in 1990, ktvu's rob roth told us about another lake and another town. in that case it was lake bariesa. and the town was called monte cello. here is his report. >> reporter: lake bariesta is shrinking. the water level in this manmade lake is the lowest it has ever been. so low that the water mark from the healthier days here looks like a bathtub ring. so low that this field of clay once sat under 50 feet of water. so low that as the water recedes, remnants of a community are beginning to emerge. today people were fishing off a bridge that has been under water for 34 years. and so had this. it's part of an old swimming pool that once belonged to a farmer in a town once called monte cello. monte cello existed long before there was bariesta. the mackenzie family owned the only store and gas station in town. >> it was the hub of the community really. there were two bars. you have to have a bar in a farming community. and other than that it was just a small country town at the end of the nowhere. >> reporter: bariesa was a very fertile valley and there was a

ktvu's rob roth tells us how her quick thinking may have saved a young girl's life. >> connie wynn miller will tell you she was just doing her job as a school nurse here at conroe elementary. but she may have saved a little girl's life. >> i am so glad she started breathing. i thanked god she started breathing. >> reporter: wynn miller got a report that a girl had layed her head down and became unconscious. >> it was like she was sleeping. i could not rouse her. >> reporter: it appeared the girl was not breathing. >> her breath was more shallow. so i decided to put her right on the ground because that's the best place if you have to give cpr is on the ground. >> reporter: windmiller has gone through cpr training. and started doing cpr while the principal watched. >> i was saying please, please start breathing. >> reporter: the school is thankful to have a windmiller. 57% of all schools in the district don't have a nurse. the school did not say what caused the girl to have her problems but when she does return, nurse windmiller will be here. >> i am looking forward to seeing her. yes. >>>

rob roth will have an update coming up at 5:00. reporting live from redwood city, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. >>> now, let's go to alex savidge who spoke to a man who lived in the apartment complex that caught fire. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good morning. a frightening morning for people living in the apartment complex. 16 people will have to find another place to live because of this massive fire. all of them were living in this apartment building we're showing you that's right next to the business that burned this morning. firefighters say all four of the units were destroyed. people who live in that apartment stood beyond the crime scene tape and watched the fire. jose perez was wearing pajamas and slippers when we saw him. he and his wife and kids raced out of the apartment when he saw the fire. he said the only thing he managed to grab were important legal papers but perez is grateful everyone is okay. >> my family, they. >> are okay. we're sad but we're -- >> my familiar, we're okay. but we're sad. >> reporter: a shelter has been set up at nearby fair oaks elementary

as ktvu's rob roth reports it, took a sharp knife to fight off the dogs. >> reporter: his arm is torn of her neck ripped open. >> almost shell shocked. it happened so fast. >> last thing i expected was to have to, you know, fight for my life. >> reporter: it happened wednesday evening. the four went for their usual walk, when they got here to minto lane a few blocks from home, three pitbulls charged them, going for the dogs. one latched on to the poodle's neck. >> she was squealing a death cry. her face was up at me, so all i could see was terror in her face. >> reporter: charlene wadsworth says she was knocked to the ground, but kept hanging on to her dog. >> her life was in danger. she could have gotten killed. >> reporter: wadsworth says as he tried to help his hound, the pitbull bit him. >> grabbed my hand and started chewing it up. >> reporter: he took out this knife and stabbed the attacking dog once in the ribs. the dog retreated and by then neighbors and the pitbull owners had pulled the dogs away. the owners of the pit bulls would not go on camera. they said the dogs got out
