the governor of alabama robert bentley is with us. he's in rainsville alabama this morning. governor, what is the latest down there? >> well, bob, we're visiting the state. we've had a tragic event here in alabama. we've had numerous long track tornados that have crossed the state. we now have 250 people dead, confirmed dead in alabama. we have about 1700 people who are injured. and we have a number that are missing. that number is inexact. but certainly the confirmed dead is 250. >> schieffer: what do you need, governor? >> well, let me tell you. we've had great response first from our first responders. i would like to say this on air that we have had some of the greatest first responders anyone could have. those are the people that get to the ground first after something like this happens. our first responders have done well. we declared a state of emergency before the first tornado even hit. we called out the national guard that afternoon. we have spoken with the president, met with the president. they have now declared this certainly a fema disaster area. and the entire

governor robert bentley, about the impact of the storm. the u.s.evee there. floods just about 200 square miles of rich farmland in missouri. why did they do this? to save a small illinois town of cairo from flooding. so there is good and bad here. the good news, water levels have dropped more than a foot and a half. the bad news? parts of mississippi county, missouri, are now flooded but that was the plan. rob marciano is there in missouri. where you are standing right now was not flooded. look at the water behind you. it was not flooded 24 hours ago. >> reporter: that's right. as a matter of fact, what i'm standing on may look to you like a boat ramp, doesn't it? a ramp that goes out into a nice lake. but in reality this is a road that on the very end of this newly made lake is another what seems to be a boat ramp. this is a road. last night at this time it was pretty much dry. there was water in here but beyond those trees about a mile and a half is where it blew open, almost a two-mile span of this levee that has flooded this farmland here. they

and their work with governor robert bentley, and alabama emergency director, has provided vital assistance during these difficult times. this continued level of federal coordination is critical to ensuring that alabama gets back on its feet as quickly as possible. madam president, i have never in my life seen such devastation to the extent that i saw during my visit to my home state of alabama recently. giant oaks lie flattened and splintered. homes throughout state were demolished leaving thousands homeless and relying on the red cross, the salvation army, and others for shelter. at one point last week over one million alabama res residents we without power. almost a quarter of the state's population. it was gut wrenching to walk through scattered rubble and realize it was once the site of someone's home or someone's business. madam president, the scale and the magnitude of destruction can only be described as hell on earth. and in our state while larger cities like birmingham and tuscaloosa suffered damage, so did rural areas like pleasant grove, con card, rainsville, comb, and many othe
