rob mayeda is here. how's the wind today? because it had been whipping for days and days. well, this is the good news for air crews especially. and crews on the ground. we had these wind speeds when the fire started was about 40, 50, 60mph. but today, mostly wind gusts below 20mph. so they've been able to make up some ground there in terms of getting some back fire set and containment lines, trying to get some containment on the palisades fire. but it is still a very active fire. the satellite detected heat mostly on the north side here. so that's actually better news for places like brentwood and santa monica. have. the more active part of the fire has been in less populated areas. as we take you into the eaton fire as well, here's another location that has benefited from less wind over the last 24 hours. but here's the problem with the eaton fire. more of the activy is down around the altadena area and east of la canada flintridge, so with less wind, fire crews are able to make some ground up. but you saw the view from the mount wilson cam. all the unhealthy air across s

and rob mayeda is here. ow, rob, let's talk about these fires in socal, because i think last week we looked at a drought map and up in northern california, we were doing way better than southern california. yeah, in both areas, seeing offshore wind obviously stronger in southern california, but really a tale of very two different areas when it comes to the rainfall we've seen to start this year, benefiting from the very active november and december in the bay area. look at this map. and it's just two sides of the same coin for zenni. you've got one area well above average. as you go north of san francisco, you've got 100 to 140% of average. but as you move down the central coast into los angeles, almost no rainfall. so the calendar essentially becomes irrelevant. it doesn't matter that it's january. you just haven't had any rain pretty much since october. in fact, for parts of southern california, that goes back to late spring. so the calendar says it's january. but in terms of fire danger for areas south of

let's go to our meteorologist, rob mayeda now. rob, the red flag warning, i think is set to expire there soon, but it could be dicey again this weekend. yeah, the overall offshore wind pattern continues right now. a bit of a lull in the action you saw from gina kim's live shot there. not a lot of wind. and this is the best news we've seen so far this week. those wind speeds have come down quite a bit, especially in the altadena area out to the east near sierra madre, and the most active parts of this fire, the last 24 hours. a lot more of it up in the mountains, a little less of it down towards the more densely populated areas around altadena and north pasadena. similar conditions actually out towards the palisades fire. wind speeds, which were about 40 to 60mph, generally below 20 to 30mph around the mountain areas. most of the activity with this palisades fire has been away from santa monica and brentwood. up in the mountains between topanga beach and woodland hills. this is an area, too that has benefited from less wind, but wat

organizers say they plan on leaving tomorrow and rob mayeda is here now. and rob, i know a lot of people are wondering, well, what's the weather going to be lik the next couple of days for these firefighters and for the folks who live down there? yeah, we had an improvement in conditions today which allowed some progress on those fires. unfortunately, strong, gusty offshore winds are going to be returning there. the time frame to watch will be like right around this time tomorrow night, probably through about wednesday morning. and we have our own dose of offshore winds. we're watching in the bay area tonight across some of the north bay hills. as you're about to see, gusts tonight could be above 50mph. we're seeing that right now close to mount saint helena, 49 degrees in san jose. not much wind. eventually, we'll see lows dropping closer to 40 around san jose. and it's already 40 degrees in dublin. this is one of the locations over the next few nights and mornings, could be waking up to some patchy frost and temperatures in the 30s. 48 degrees in san rafa

meteorologist rob mayeda joins us. rob, sometimes you hate to be right. and you were right yesterday. we stood right here and you told me about those santa ana winds and how dry it's been and the risk for fire danger and the red flag warnings. and we're seeing that play out right now. unfortunately, all the conditions were there. we talked about an area that hasn't really seen any rain since october. then on top of it, one of the strongest santa ana wind patterns in many years. and you get what happens here around the palisades fire. this is around the time the fire started. you see the mountain wave action with the winds moving down towards the ocean. that allows the embers, once they get airborne, to move rather rapidly away from the fire, which leads to a rapid sprd. and when fire crews watch fires like this, the ones where the column plume is right on the ground like that, heading out over the ocean lets you know how strong and gusty those winds are at the same time, look at the chinooks there from cal fire still accessing those water drums at the top
