where we weigh in with robert mueller is still to be seen.t i would say, and i understand, i think, where trump's tweet was coming from is the question of what kinds of investigation joe mccarthy preside over versus the type of investigation that robert mueller is. i think we have to be careful here on another historical point to separate out joe mccarthy from mccarthyism. the term has come to refer to as you were saying, to make a wild accusation without evidence. that is a very different thing from what joe mccarthy did in his role as chairman of the permanent subcommittee on investigations, which was the real seat of his investigation into communist conspiracy, to subvert the u.s. government, and the role of communists in a variety of organizations, but particularly, their role with regard to government employees. the robert mueller investigation is much broader. its authority is much less clearly defined. joe mccarthy was in the end, we have to remember, answerable to congress, answerable to the american public, to the voters in wisconsin

what is at stake for robert mueller? >> it is signicant that the case is moving forward, and it is important that they win the case. if they don't, i'm afraid it takes some of the o steam o the investigation and would give trump a chance to talk more about a witch hunt and that this was made up. from bob mueller's side, he is doing the classic federal prosecutor move, doing it in a methodical way. itis is by and large a paper case. an be proven with documents, bank statements and tax forms. he will lay the case out and show in fact that manafort is guilty of these offenses. o on theer hand, manafort's doing the classic defense move, or his lawyers are, blaming the testifying witnesses like gates. it is importt. it is not directly implicating the president, but it is something that will prove the breadth and depth of investigative prowess of bob mueller and his team. jane: but it has nothing to do with russia interference. doesn't this lend weight when president trump does call it a witch hunt? michael: i've talked for a

he's essentially putting pressure on robert mueller to wrap this up. this is something that you and i have reported on extensively. he's trying to essentially move this process along. rudy giuliani again this morning saying, look, we haven't heard from robert mueller in two weeks. we haven't gotten a response to the counter-proposal that the president's legal team submitted. remember, we talked about that several days ago, when they wanted to essentially limit the scope significantly of what types of questions could be asked and what types of follow-up questions could be on the table. giuliani saying this terms of an interview, it does not look good, but it is not finally decided. he also adds, it is time to put up, and they have nothing except a bunch of irrelevant charges. he says the charges have absolutely nothing to do with president trump. that's the new talking point today, as president trump, as you indicated, hallie, in the new interview overnight, saying that he could take charge of the russia investigation. i tried to press giuliani on what
