( laughter ) and then start it again. and i mean that somewhat sincerely, because what really is upsetting about this is not even so much what you're reporting in here. because having read "fear" and "rage," nothing in here is surprising. while shocking and upsetting, the path was laid for the behavior that is in this book. but it is-- it is-- it is upsetting to read. and i was wondering, was it upsetting to write? >> yes. we were-- look, the theme here-- and it was a discovery for us, that this was a national security crisis. we've kind of thought all of trump was a domestic problem politically. but in china, russia, and iran, they said, "my god, what's happening here?" so they went on military alert.

robert costa, what happens next? >> the anna say that congressman brian fitzpatrick of pennsylvania was one of the republicans? >> anna? >> yes, i believe so. yes. >> that's really interesting, nicole, because brian fitzpatrick is from thewell weather district, the first congressional district in pennsylvania. the scene is always a battleground. he's a moderate republican. one of the few moderate republicans in the house. he is someone who is always seen as a reporter as someone you track f. fitzpatrick is going in a different direction people in tough districts on the gone side always watch his vote. maybe someone like fitzpatrick ahead of 2022 is calculating in my suburban vote-rich middle class, upper middle class philadelphia area district, that he can't be going pro-bannon at this point. and that's something to watch, beyond the kinzinger and cheney crowd, who have been very adamantly pro -- anti-trump during this process. >> robert costa, that's a great point. s that vote today about steve bannon. s that not ev

it is that simple. >> robert costa, i watched that a few times. i have two new questions after watching it again today. sidney powell and others are being sued for the lie that eastman tells there, this part of it, how the machines contributed to that fraud, the voting machine companies smartmatic and dominion are suing sidney powell and many others for billions of dollars i believe at this point. does eastman face any legal exposure for that lie? >> he may face a subpoena based on the "washington post's" latest reporting to testify before the congressional committee investigating the insurrection. to be determined on whether the department of justice will investigate eastman. merrick garland, the a.g., was asked about this today in a round-about way by senator white house who asked if he and the aj would look into the violence. the amount of g. was vague but didn't rule it out. i think what is important is your point about fraud. when you step back and read what we have in the book and talk to key players, this effort, whether it was sidney powel

recent reporting by bob wood ward and robert costa says mike pence wanted to reverse the outcome of the a legal way to do it. and unlike the criminals that attacked the capitol, mike pence was not willing to break the law that day but has firsthand information and testimony to offer about donald trump and others who were trying to break the law that day. the house select committee investigating the january 6th attack on the capitol might be adding mike pence to the list of subpoenaed witnesses at some point. the first round of subpoenas that from four high level trump officials ripen this week on thursday the committee has subpoenaed documents from steve bannon, mark meadows, dan and cash patel and they must delivered by thursday so we will have the first sign of coal ply -- compliance or defiance this week. last week, the committee's chairman benny tompson said said this. >> we started questioning something of the voluntary witnesses today and we'll continue that process. we'll have other subpoenas that scheduled to come out to those who don't agree to come in voluntarily, we'll do cri
