the top rain totals likely to be those areas south of san francisco, especially around the santa cruz mountains. and areas south of san jose. southern sierra now will see the top rain over the next 48 hours. it was that type of rain that we saw parked over the north bay late last week. this time around, looks like the focus

we want to get right to meteorologist rob mayeda. with the updated timeline on this rain, this could be substantial rain. yeah, and we're talking midweek. nothing causing any issues tonight other than the heavy drizzle and some light rain making for some wet roads around san jose. and what's left of that moves out. short term will be tracking some frosty mornings ahead, but the bigger changes around the corner getting started on wednesday. a look at the radar right now shows you the light rain off around the diablo range moving out of san jose, but here is the pattern moving forward into tomorrow morning. we've got the clearing skies so short term patchy frost might be an issue for the next two mornings before big changes arriving midweek. this is a weather pattern that will be boosted by an atmospheric river connection that is showing signs of stalling out across the northern california coast. and when we see these patterns develop, it is possible to get some really tremendous rainfall totals that could extend into parts of the nort
