robert gibbs, what do you anticipate we are going to hear today from the president?er and other places from the white house on the number of evacuees that have left afghanistan. i think, you know, credit where credit is due. i think they've taken a lot of criticism on the last two weeks, or week and a half of this withdrawal, but what you have seen really in the last week and a half is a significant number of people that have left. i think you will also begin to talk through this august 31st deadline, and i think messaging with the american people what this means. i hope that the white house understands they will be judged in the medium and long term not on whether we get out august 31st or september 3rd, but how these next two -- sorry, how the next week goes as relates to the safety of americans and getting as many afghans as we can out. >> jonathan lemire, do you get the sense that's how the white house is thinking about it? >> yes, we do. i mean they -- they have -- there was a message today. they are going to say they're still confident of getting americans out

joining me now the robert gibbs, political analyst and former white house press secretary. is kind of polling data, so i need you to help shed some context here. would these numbers concern you if this was your boss? >> well, i think what is concerning, likely is concerning to the white house, if you look at those earlier numbers, the foundation of that was almost certainly the covid response and recovery efforts. so with the increase in cases we're seeing and the increase in the delta variant and the uncertainty that that brings, it's not surprising that those numbers have gone down. i would say, too, at the beginning of the week we saw the beginning of pessimism around the economy. that may have been buoyed a bit by the jobs report, but the combination of covid and the economy are the foundation of this president's job approval rating. so there is going to be concern about whether the variant becomes more out of control and whether that impacts the economy as well. so it's something that's going to be watched extraordinarily closely within the white house. >> administratio

also robert gibbs, former white house press secretary for president obama and jonathan lamir is here. all three msnbc contributors. jonathan, i was told this would be solemn. this president has avoided most of the politics, other than being at the front of describing it as an insurrection. he stayed out of a lot of the fray around the second impeachment of the ex president and around the formation of the select committee. what do you understand about the importance of today's event to him? >> it's extraordinarily important, nicolle. you're right, he was on that day, january 6th, delivered powerful remarks declaring it an insurrection and condemning the role that then president trump played in inciting it. he stayed out of the impeachment. he expressed his dismay that the bipartisan january 6th commission modelled after the september 11th commission fell apart. he and his team have been clear eyed about how significant january 6th was and how damaging it was to the soul of this nation. he's described conversations he had with foreign leaders who wondered how that could happen there and

job, we have one among us who do is a star, kayleigh mcenany, and others who have interviewed robert gibbsso many others, this is a job for a president now. the united states of america needs to hear from its commander in chief. >> kash: yes, and you are absolutely right, harris, and i am extremely biased for kayleigh who did a wonderful job as did so many others, but this is a job for the president of the united states of america, the commander in chief of our armed forces. unfortunately this situation reminds me of an lbj moment during vietnam when he micromanaged award of failure, apparently we are seeing some parallels here with the biden administration, president biden micromanaging us to failure in afghanistan because of his lack of leadership, his refusal to take question and his refusal more improperly than that to implement a plan in afghanistan as our commander in chief to effectively evacuate our citizens safely and help our afghan allies and partners and secure a piece in afghanistan. that was the whole point of putting 20 years and 2 trillion into the war and not to mention 5,
