let's check in with rob schmitt. in corpus christi, texas. i hope you can hear me, rob.ing? >> looking bad, jon. the storm is punishing us. we are getting pummeled. major wind gusts. 100 miles an hour, minimum i would say. we've been feeling it for about the last hour. we confirm that with the weather center. it's gotta be 60-70 miles an hour sustained. we are about 30 miles to the west, maybe southwest to the eye of the storm. producing wind gusts that could be 130-140-miles an hour. you're talking about a major storm. we are on the cleaner side of this thing. i cannot imagine what the other side of the storm is looking like right now. i don't believe there are any reporters too close to the eye on that side besides matt finn, still a little bit north. it's about to get a lot tougher for him as the night goes on. we've got to be experiencing the worst of this storm. it is really coming right now. a lot of rain. this storm surge is one thing. we haven't seen really come up too high as of yet, the 12-foot mark that they were anticipating, i've been keeping an eye on this.

that's where we find our own rob schmitt, he's been there for the last 24 hours scoping out the place and been in that area five hours now, i saw you on "the five" earlier, rob, what can you tell us about the conditions? reporter: what a difference an hour makes. it's dramatically different now. the rain has almost completely stopped. it's very windy, the gusts are down, and now you saw matt finn getting slammed by what was wrecking us a couple hours ago. we were getting hammered 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, 10:00, 11:00 through midnight. we were getting pounded by wind. 100-mile-an-hour wind gusts. maybe 60, 70-mile-an-hour sustained winds. there's a good gust trying to knock me over. it has subsided. we're on the clean side of the storm. the west side of the storm. the dirty side is closer to galveston and houston where i started my day was this morning i was in galveston doing the live shots and decided to try to find the eye of this thing. we were 20 miles, 25 miles from the eye of the storm when it made landfall. you were talking about rockport, took the brunt of this storm. and unconfirmed

. >> let's check in with rob schmitt in corpus christi. how's it looking?ere, john. the winds are still really severe. we're still seeing gusts at 100 miles an hour. i almost got blown over. it's an intense wind storm. the rain isn't as significant or as wet which is a nice break for me. i've been doing this five hours. look at this pam tr-- palm tree wen the gusts hit it wobbles. palm trees are use to wind. we can talk about one other place. we're in corpus christi about 25 miles from the eye of the storm now which has made landfall to our north. in that area where the landfall was made is rockport and what we heard from emergency management officials including the city manager in that area there's been significant damage to buildings in that area. there may be some people in precarious situations but we can't get that confirmed. we're hearing emergency officials and police/fire can't get to people in danger in rockport. what will be the interesting place to watch as the sun comes up and hopefully as the storm moves away a little bit is the rockport area,

our own rob schmitt live in sugarland, texas with the latest. ning, guys, yeah. this is the only one that we found like this. but it certainly is an illustration of the amount of water that's come in here. it's actually incredible to see. they are pumping it out right now. it's going down really fast. this is a very critical intersection on the west side of houston. this is the 90 and 999. if you are from around here you know it's a big intersection. it dips into a bowl and collected all this water. you can see the traffic lights. next to me put up the double screen to show you what it looked like during the daytime and yesterday when we got here before they started pumping it out. you could have swam out and there grabbed that red light pulled yourself on it and sat on top of it if i was a little younger i probably would have done that ♪ the smartest thing to do. one kid did swim out across the intersection. we saw the video there we don't advise anything like that. it was crazy to see this thing basically freeway. as far as rescue effort goes,
