robert draper's fascinating story appropriately titled "mr.wild ride" down the stretch with the nominee. it's been a long time. i feel like we saw you in iowa. how much time and what kind of access did you get with trump? >> it was over a period of five weeks. i flown on his plane four times and spent a day and an evening in mar-a-lago with him and spent an awful lot of time with his campaign team. so i hesitate to say fly on the wall but close as one can come to it, i guess. >> it seemed from reading your piece, it seemed that you had a similar experience with donald trump than we've heard others who were getting to know donald trump. he's someone in private and seems someone different in public. >> sure, yeah. you see him in campaign rallies, kate, and he's very boisterous. he says incendiary things. he still says some maybe ill advised things one to one but in a much more subdued manner. he's dealt with the media for over 30 years. i mean, everyone now acknowledges him as a master of the media but doesn't mean just saying outrageous things.

first we go to robert draper, writer for the new york times magazine. >> for those who haven't read its the headline? what's your takeaway? >> donald trump is the manager of his own campaign. he's the communications director for his own campaign. these notions of trying to curb mr. trump, trying to make him more presidential. haven't worked, and not because of the incompetence of members of his campaign, but that's because that's the way trump wants it much. >> there was a moment where they brought in paul maniford to manage the conventions. you talk about a moment where trump put him in his place when it comes to managing the media. >> there was a press release that trump wanted to put out relating to a woman the trump campaign had briefly considered hiring. he had written a few untoward tweet tweets. trunlp wanted to counter punch as he tends to do. paul maniford called in pleading with trump not to put it out there. trump said, don't tell me how to do pr and the statement he did go out. >> what is the biggest revelation in the piece? >> i think there are a few things that -- again,

. >> robert draper is with us now. met donald trump, donald trump said -- >> whether or not a hand some guy. i didn't expect it. >> thanks for passing that onto the general public, guys, i'll tell you more secrets later. >> you are hand some. >> what was your takeaway after meeting donald trump. >> he certainly can put on the charm. more than that i found surprising, he's actually fairly subdued. you see him on the stump and you imagine this guy is a fountain of outrageousness. in fact, he's a 69-year-old manna grandfathered. he's a great deal more measured, i don't mean to say fully self-centered but he does consider, at least momentarily, the worth of what rolls off his tongue will overall i found him to be a fairly pleasant person. >> what's so interesting about it, he does just the opposite in person. on the stump it's me, me, me, me. in person he always goes to other people. instead of saying my book is the greatest book ever. willie geist book party, you know why? it's the greatest book i've ever read in my life.
