club and we organized a field trip to byu law school when i was in high school to go hear judge robert borkpeak. it was fantastic. activities like that were a good way to make girls like you in high school. [applause] fortunately, i found one in high school. she is here with me. wave to everybody, sharon. [applause] our former president loves, loves sharon. he thinks she is great. i was with him at the white house and he asked a question. i won't bore you with the details, it would take too long and deviate from my speech, but it was a complicated question about the intricate interaction between the constitution and senate rules. it was a strategic question. he wanted to know how he could engage in a particular maneuver and i said, that is fascinating and coincidental. i was talking to one of my staff members about this. to answer your question, i would need a few hours and would need to consult with experts on the senate rules, and i would need a couple of lawyers. and he said, that is fine, you can do that. go talk to johnny. and i realized that is what i was doing the rest of the day. i

among the speakers were robert bork, antonin scalia and ted olson. president reagan appointed bork and scalia to serve as judges on the united states court of appeals for the district of columbia that here. ted olson already served in the office of legal counsel and the department of justice. about 200 people attended the symposium. and so began the federalist society for law and public policy studies. what started as an organization for law students grew quickly. for my part, i arrived as a first-year student at tulane law school in the fall of 1984. two years after the society's first symposium. as a orientation for first-year students, representatives spoke and encouraged us to become involved in extracurricular activities. most of the student groups like the log review or the student bar association had no overt ideological agenda. one student group clearly did. the president of the new chapter of the national lawyers guild explained its history as a liberal counterweight to what he called the conservative american bar association.
